Greece's culture ministry on Tuesday ordered a partial closure of the Acropolis, the country's top monument, to protect visitors amid heatwave conditions. The site would be closed from 1000 to 1400 GMT everyday.(AFP File)
The ministry in a statement said the site would be closed from 1300 to 1700 (1000 to 1400 GMT) 'for the safety of workers and visitors, owing to high temperatures.'
The four-day heatwave that began Sunday is the second to grip Greece since late June.
Temperatures in the country are expected to reach 42 Celsius (107.6 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday, with a maximum of 38 Celsius in Athens.
Similar temperatures are expected Wednesday.
The 2,500-year-old Acropolis, built on a rock overlooking the capital that offers little shade, draws tens of thousands of visitors daily.
Last year it recorded some 4.5 million visitors, an increase of over 15 percent compared to 2023.

The actress posted a couple of pictures from the airport along with a note expressing how recent headlines have worsened her fear of flying. She spoke about how travel, which once felt like an 'escape,' now feels stressful and 'heavy.' 'There's so much unrest in the world... Every flight feels heavier now--not just because of the skies, but because of the headlines we carry with us. Travel used to be an escape. Lately, it feels like holding your breath. Anyone else feeling this travel anxiety too?' read her post. The crash occurred on June 12, when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of the 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. (ANI)

Eight dead, 31 missing in floods on China-Nepal border

Floods triggered by torrential rains tore down a Himalayan mountain valley between China and Nepal on Tuesday (July 8, 2025), with at least eight killed and 31 missing, officials and state media said. The wall of water also swept away one of the main bridges linking Nepal and China over the Bhotekoshi river. Deadly floods and landslides are common across South Asia during the monsoon season from June to September but experts say climate change is making them worse. In Nepal, eight bodies have been recovered and 20 others - 14 Nepalis and six Chinese - are listed as missing, according to police. "Our focus is on search and rescue efforts. We have rescued 57 people so far," Nepal police spokesperson Binod Ghimire told AFP. China's state television CCTV reported that a "mudslide disaster" hit the border area around dawn on Tuesday (July 8, 2025), with 11 people missing on the Chinese side. It said those were in addition to six Chinese construction workers swept away on the Nepal side. Increasingly intense floods and droughts are a "distress signal" of what is to come as climate change makes the planet's water cycle ever more unpredictable, the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization said last year. And the Kathmandu-based International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) warned in June that communities face heightened disaster risks this monsoon season. "Rising temperatures and more extreme rain raise the risk of water-induced disasters such as floods, landslides, and debris flows," ICIMOD said.
