Tamil Nadu Open University faculty protest against additional teaching duty at other colleges

The Hindu5 hours ago
Faculty members of the Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) have begun an indefinite sit-in protest on its premises demanding the cancellation of orders by the Directorate of Collegiate Education deputing a section of them for additional duty at other colleges.
The faculty said the TNOU only had 37 faculty for its 32 departments against a sanctioned strength of 105. Most of the departments had a single faculty taking care of all academic and administrative responsibilities. With the already disproportionate workload, the additional duty of taking classes at other colleges would only add to the burden.
The order, dated on June 30, stated that seven faculty members from the Tamil, English, botany, geography, chemistry, physics, and political science departments have been deputed to Presidency College as a result of 44 new courses being introduced from the current academic year, since the process to appoint guest faculty for these courses was still under way.
In a statement on Tuesday, the TNOU faculty members said the proposal was part of the agenda before the Finance Committee and Syndicate, which met in April. They demanded that the additional duty clause be removed from the minutes of the meetings.

"Is Nitish Kumar in unconscious state": Pramod Tiwari slams Bihar govt on incidents of violence, including 9 murders in 24 hours

New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Congress leader Pramod Tiwari hit out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar questioning his government's ability to maintain law and order in Bihar, citing recent incidents of violence, including 9 murders in 24 hours, with 5 people burned to death in Purnia. He condemned the statement of Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, calling Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav the 'Gabbar of Bihar' and accusing him of creating an atmosphere of fear during his rule. Pramod Tiwari said, 'I condemn these statements. Moreover, 9 murders have occurred in Bihar in 24 hours out of which 5 were burned to death (in Purnia). Is Bihar inside India or not? Will the law of the country apply here? If there is Jungle Raaj anywhere then it is Bihar where maximum murders are taking place. Is Nitish Kumar in an unconscious state, or is he under the pressure of BJP? He is not the Nitish we knew. BJP and Nitish government has not right to stay in power, they have implemented the 'Rule of Jungle'' Three main accused, including a minor, have been arrested after five members of a family were allegedly burnt alive on July 6 in Titgaon village of Bihar's Purnia district, in a suspected case of witchcraft-related violence. Purnia District Magistrate Anshul Kumar visited the village following the incident. He told ANI, 'This incident happened on 6th July. At night, five people were beaten up and burned alive. Yesterday, the police and administration recovered all the bodies. The post-mortem has been done, and the last rites have been performed. A case has been registered against around 23 named accused. An FIR has also been registered against 150-200 unidentified people. The police have caught the main accused... In regard to this case, 3 people have been caught, of whom one is a minor.' Reacting to a political row triggered by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's sharp response to Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray's statement, Pramod Tiwari accused the BJP of using the language of Hooliganism. He further said, 'Is this the language of a Parliamentarian or BJP causes to talk like this? Will they say 'Tumko patak patak ke maarenge'. I accuse the BJP of using the language of Hooliganism.' Earlier Addressing Raj Thackeray's controversial instruction to his party workers, 'beat but don't make a video,' Dubey lashed out, saying, 'What are you doing, whose bread are you eating? You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? We have all the mines in Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha. What mines do you have? All semiconductor refineries are in Gujarat.' He went on to challenge those targeting Hindi-speaking individuals and said, 'If you dare to beat Hindi speakers, then beat those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu too. If you're such a 'boss', come out of Maharashtra--come to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu. 'Tumko patak patak ke maarenge'...' (ANI)

CM: BJP MP Dubey's comments on language row inappropriate

Mumbai: CM on Tuesday said BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's comments on the language row were "inappropriate". Speaking to the media at Vidhan Bhavan, Fadnavis said Dubey spoke in the context of an organisation, not about the Marathi manoos in general. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Yet, in my view, it (Dubey's remark) was not appropriate because the meaning that comes from it creates ambiguity among people," he said. Dubey had said, "You people are surviving on our money. What kind of industries do you have? If you... beat those who speak Hindi, you should beat all those who speak Urdu, Tamil, and Telugu. If you are such a 'big boss,' come to Bihar, UP, TN - 'tumko patak patak ke maarenge'." Fadnavis said the contribution of the Marathi manoos in defending the country's culture was historic and these experiments (to divide people) would not work. "The Marathi manoos does not think small; he thought of the entire country, not just about Maharashtra. When invaders tried to destroy India's culture, it was Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj who fought to defend it. Even at the battle of Panipat, Ahmed Shah Abdali wrote a letter to Marathas offering a pact: he said if he got Punjab up to Peshawar, now in Pakistan, and Balochistan, he would recognise the rest of Bharat as part of Maratha empire. Marathas refused it. Their aim was to save Akhand Bharat. Even today, Maharashtra contributes the most to GDP."

Macron urges new era of Anglo-French unity in address to UK parliament

WINDSOR: President Emmanuel Macron argued Tuesday that France and Britain must work together to defend the post-World War II "international order", as he addressed parliament on the first day of his UK state visit. The first such visit by an EU head of state since Brexit, Macron said in a wide-ranging speech that the two countries must renew their century-old alliance to face down an array of threats. "As permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, deeply committed to multilateralism, the United Kingdom and France must once again show the world that our alliance can make all the difference," he told British lawmakers, speaking in English. "Clearly, we have to work together... to protect the international order as we fought (for) it after the Second World War," Macron added. Touching on various thorny issues, from global conflicts to irregular cross-Channel migration, he insisted European countries will "never abandon Ukraine" in its war with Russia while demanding an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. Hours earlier, the French president and his wife Brigitte had received a warm, pomp-filled welcome from King Charles III and Queen Camilla in Windsor as the three-day visit got underway. They had been greeted off the presidential plane at an air base northwest of London by heir-to-the-throne Prince William and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales. After a 41-gun salute sounded from Windsor's Home Park and a royal carriage procession through the town, which was decked out in French Tricolores and British Union flags, the group entered its castle for lunch.
