Delhi HC seeks Centre's reply on AAP's plea over rent demand for party office
Delhi High Court
on Monday sought the Centre's response on a plea filed by
AAP
against the rent demand for its party office in
Vithalbhai Patel House
in the capital.
Justice Sachin Datta issued notice to the Centre on AAP's plea filed in a case in which the party challenges the cancellation of the allotment of the suite for its office.
The high court asked the authorities to file its reply within two weeks and posted the matter on July 22.

The Centre's counsel said there was no urgency in the matter as it was only a notice and they would be proceeding in line with the Public Premises (

Its counsel argued the Directorate of Estates allegedly cancelled the allotment of a double suite in Vithalbhai Patel House with effect from September 14, 2024, without any information and belatedly conveyed the same to the petitioner for the first time in a letter dated January 17.
The petitioner handed over the possession of the premises on April 30, the counsel added.
In a fresh plea, AAP said the Directorate of Estates on June 20 re-issued the bills in the form of a reminder through which the authorities have re-affirmed the arbitrary eviction of the petitioner from its state party office via the ex-parte cancellation order of September 14, 2024.
AAP said in letters issued on March 6 and May 13, the authority demanded rent of over Rs 8 lakh for occupying the premises from the time period beginning the date of alleged cancellation.
It, therefore, urged the court to stay the communication.
"Directorate of Estates passed an ex parte order cancelling the allotment of the subject accommodation, that is, Double Suite at 514, VP House, New Delhi, to the petitioner, with an ultimatum of handing over its physical possession within a period of thirty days. This ex parte order has not been conveyed to the petitioner to date," AAP's plea said.

'Fragile, Rare, Priceless': Modi Govt To Digitise India's Manuscript Heritage
In the next three years, the Narendra Modi-led government will digitise thousands of ancient Indian manuscripts. According to a government tender from National Archives of India (NAI), many of the manuscripts are 'fragile, rare, deteriorating, brittle and to be handled with great care". For the digitisation project, a sum of Rs 50 crore has already been approved. These priceless records – some written on palm leaf, birch bark, parchment, cloth, or handmade paper – span a vast linguistic spectrum, including Sanskrit, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Arabic, and Persian, as per the document accessed by News 18. Hailed as India's most ambitious civilisational archiving mission to date, the groundwork for this digital effort was laid much earlier. The culture ministry initiated the process with at least three other websites – Indian Cultures, Abhilekh Patal, and the Indian Mission for Manuscripts. For years, various government and affiliated institutions quietly collected and preserved neglected manuscripts from temple libraries, scholar households, and oral traditions. In Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kashi, teams collaborated with traditional scholars and researchers to digitise and catalogue regional scriptural records long before it became a priority. Now, the Centre is formalising this mission. According to the official document, the digitisation project will involve several procedures including unbinding, flattening, cleaning, scanning, quality control, metadata creation, optical character recognition (OCR) for applicable languages, and long-term digital storage. Once fully digitised, the content will be integrated into existing national knowledge systems through platforms such as the National Manuscripts Repository (NAMAMI), the National Virtual Library of India (NVLI), the Digital Library of India, the Bharatavani multilingual platform, and the government's flagship portal. These platforms will allow the general public to access and read the documents. This project is aimed at digitally preserving India's ancient manuscripts and important documents. The tender also mentions that several manuscripts are in 'an extremely fragile condition, susceptible to damage due to age and lack of proper storage", and stressed on the need for non-invasive digitisation using high-resolution scanners that do not expose records to heat or harsh lighting. Experts involved in the project told News18 that this effort is more than just preservation; it is a cultural reclamation.

CM Stalin inaugurates 729 houses for Sri Lankan Tamils in five districts
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Monday inaugurated 729 houses built at a cost of Rs 38.76 crore for Sri Lankan Tamils living in Sri Lankan rehabilitation camps in Keezhputhupattu (Villupuram district); Thirumurthi Nagar (Tiruppur district); Thammampatti (Salem district); Nagavathi dam and Kesaikuli dam (Dharmapuri district); and Kandiyapuram (Virudhunagar district). A release said the CM had announced that 7,469 new houses will be built instead of old houses for Lankan Tamils in 26 districts. In the first phase, orders were issued for building 3,510 houses in 35 camps located in 19 districts. Already, 2,781 houses have been handed over to the Tamils in 32 camps in 18 districts. Stalin also inaugurated additional buildings for the Dharmapuri collectorate and office buildings for taluk offices in various districts, built at a total cost of Rs 54.80 crore, through video conference. Members of the State Minorities Commission called on Stalin on Monday and thanked him for granting financial assistance to the members of the Buddhist, Jain and Sikh communities to undertake pilgrimage to their holy places.
