Ministries brief House panel on AI readiness

Hindustan Times3 days ago

Senior officials from the ministries of home affairs, defence, power, and electronics and information technology (MeitY) on Thursday briefed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT, outlining their preparedness around the rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI), people aware of the matter said. The three-hour meeting saw ministries detail how they were adopting AI to improve internal functioning. (Representative file photo)
While MeitY has made presentations to the committee in the past on India AI Mission and broader developments in the sector, this was one of the first sessions where the home, defence, and power ministries were specifically asked to explain their AI strategies. These included measures being taken by the government to prevent AI-led harms, the people said.
'The committee has been keen to understand how different arms of the government are approaching AI, how it is being used, what safeguards are in place, and what are the plans for the future,' a person, requesting anonymity, said.
The three-hour meeting saw ministries detail how they were adopting AI to improve internal functioning while also flagging growing risks such as cybersecurity threats, deepfakes, and the misuse of social media.
Officials also responded to questions from committee members about the role of AI in countering cyber fraud and misinformation, especially as deepfakes become harder to detect and more widely used in scams, the people cited above said.
The panel has been holding a series of such reviews over the past few months, having invited representatives from the financial sector to present their AI readiness a couple of months ago. According to one official, the committee routinely seeks written responses from stakeholders and uses these meetings to follow up with more detailed inquiries.
Apart from AI, Wednesday's meeting also included the review and adoption of draft reports on the government's response to the committee's earlier recommendations regarding the 2024-25 budget allocations for the departments of posts, telecommunications, information and broadcasting, and the MeitY.

Upcoming phone launches in July 2025: OnePlus Nord 5 series, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and more

If you are looking to buy a new phone, it might be wise to wait a few more days, as July is shaping up to be a month full of smartphone launches. While OnePlus and Samsung will be the two brands taking the spotlight, there are also a number of smaller but important launches that could offer multiple options for those looking for a new phone on a budget. Here's a look at the top upcoming phone launches in July 2025. OnePlus is all set to launch its latest entrants in the Nord series—the Nord 5 and Nord CE 5—at the Summer Launch Event on 8 July. The new phones will also be followed by the OnePlus Buds 4, the successor to last year's OnePlus Buds 3 launched alongside the OnePlus 12. The OnePlus Nord 5 is confirmed to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, while the Nord CE 5 will feature the MediaTek Dimensity 8350 Ultimate processor, previously seen in the Infinix GT 30 Pro and Motorola Edge 60 Pro. Samsung has confirmed that it will hold its next Galaxy Unpacked event on 8 July. While the company hasn't officially revealed the devices it will launch, it is all but certain to unveil the new Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold lineup. Apart from the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung is also reported to be launching the Galaxy Z Flip FE and the Galaxy Watch 8 series at the event. A new Galaxy Buds lineup could also make its debut, along with potential hints about Samsung's latest One UI 8 update. Madhav Sheth-led smartphone brand AI+ will launch its first set of devices on 8 July. The first two models from the company, called Pulse and Nova 5G, will also be available on Flipkart and Shopsy. According to a dedicated Flipkart microsite for the Nova 5G, the phone will feature a 50MP primary camera and come in five colour variants. It will pack a 5,000mAh battery and support up to 1TB of expandable storage via microSD card. Tecno Pova 7 will debut in India on 4 July. The new phone will feature customisable lights around the camera module, which Tecno calls the Delta Light interface. If it follows its global counterpart, it could be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8350 Ultimate processor, feature a 1.5K AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, and come with a 6,000mAh battery and 70W wired fast charging. Honor has confirmed it will soon launch a new smartphone in India, the Honor X9c, which will be an Amazon exclusive. While there is no confirmed launch date yet, the phone is likely to debut in July. The Honor X9c is expected to feature a 6.78-inch 1.5K AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 4,000 nits of peak brightness. It is likely to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

Microsoft Mandates AI Tool Use, Links It to Employee Reviews Amid Fresh Layoff Concerns

Microsoft is taking a firm stance on AI integration within its workforce, now requiring employees to actively use the company's internal AI tools as part of their daily responsibilities. This move comes as the tech giant aims to boost adoption of its AI services and aligns with broader operational shifts—including more layoffs expected in July. According to a report from Business Insider, Microsoft managers have been instructed to factor AI tool usage into performance evaluations. In an internal memo, Julia Liuson, President of the Developer Division, emphasized the non-negotiable nature of AI in the modern workplace. 'AI is now a fundamental part of how we work,' Liuson wrote. 'Just like collaboration, data-driven thinking, and effective communication, using AI is no longer optional — it's core to every role and every level.' Sources familiar with the matter reveal that certain teams are even considering formal metrics to track how employees use AI, especially with concerns around low internal adoption of Microsoft's own AI offerings like Copilot. Despite substantial internal promotion, tools like Copilot reportedly haven't gained the expected traction, partly due to competition from external platforms such as Cursor. Now, Microsoft is emphasizing hands-on engagement with its AI tools—especially for employees directly involved in developing AI products. While a few secure third-party tools like Replit remain permitted, the focus is clearly shifting to in-house solutions. This policy shift arrives during a period of continued workforce reduction. After several rounds of layoffs, particularly within the Xbox division, sources suggest another significant wave of job cuts could happen as early as next week. Bloomberg reports indicate that thousands of gaming-related roles may be eliminated as part of an ongoing restructuring plan. The upcoming layoffs would mark the fourth time since 2023 that Microsoft has reduced headcount within its gaming unit. The division has faced mounting financial scrutiny following the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In June alone, over 300 employees were let go, adding to the more than 6,000 roles already cut in recent months. With internal adoption of AI tools now a top priority and financial efficiency under the microscope, Microsoft is sending a clear message: adaptability and AI proficiency are no longer optional—they are essential to staying on board.
