Liam Gallagher's split from Patsy Kensit sparked a Wembley nightmare that still haunts Oasis
Manchester rock legends Oasis are gearing up to headline seven nights at Wembley Stadium, with the first show kicking off this evening. The gigs are part of the Gallagher brothers' highly anticipated UK and Ireland reunion tour and fans are buzzing with excitement.
However, a past Wembley gig still lingers in the band's memory. Their 2000 show at the iconic venue is remembered by Noel Gallagher as 'dreadful' and it has gone down in music history as one of their most cringe worthy moments, something both Noel and Liam have publicly regretted.
As anticipation builds for the 2025 reunion dates, fans will be hoping for a far more triumphant return to Wembley, the Mirror reports.
Tonight's (July 25) gig marks the first time Oasis has played the Wembley Stadium venue since July 2009. The gig came just weeks after the Gallagher brothers split.
It was during the Standing on the Shoulder of Giants tour in 2000 that a now in-famous slurred performance unfolded - today though the Gallagher brothers are older and perhaps a bit wiser than they were 25 years ago.
Their second night at Wembley Stadium in July 2000 was meant to be a major moment, filmed for a live album and TV broadcast. But things quickly went off the rails, becoming a notorious disaster.
Reflecting on the performance years later in 2017, Noel said that Liam should 'hang his head in shame' over what happened that night.
At the time, frontman Liam Gallagher appeared drunk and was slurring lyrics, ranting expletives and sharing personal details on his private life in between songs.
Looking back on the night in a 2017 interview with Radio X, Noel called it a 'low point in Oasis.' He said: "It was a horrible two-and-a-half hours on stage. Liam can hang his head in shame. It was dreadful."
During the performance, Liam made slurred remarks about his breakup with actress and model Patsy Kensit. The couple officially confirmed their divorce in September 2000, ending their three year marriage.
Despite their split, they shared happier times and have a son together, Lennon. Liam and Patsy's break-up was finalised at the London Divorce Court, where Patsy was granted a decree nisi on the grounds of Liams "unreasonable behaviour."
However, in recent years Liam has admitted he has now stopped drinking before he's set to go on stage. Speaking to Radio X, he said: "I've not drank booze on stage since that famous Wembley gig. Remember that one where it all went a bit... "
"Apparently people like that kind of thing but now I steer clear of all of that, do you know what I mean? It's just water man, stuff like that," he concluded.
Despite the younger Gallagher brother's now sober performances, the in-famous uncut footage from 2000 is still available online. The band's Familiar to Millions release ended up externalising the chaotic show - and vocals were edited to salvage the recordings.
Now, 25 years on, despite all this, Oasis fans have never lost love for the indie duo, as thousands gather in London to see Noel and Liam take the stage.

Every kind word, every shared memory, every bit of compassion has meant more than I can ever explain. "Grief is a strange thing—it sneaks up on you in waves-I will not be ok for a while-but knowing my family are not alone in our pain makes a difference. "I'm holding on tight to the love, the light, and the legacy left behind. Thank you for being there. I love you all so much." She signed off" by writing: Kelly #BirminghamForever #OzzyForever" Ozzy was laid to rest last week during a private family funeral on their Buckinghamshire estate. The day before, the Osbournes put on a united family front and made a public appearance in the star's hometown of Birmingham where thousands of fans had gathered to grieve the loss of the heavy metal icon. Ozzy's coffin made it's way down Broad Street in a hearse, stopped beside the Black Sabbath bridge and bench which was adorned with fan tributes. Sharon and her three kids, Aimee, Kelly and Jack, who she shared with Ozzy, were joined by the rock icon's son Louis from a previous marriage, as they emotionally laid their own floral tributes. Birmingham City Council began gathering up the tributes on Monday so they can be stored before being handed over to the Osbourne family. The council said: 'In due course, they will be passed on to the Osbourne family, so they may keep them as a lasting reminder of the public's affection and support.' ‘Role model' father who fell to his death at Oasis gig in Wembley named and pictured
A man who fell to his death during Oasis's Saturday night gig at Wembley has been named as Lee Claydon. The father from Bournemouth fell from the upper tier balcony of the London stadium during a sell-out concert by the Gallagher brothers. Describing him as a 'loving family man' who loved fishing and outdoor activities and a 'role model' to his son, Lee's brother Aaron Claydon said: 'We will miss him so very much.' Aaron paid tribute to his brother on a GoFundMe page set up to support Lee's partner, Amanda, and their family. In the post, he said Lee was 'the man I have always looked up to' who 'would have done anything for any of us'. 'Our family has been turned upside down and are struggling to deal with this devastation and unexpected loss,' Aaron wrote. 'Lee leaves behind his son, dad, partner, brothers, sisters, nephews and niece. 'Lee was a loving family man who was a role model to his son Harry and was loved so much by all his family. Lee would have done anything for any of us and he was taken from us far too soon and we will miss him so very much. 'Lee loved all outdoor activities, one of his favourite hobbies was fishing. He also loved music and his guitar. He also really enjoyed going to watch and support the boys and his nephew at their football games. 'Amanda and the boys have our full support at this very sad time, which is why we would love to be able to help them financially as well as emotionally. 'Please help us raise as much funds as we can to take one worry off Amanda and family right now as they are going through any family's worst nightmare.' 'You just don't fathom you will go out for a night of amazing fun and not come home at the end of it,' she wrote. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Metropolitan Police said: 'A man – aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. 'The stadium was busy and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage. 'If you have any information that could help us to confirm what happened, please call 101.' The Gallagher brothers also said they had been left 'shocked and saddened' by the news of the death following their show. On Sunday, a spokesperson for Wembley said: 'Last night, Wembley Stadium medics, the London Ambulance Service and the police attended to a concert-goer who was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers. 'The police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them.'

Kicking around the Edinburgh music scene for the last decade, the band — comprised of Austen George (guitars/keys/vocals), William Douglas (bass/guitar/vocals) and Andy Duncan (drums/vocals) — have generated flurries of interest, but personal tragedies and bad timing mean they're not nearly as well known as their most vociferous fans and supporters feel they should be. Does this make Miracle Glass Company the unluckiest band in Scotland? Perhaps, but then good bands fail to make it for all sorts of reasons. As a film, Hello Universe recalls Anvil: The Story of Anvil in this sense, just without the decades of perspective that made that film such an entertaining ode to artistic endeavour.
