ED files chargesheet against ex UCO Bank CMD Subodh Kumar Goel; attaches Rs 106-crore assets
Movable and immovable assets of Goel worth Rs 106.36 crore were attached as part of a provisional order issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) on July 9, the agency said in a statement. It added that a fresh chargesheet was also filed before a special PMLA court in Kolkata on July 11, and Goel, his family members, close aides and related companies have been named as accused.
The former UCO Bank boss was arrested for playing a "substantial" role in sanctioning loans of more than Rs 1,460 crore to CSPL, which later on turned into an NPA (non-performing asset)."In lieu of sanctioning loans to CSPL, Goel received substantial illegal gratifications in the form of cash, immovable properties, luxury goods and services routed through a web of shell companies," the ED said.Evidence, it alleged, also shows the use of accommodation entries (hawala transactions) and structured layering through front companies for systematic settlement of kickbacks, it said.A Chartered Accountant (CA) named Anant Kumar Agarwal, an alleged close associate of Goel, was also arrested by the agency in June for "facilitating accommodation entries, managing shell entities, and routing illegally acquired cash." Agarwal, too, is lodged in jail at present.
With the latest attachment, the total freezing of assets in the case stands at Rs 612.71 crore, according to the ED.

They caused a fire in an areas where Iranian-built Shahed drones -- relied on by Russia to attack Ukraine -- were stored, the SBU said. It said the strikes also hit a company, Elektropribor, in Russia's southern Penza region, which it said "works for the Russian military-industrial complex", making military digital networks, aviation devices, armoured vehicles and ships. The governor for the Penza region, Oleg Melnichenko, said on Telegram that one woman had been killed and two other people were wounded in that attack. Russia's defence ministry said its air-defence systems had destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory -- 34 over the Rostov region -- in a nearly nine-hour period, from Friday night to Saturday morning. An elderly man was killed inside a house that caught fire due to falling drone debris in the Samara region, governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev posted on Telegram. In the Rostov region, a guard at an industrial facility was killed after a drone attack and a fire in one of the site's buildings, acting Rostov governor Yuri Sliusar said. Heavy use of drones Ukraine has regularly used drones to hit targets inside Russia as it fights back against Moscow's full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022. Russia, too, has increasingly deployed the unmanned aerial devices as part of its offensive. An AFP analysis published on Friday showed that Russia's forces in July launched an unprecedented number of drones, 6,297 of them. The figure included decoy drones sent into Ukraine's skies in efforts to saturate the country's air-defence systems. In Ukraine's central-eastern Dnipropetrovsk region, Russian drone attacks Friday night wounded three people, governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram. Several buildings, homes and cars were damaged, he said. Russian forces have claimed advances in Dnipropetrovsk, recently announcing the capture of two villages there, part of Moscow's accelerated capture of territory in July, according to AFP's analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW). Kyiv denies any Russian presence in the Dnipropetrovsk area. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has consistently rejected calls for a ceasefire in the more than three-year conflict, said Friday that he wanted peace but that his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive were "unchanged". Those demands include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said only Putin could end the war and renewed his call for a meeting between the two leaders. "The United States has proposed this. Ukraine has supported it. What is needed is Russia's readiness," he wrote on X.

Tomatoes get expensive as rains hit supply, quality
Pune/Nashik: Tomato prices in the city soared to Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg in retail markets and hit Rs 90 to Rs 100 a kg on quick commerce platforms. Rainfall and supply disruptions have led to limited supply in the market, pushing up prices. A Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) official said, "Owing to the rainfall, the supply of tomatoes has reduced in the market. The quality is also compromised usually in the monsoon. Wholesale rates are trending at around Rs 40 per kg," said Sharad Gongade, secretary of the Narayangaon market, a major hub for tomatoes in the state, said, "Prices have increased to Rs 700 to Rs 800 per 20kg crate now owing to lesser supply in the market. Prices should come down in a few weeks in August." The average wholesale tomato price increased by 153% in the last 14 days, from Rs 18 per kg on July 18 to Rs 45.55 per kg on Friday at Pimpalgaon and Nashik APMCs. In retail markets of Nashik, the tomato price increased from Rs 25 per kg on July 18 to Rs 70 per kg to date. Rajendra Khare, an official from Nashik APMC overseeing the tomato section, said rain damaged tomato crops, causing a drop in the arrivals of the produce. The arrivals of the tomatoes have dropped by around 40% in the last fortnight, from 10,500 crates per day around a fortnight back to around 7,000 crates per day so far. "The price of tomatoes depends on the quality of the vegetable. People have no choice but to buy it. In wholesale markets, the price for small tomatoes is Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kg, and in retail, we are selling at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg," said Rajesh Borude, a vendor at Somwar Peth. Rohit Suryanwanshi, a vendor at the Hadaspar vegetable market, said that prices in the retail market are between Rs 45 to Rs 60 depending on the quality. "Supply is less in the market, and that is the reason prices are higher. Best quality tomatoes are selling at around Rs 60 a kg," he said. Traders said the upward trend of prices is likely to continue till mid-August or more until the new produce reaches markets.
