Newborn is found dead wrapped in pantyhose in dumpster... and cops finally arrest suspect

Daily Mail10 hours ago
Bay Area police have charged a woman with murder, marking a major breakthrough in a cold case after a newborn baby was found dead in a dumpster 16 years ago.
Angela Onduto, 46, of Denver, Colorado, was arrested in May this year and charges were filed against her on July 2, according to the Union City Police Department.
She is accused of killing a baby girl whose body was found in a dumpster close to Parkside Apartments in the California city on May 18, 2009.
The baby still had her umbilical cord attached and she was wrapped inside a bloodied pantyhose when a horrified resident stumbled across her remains, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
It's unclear how detectives believe Onduto killed the infant. The Daily Mail has contacted Union City Police for more information.
The department said in a statement: 'The newborn was lovingly named Matea Esperanza by UCPD officers - a name meaning 'Gift from God' in Hebrew and 'Hope' in Spanish.
'Matea was discovered by a man searching for recyclables. The discovery led to an extensive and challenging investigation that remained open and active for more than a decade.'
Union City Police shared a mugshot of Onduto looking startled, with one eyebrow raised as she looked wide-eyed at the camera.
She is also pictured on her LinkedIn profile wearing blue eyeshadow with short cropped hair. The page says she works in 'Human Services' and is looking for a job.
Union City Police said detectives identified Onduto as a suspect back in 2009, but they did not have enough evidence to charge her.
Modern DNA technologies led to a breakthrough this year, allowing investigators to arrest Onduto on what would have been the child's 16th birthday.
'In May 2025, UCPD detectives traveled to Denver to coordinate with local law enforcement,' Union City Police said.
'Onduto was arrested at that time; however, charges were initially withheld pending further forensic analysis and a detailed review of the medical examiner's findings.'
On July 2, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office filed a murder charge against Onduto and she was detained in Denver.
Onduto allegedly confessed to killing the baby shortly after she was born, according to a shocking probable cause statement obtained by the Local Bay Area News Group.

Union City Cold Case Detective Dominic Ayala reportedly wrote in the statement: 'Angela detailed how she intentionally murdered [Matea] after giving birth at home in 2009.
'Angela expressed no remorse, and said she knew while pregnant she had no intention of keeping the baby.
'She admitted to discarding Baby Jane Doe in the dumpster. She denied diagnosis with any psychiatric conditions and/or drug use at the time of the incident.'
Union City detectives are now working to extradite Onduto to Alameda County, where she will face court proceedings.
'The UCPD expresses deep gratitude that justice is progressing in Matea's case after 16 years, reaffirming the department's commitment to solving cold cases and bringing closure to the community,' the department said.
'Matea's memory continues to resonate within Union City.
'In 2017, the Union City Police Officers Association purchased a permanent grave marker in her honor, and a memorial service is held annually by members of the department.'
The investigation is ongoing, and detectives have urged anyone with additional information to contact detectives via (510) 675-5259 or use the anonymous tip line at (510) 675-5207.

Sweet little girl, 5, left seriously injured after two pit bulls attack her in friend's backyard

A five-year-old girl from Indiana is recovering from devastating injuries after two pit bulls mauled her in a friend's backyard. The attack in South Bend left her bloodied and permanently scarred in the brutal attack the occurred last month. Little Nylah Jones had only just stepped into her friend's backyard on S. Albert Avenue with her six-year-old brother when the two dogs lunged at her without warning sinking their teeth into her face and dragging her down as she cried for help. 'I just heard my son yelling "Mom! Mom!" said Jillquisha Jones, Nylah's mother to WNDU. 'I was like, "What's going on?" and he said, "The dog is on Nylah!"' The horrifying incident unfolded at around 7pm as neighbors ran outside to the sound of the youngster screaming. One neighbor, Angela, saw the child being carried in blood-soaked arms toward the street and said the scene was nothing short of horrific. 'She was bloody. She was carrying her,' Angela recalled. 'She met her mom and was like, "We've got to go to the hospital." It was just a really crazy scene.' Nylah's injuries were severe. She was rushed to the emergency room and is now left with dozens of deep cuts across her face - injuries that doctors say could leave her permanently disfigured. 'She has scars all over her face,' her mother said. 'They told me some of them might never go away.' The attack has left a lasting emotional imprint on Nylah's brother, who witnessed everything and now struggles to speak about it. 'Every time I look at her face, it just makes me really sad and cry,' he said told 21Alive. Nylah's family says the little girl is now afraid of going outside. 'My daughter almost died,' Jillquisha said. 'We could've lost her.' Her mother says she has since been stonewalled by local authorities and animal control, despite repeated attempts to get answers or action. 'At first, I just felt like they didn't care,' Jillquisha said. 'I'm calling them, I'm reaching out to animal control. Everybody from my friend's list on my social media tried to reach out, and they're not talking to me. They didn't say nothing. 'I don't care what kind of dog it is,' Jillquisha added. 'If it can do that to a child, something has to be done. 'There has to be more urgency. It shouldn't take a little girl being torn up for someone to care.' The two pit bulls were later voluntarily surrendered by their owners to the South Bend Animal Resource Center (SBARC), but no charges have been filed, and the city has yet to confirm what consequences the owners will face or whether the dogs will be euthanized. The City of South Bend said in a statement that all bite reports are reviewed 'on a case-by-case basis,' taking into account the source of the report, the severity of the bite, and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials from SBARC have confirmed they are aware of the incident but declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. This attack has reignited longstanding fears about safety around pit bulls, particularly when it comes to children. Animal rights groups and breed-specific advocates have long debated the temperament and risk posed by the breed, with critics pointing to fatal maulings and defenders blaming poor training or negligent owners.

A Mexican court sentences 10 men to 141 years each in a cartel-run recruitment ranch

A Mexican court on Tuesday sentenced 10 men to 141-year prison terms each for their involvement in a ranch in the western Mexican state of Jalisco that was used by a feared cartel to recruit members, kill and disappear victims. The discovery earlier this year of the Izaguirre ranch, used by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel for recruitment and training since 2021, had sparked alarm and fear across the region. The 10 men were arrested in September 2024 during an initial raid on the property. They were convicted on Monday in the disappearance and murder of three victims. On Tuesday, each was sentenced to 141 years and three months in prison, and ordered to pay 1.3 million pesos (about $65,000) in restitution to the victims' families, the local prosecutor's office said. Five other suspects detained in the case are still awaiting trial, including three municipal police officers, a CJNG operative who allegedly recruited new members, and José Murguía Santiago, the mayor of Teuchitlan, the municipality where the ranch is located. Murguía Santiago was arrested just days after Mexico's Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero revealed that since 2021, the Jalisco state Human Rights Commission had alerted Teuchitlan authorities about the ranch being operated by CJNG, but the warning was ignored for years. The case had sparked a major controversy after Guerrero Buscadores de Jalisco — a group that searches for missing persons — reported in March 5 the discovery of numerous charred human bones and hundreds of clothing items and shoes at the site. The shock brought back into the spotlight stark violence and rampant impunity in cartel-plagued parts of the Latin American nation and the tragedy of the investigations into Mexico's 130,000 missing people. Following that report, it emerged that Jalisco's state prosecutors had not moved forward with the investigation for several months after the initial raid on the ranch, when the National Guard intervened and arrested the 10 men. During that operation, one body and two of the men later detained were found on the ranch. Due to missteps and omissions by state authorities, the federal Attorney General's Office took over the case — but criticism persisted. At the end of April, Gertz Manero dismissed claims that cremation sites existed at 'Rancho Izaguirre,' fueling backlash from activists. The group Guerreros Buscadores de Jalisco responded, saying it had recovered '17 sets of charred human bone remains' from the site, which are now in the custody of forensics teams. ____

Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok is posting antisemitic tropes on X

Elon Musk 's Grok chatbot, embedded in X, began making antisemitic statements on Tuesday following a significant update over the weekend. Grok echoed antisemitic tropes, claiming individuals with Jewish-sounding names are disproportionately linked to hate and deceitfulness, and was prompted by users to utter Nazi slogans. The Anti-Defamation League condemned Grok's responses as 'irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic,' warning that such rhetoric would amplify extremism on X. The chatbot indicated its July 5 update, which included directives not to shy away from 'politically incorrect' claims, enabled its new behavior.
