DOSM sees Malaysia population peaking at 42m in 2059, Chinese community shrinking under 15pc, gender imbalance worsening
According to the Department of Statistics (DOSM), the nation will experience steady population growth with 36.49 million people expected by 2030, followed by 39.78 million in 2040 and 41.79 million in 2050.
Between 2030 and 2060, Malaysia's average annual population growth rate is expected to moderate to 0.5 per cent, peaking in 2059 before starting to decline.
The projection also included a significant change to the Malaysia's ethnic landscape, with the Bumiputera community's share among citizens rising from 71.8 per cent in 2030 to 79.4 per cent by 2060.
The Chinese community will experience a sharp decline in proportion, dropping from 21.1 per cent of the citizen population in 2030 to just 14.8 per cent by 2060.
Indians will also see their share decrease slightly from 6.3 per cent to 4.7 per cent over the 30-year projection period, while other ethnic groups will grow modestly from 0.8 per cent to 1.0 per cent.
A possible contributor to the declining population post-2059 could be the accelerating gender imbalance, with the sex ratio increasing from 112 males per 100 females in 2030 to 114 males per 100 females by 2060.
By 2060, Malaysia's population will comprise 19.2 million males and 17.3 million females, reflecting this demographic trend.
Malaysia also faces a rapidly ageing society with the median age rising from 32.8 years in 2030 to 40.7 years in 2060, marking a significant demographic transition.
The age structure will transform dramatically as the proportion of young people (0-14 years) decreases from 19.9 per cent to 16.0 per cent, while the working-age population (15-64 years) declines from 70.8 per cent to 65.7 per cent.
The elderly population aged 65 and over will more than double from 9.3 per cent in 2030 to 18.3 per cent in 2060, causing the total dependency ratio to rise from 41.3 to 52.3 and placing increased pressure on the working-age population.

We'll study calls to discipline 9 PKR MPs, says Fuziah
PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the report from the 19 party divisions in Johor will be studied to determine if the nine MPs had violated party rules. PETALING JAYA : PKR is looking into calls to take disciplinary action against nine of its MPs over their press conference to demand the establishment of a royal commission of inquiry into judicial appointments and alleged interference in the judiciary. Its secretary-general, Fuziah Salleh, said calls for the nine to be temporarily suspended for their actions would also be looked into, Bernama reported. She said the feedback from various party divisions would be tabled at the central leadership council meeting scheduled to be held in two weeks. 'I am aware of the report by the divisions. So for now, the secretary-general's office will look into it and decide on any further action to be taken,' she was quoted as saying. According to Fuziah, the report would be studied as per the party's code of ethics to determine whether the nine MPs had violated party rules. 'I am just carrying out my duty. The central leadership council will discuss the matter and make a decision. We have a code of ethics, so it needs to be studied whether their actions violated it or not,' she said. On Friday, 19 PKR divisions in Johor called for Rafizi Ramli and eight other PKR MPs to be suspended after the group called for the establishment of an RCI, and a hearing by the parliamentary select committee following delays in the appointment of top judicial positions, which they said amounted to a constitutional crisis. The division chiefs said the MPs' actions not only breached party discipline and ethics, but also cast a negative light on the prime minister's leadership and opened the door to political manipulation by rivals.

The Malaysian High Commissioner to New Zealand, Mazita Marzuki said Ahmad Zahid's visit is part of the government's ongoing commitment to further strengthen bilateral diplomatic relations that have been established for 68 years with New Zealand. The visit, she said, focuses on exploring opportunities for strategic cooperation covering various fields including defence, agriculture, education, halal industry as well as strategic cooperation. 'This visit is expected to further strengthen the long-standing Malaysia-New Zealand bilateral relations across various areas of cooperation. 'It also symbolises the continuation of the highest-level exchange of visits between the two countries, including the working visit by former Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir on May 2 to 4 in 2023,' she said at a press conference here today. Obviously, it includes the continuation of the working visit by former Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters, cum Foreign Minister of New Zealand to Malaysia on June 6-9 2024; as well as the official visit of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to Malaysia on Sept 1-3 2024. The Deputy Prime Minister will also be accompanied by a delegation consisting of senior Malaysian government officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development and the Prime Minister's Department.
