AI-powered baseball training comes to Indy
The big picture: Boston-based tech company Pison is betting on its AI-driven neural sensors to revolutionize youth baseball training, quantifying the impact that stress, head injuries and other hurdles can have on reaction times down to the millisecond.
The latest: Pison announced Tuesday a revenue-sharing partnership with Prep Baseball, the nation's largest scouting service for amateur baseball.
Pison's wearables will roll out early next month in Prep Baseball venues in Indiana and Kansas City, where more than 175,000 young baseball players practice.
Pison has measured cognitive performance in military members and ALS patients before branching out into sports.
The company rolled out Baseball Pro earlier this year after partnering with Timex on making the device.
In Indianapolis, expect to see the tech put into practice during tournaments, workout showcases and other scouting events.
How it works: Baseball Pro is a platform in a wrist-worn wearable that analyzes the electrical signals running through a player's brain and nervous system to their muscles.
It can measure the impact that mental health, wellness and other cognitive factors have on baseball players, including their reaction time while batting or pitching.
What they're saying:"If you're cognitively declined, and you've got all the physical attributes in the world, you're not going to overcome that cognitive decline," says Marc Deschenes, a former pro baseball player and vice president of sports operations at Pison.
But a player who is mentally prepared with fewer physical strengths can perform better than expected on a given day, Deschenes tells Axios.
Zoom in: Pison and Prep Baseball will track each player's cognitive performance as part of their overall stats.
The player owns the data, and it will be up to the player to decide whether to release that information to a scout or college recruiter, says Pison CEO John Croteau.
Flashback: Pison started testing its cognitive performance technology for baseball in 2024 with five colleges: Penn State University, West Virginia University, Auburn University in Alabama, Oklahoma State University and Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma.
The intrigue: Pison's supercharged scouting tech arrives in Central Indiana as the digital sports training market explodes, thanks to an AI-powered push.
A Technavio report released in October 2024 predicts the market to grow by $1.24 billion from 2024 to 2028.
What's next: By 2026, Baseball Pro will roll out across all other Prep Baseball venues, which serve thousands more players.
A baseball coach at Lansing Community College in Michigan, another college working with Pison, plans to use players' metrics from Baseball Pro to make daily lineup decisions.

Red Sox pitcher Tanner Houck to undergo Tommy John surgery
BOSTON — Boston Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck's attempt to come back this season is over. Manager Alex Cora said Saturday that Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery. An All-Star last season, the 29-year-old Houck went on the injured list in mid-May with a right flexor strain after going 0-3 with an 8.04 ERA in nine starts. 'Tanner's going to have Tommy John surgery,' Cora said before the Red Sox beat the Houston Astros 7-3 at Fenway Park. 'He went to see Dr. Meister there in Texas and that was the recommendation,' Cora said. 'We don't have a date yet, but he's going to have it.' Houck had a strong 2024 season, finishing seventh in the American League with a 3.12 ERA in 30 starts, but was only able to make five rehab appearances after going on the IL. 'Tough year for him, tough year for us,' Cora said of the season-ending news. 'But he'll kill the rehab, he'll do his job, and when he comes back, he's going to be OK.' Houck earned his first All-Star appearance by going 8-6 with a 2.54 ERA in the first half. He struggled after the break, going 1-4 with a 4.23 ERA. He worked an inning at the All-Star Game in Texas last year, giving up three hits including a homer to Shohei Ohtani. 'A year ago I was at the All-Star game and now this year, going under the knife again, unfortunately. It's just a mater of time of putting the pieces back together, coming back stronger and just getting back out there,' Houck said Sunday morning in Boston's clubhouse. 'I know the minimum (to return) is probably around the 12-month mark, 12-to-14 month mark. With that being said, if everything goes right, 12 months from now, I plan on being back out there, running out to the mound at Fenway.' He's the third Boston starting pitcher to suffer a season-ending injury. Hunter Dobbins tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee covering first base last month and Kutter Crawford underwent right wrist surgery. The team hopes the pickup of righty Dustin May at the trade deadline from the Los Angeles Dodgers will bolster the staff. He's expected to make his first start for the Red Sox on Wednesday at Fenway. 'It was definitely a ride of emotions, up and down,' said May, sitting in the dugout on Saturday of being dealt to Boston. 'Sad leaving because I've been there my whole career, but very, very excited to be joining this organization.' May knew his days as a starter with the Dodgers were likely coming to an end this season with a few starters expected to come off the injured list. 'I was kid of pushed out,' he said. Sleep on Austin Bashi\u00a0at your own risk after UFC on ESPN 71
LAS VEGAS – Austin Bashi met the media Saturday after his first-round submission win over John Yannis at UFC on ESPN 71. Yannis (9-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) stepped in on short notice to take on the highly touted Bashi (14-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and was a big underdog at the UFC Apex. Bashi showed why when he got his first UFC win with a standing rear-naked choke with about 90 seconds left in the opening round. Bashi was supposed to fight Francis Marshall for his sophomore UFC outing until Marshall pulled out not long before the event. The 23-year-old Michigan-based featherweight said all he cared about was making sure he stayed on the card – and didn't care who the opponent was going to be. Bashi was a heavy favorite when he came through and earned a contract on DWCS this past September. He then was expected to make a splash in his official UFC debut when he took on Christian Rodriguez in January. But as a 3-1 favorite, Bashi dropped a decision for the first loss of his MMA career. He said that experience helped set him up for Saturday's win – and what he wants to happen going forward. 'After that last fight, I saw who my true supporters were, and I saw who was sleeping on me – and there were a bunch of people sleeping on me,' Bashi said at his post-fight news conference. 'This was to prove something to myself – not really to the world, but to prove something to myself how hungry I am and how bad I really want it.'
