Merstham recreation ground's £3m revamp revealed

BBC News13-05-2025
A Surrey park's £3m revamp including a new playground, parkour course and community orchard has been revealed. Merstham recreation ground's facilities also include a new cafe, pavilion, and outdoor gym.The project has been funded by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council (RBBC), Surrey County Council, Community Infrastructure Levy funds, the National Lottery and the government's UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The borough council says it hopes the pavilion, with a cafe kiosk, toilets and changing rooms, will become a new place to meet, as well as providing better facilities for sports teams.
The council is still looking for an operator to take over the running of the cafe.It worked with a specialist supplier to create the parkour course, which it said was the first in the borough, with a range of obstacles to run, jump, vault and climb on.RBBC's deputy leader and executive member for place, planning and regulatory services, Rich Michalowski, says: "It's really exciting to see the plans we talked about with the community come to fruition."He said the new park had "something for everyone" and that designs were developed with input from residents, sports organisations and local groups at various stages along the way.
Existing tennis courts and games areas were also refurbished, with new surfacing and fencing.Merstham resident Sue Reeves, said: "This revamp of the rec is going to be wonderful for Merstham. "All the new facilities will make the rec so inviting for users of all ages."The redesign is expected to reduce flooding in and around the rec with upgrades made to the water channel creating a gravel beach, meadows and wet planting. This will be fenced off for the first year to give the new plants the opportunity to establish themselves, the council says.

BUTLAND PLEDGE: Rangers keeper vows to regain trust of fans after admitting he slipped into 'bad habits' last season

Jack Butland has reassured Rangers fans he's ready to return to top form after admitting that he slipped into 'bad habits' last season. The former England goalkeeper endured a torrid campaign with a string of high-profile errors eventually leading to him being dropped from the team. After describing that as 'a kick up the backside', the 32-year-old looked back to his best when he returned to action against Panathinaikos last week, producing three top-drawer saves as Russell Martin's side took a 2-0 first leg lead in their Champions League qualifier. Speaking for the first time about the most difficult campaign of his career at Ibrox, Butland acknowledged he had addressed his poor form in the early part of the summer, and now feels primed to reproduce the kind of performances which saw him touted for an international recall in his first year in Glasgow. 'I had a good training camp in the summer,' he said. 'I looked at a few things that I felt I'd slipped into a couple of bad habits. And it just gives you a little bit of something to focus on, a different thing to look at. 'And some things that I've taken into this pre-season with a sort of fresh mind ... I'm really excited about the opportunity to work with the manager and what we're trying to do here. 'Whenever there's those question marks over you, I want to define my time here. 'I love it here. I want to be here. So, that can hurt you. 'So, for me, it was, I suppose, a bit of a kick up the backside, if you like. 'Not like I needed it. But if there was any motivation I needed, that was added extra. 'I know and believe I can be a huge, huge part of this club's history and success. And I still intend to do that.' Butland's heroics last Tuesday provided the platform for Findlay Curtis and Djeidi Gassama to strike in the second half. But while Martin's men are in the box seat in the tie, the keeper is expecting the Greeks to come out with all guns blazing in the second leg in Athens tomorrow amid temperatures predicted to hit 37 degrees. 'Yeah, they will and they need to,' he added. 'A lot of the work we've done is off the ball as well. 'We're going to have to be on it off the ball, press them into difficult areas and do what we need to do. 'We were in St George's Park a few weeks back, it wasn't quite 40 degrees, but it was hot enough. 'You know, we're not far off our holidays so the boys have had some heat in recent weeks, so it shouldn't be too much of a test and we're certainly not going to use that as a concern. 'It's going to be difficult for both sides. We travel over there, we take our fans with us and we try and make a difference.'

Lionesses' Euro 2025 triumph will ‘inspire people' and spark change, Wiegman says

Sarina Wiegman said England's defence of their European title 'makes change' and 'inspires people' far and wide, as the Lionesses prepare for a heroes' welcome on the Mall and in front of Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. 'We're England and we want to win but there's so much more than winning a game,' the manager, who won a record third European title in a row following her Euro 2017 victory with the Netherlands and England's triumph in 2022, told Lionesses channels. 'We know winning the Euros makes change. It inspires people. Young kids, but also you see so many more people that you inspire, not just little girls but little boys and grandads and grandmas, whole families, in England but also beyond.' A peak audience of 16.2 million watched England's defeat of Spain in the Euro 2025 final on ITV and the BBC on Sunday and Wiegman took the time to praise supporters for their role, having travelled en masse and tuned in in huge numbers. 'I'm really looking forward to going back to England,' she said. 'The fans have been amazing. I think we always have very good crowds and we never, ever take that for granted. If you look at this tournament, many English fans came to the stadiums and were always in the stands in huge overload. 'It's incredible that all these people took the effort to come and watch us in Switzerland but it's also about the people at home, we've seen some things coming on the social media. It's really nice to go back to England and come together there and celebrate.' England went through three consecutive spells of extra time in the knockout stage on the way to their second major tournament trophy, and Wiegman contrasted the chaos on the pitch with the tone they had set off it. 'Three times going into extra time, that's crazy. I feel this tournament was crazy and chaotic on the pitch. I think off the pitch, everything was pretty calm. Also in the three games, we came from behind – we came from 1-0 or even 2-0 down – I think that shows the quality of the players. The team showed so much resilience but also belief, belief that we can turn things around and we can win by any means. That's the words they used. That's what we showed over and over again.' Of her own reaction after Chloe Kelly's winning penalty went in, Wiegman said: 'I think I just started running. I'd been screaming for three minutes. I just could not believe that we won it. When she went to take that penalty, it was her conviction again, she just loves these moments.' On Monday another hero of the final, the goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, paid tribute to her late grandfather, who died two days before the tournament. Sign up to Moving the Goalposts No topic is too small or too big for us to cover as we deliver a twice-weekly roundup of the wonderful world of women's football after newsletter promotion 'Dear Grandpa,' she wrote in a moving post on social media. 'You were one of my biggest supporters. You believed in me before I even knew what this journey would look like. You were always there – watching, encouraging, teaching. You taught me so much, not just about football, but about life. About staying grounded, working hard, being resilient and doing things the right way. 'I miss our chats. I miss you saying 'Only us athletes understand' – always with a little smirk like you were in on something special. And you were. You got it. You understood what this meant to me. You understood what it took.' Hampton saved two penalties, from the Ballon d'Or holder Aitana Bonmatí and Arsenal's Champions League winner Mariona Caldentey, in the shootout at the end of the Euro 2025 final, and was named player of the match, her second of the tournament following her penalty heroics against Sweden. Hampton had 'Grandpa' printed on the inside of her collar throughout the tournament. 'It breaks my heart that you didn't get to see me walk out for our country at my first major tournament … something you dreamed of for me, something we talked about so many times,' she said. 'But I know, deep down, you were still there. I felt you with me. In the tunnel. On the pitch. In the tough moments. I heard you in my head when I needed strength. I hope I made you proud, Grandpa. I carried you through every minute. And I always will. I did it. WE DID IT.'
