NIT Rourkela develops eco-friendly biofilm to mitigate impact of industrial oil spills, chemical waste

New Delhi: Researchers at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela have developed a novel bacterial biofilm technology that can degrade phenanthrene -- a toxic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) commonly found in industrial chemical waste -- and help mitigate industrial oil spills.
PAHs are hazardous organic compounds capable of contaminating soil and water through fossil fuel combustion, industrial discharge, and oil spills.
Traditionally, these are managed by chemical oxidation or soil excavation, which are expensive and often generate secondary pollution.
However, the patented new biofilm, comprising cells attached to the substratum within an extracellular polymeric matrix, enabled 95 per cent degradation of phenanthrene in just five days.
It provides an environmentally friendly, effective, and cost-efficient solution for wastewater treatment.
'The technology can help in mitigating the impact of industrial oil spills, where phenanthrene and other PAHs pose a serious threat to marine ecosystems. It will also be highly beneficial for regions with high industrial activity and inadequate pollution control infrastructure,' said Dr. Kumari Uma Mahto, Research Graduate, NIT Rourkela.
The biofilm was developed using Luria Bertani broth -- a nutrient-rich medium.
It has also demonstrated rapid PAH degradation attributed to enhanced metabolic capacity and structural stability of the biofilm matrix, which supports increased microbial cell density, prolonged viability, and effective substrate utilisation.
'The new biofilm is well-compatible for integration in existing biofilm reactors used at municipal and industrial wastewater treatment facilities, especially those dealing with hydrocarbon-based pollutants,' said Prof. Surajit Das, Department of Life Science, NIT Rourkela.
"Our patented technology also opens opportunities for potential collaboration with the petrochemical industry to promote more sustainable pollution control practices," Das added.
In addition, the biofilm contains a protective layer of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) that helps in dissolving and absorbing the harmful molecules while protecting the microbes from toxic effects.
The findings also highlight the potential of biofilm-based systems for enhanced biodegradation of persistent organic pollutants in wastewater treatment systems and contaminated aquatic environments, the team said.

Trichy: Indian intervention led to the postponement of the Axiom Mission 4 launch originally scheduled for July 11, ensuring the safety of astronaut Shubanshu Shukla and three others, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation ( Isro ) and secretary of the department of space, V Narayanan, has said. Speaking at the 21st convocation of the National Institute of Technology, Trichy (NIT-T) here on Saturday, Narayanan recalled the original launch of Axiom Mission 4 was scheduled for June 11, but on the morning of June 10, a liquid oxygen leak in the booster engine of the rocket was detected. "The rocket, which was supposed to take into space along with Shubanshu Shukhla and three other astronauts from different countries, had developed a problem. It was the Indian team that raised concerns and ensured the launch was called off on the evening of June 10 at 5.15pm, as the rocket was deemed unsafe to fly. The cracks were later fixed, and the rocket successfully lifted off on June 25, placing all the astronauts safely in orbit," he said. "Every Indian must be proud that, through our education system, knowledge, and the support of Isro, we were able to call off a mission in time to ensure the safety of the astronauts. Today, it is part of history that they were launched and brought back safely," he added. The Isro chairman also presented a model of the GSLV Mk-3 rocket to the institution. Praising India's space efforts, he said, "We have so far launched six rockets, with the heaviest being the GSLV Mark-3 vehicle, through which we placed Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3 in orbit, completed commercial missions, and launched 72 foreign satellites. The same rocket is now set to lift a 6,500kg communication satellite of the USA into orbit. It will also carry Indian crew members to space in 2027." NIT-T director G Aghila presented a report about the academic, research accomplishments and reiterated its 9th ranking in NIRF and 31st among all higher education institutions. A total of 2,045 degrees were awarded which includes 175 Phd, 5 MS, 483 MTech, 18 M Arch, 95 MBA, 109 MCA, 90 17 M A, 995 B tech and 58 B Arch. Earlier, speaking to reporters at Trichy airport, Narayanan said, "On July 30, the NASA-Isro synthetic aperture radar satellite will be launched using GSLV mark 2 vehicle. The satellite is jointly realised by India, Isro and JPL (USA). This satellite is going to be useful for the global community in earth observation and disaster mitigation areas. It is an important satellite, and it will be the 102nd launch from Indian soil. "

Contrary to the conventional methods for wastewater treatment, this technology offers environment friendly, effective and cost-efficient solution. Informing about the grant of patent on Thursday, the NIT-R said PAHs are hazardous organic compounds capable of contaminating soil and water through fossil fuel combustion, industrial discharge and oil spills. The traditional methods used to address this challenge with chemical oxidation or soil excavation are expensive and often generate secondary pollution. But the new technology provides a cheaper alternate to the global challenge of wastewater treatment. The developed biofilm comprises cells attached to the substratum within an extracellular polymeric matrix. The research team grew the biofilm using Luria Bertani broth, a nutrient-rich medium. ISRO chairman to attend NIT-T convocation on July 26

Trichy: ISRO chairman Dr V Narayanan will be the chief guest at the 21st convocation of the NIT-T on July 26, director Dr G Aghila announced on Thursday. A total of 2,044 students will receive their degrees, including 994 BTech, 58 BArch, 483 MTech, 90 MSc, 109 MCA, 95 MBA, 18 MArch, 17 MA, five MS (by research), and 175 PhD graduates. Jayashree M of BTech (Electronics and Communication Engineering) will be awarded the President's Medal for securing the highest overall CGPA. Institute medals will be presented to top-performing students across various programmes, including nine from BTech, one from BArch, 23 from MTech, and others from MSc, MArch, MCA, MBA, and MA streams. Highlighting recent academic developments, Dr Aghila said the institute launched the Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) this year. Approved by the National Council for Teacher Education, the BSc BEd programme has admitted its first batch of 50 students in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. She also noted the institute's growing social outreach, citing the development of Bully Ind, an educational gaming app aimed at tackling cyberbullying among school students. The DST-ANRF Start-up Research Grant supports the project.
