What the 'Cool Shot' On Your Hair Dryer Actually Does
Because I find this sentiment so relatable, I do just about everything in my power to stay on the 'good' side of the hair day equation. I deep condition. I use scalp oil. I detangle my wet hair with a wide-toothed comb. However, no matter how often I've heard that cold air is imperative for setting a blow out, I've always skipped that step. I don't know why, but I've never truly understood the importance of the 'cool shot' button on the blow dryer.
That is until I got my hands on the new Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer. Spoiler: it's even lighter and faster than previous versions, making it a true treat for a hair-obsessed freak like me. Best of all, the cool air button is so visible and so ridiculously easy to use, that now I'm addicted. I barely even need to think about it—all it takes is a light touch to turn it on.
Once I became a 'cool shot' convert, I discovered a whole new world. Yes, finishing my blow out with a jet of cold air from roots to ends really does make the style last longer—even my sweaty Zumba class can't derail my straight, smooth hair—but the cold air also offers even more benefits than I realized.
The benefits of cold air on hair
After my divine encounter with the Supersonic cool shot button, I spoke with stylist Maria Roberts to understand why hair pros are so insistent on the use of cool air. The most immediate advantage? A blast of cold air keeps the cuticle from becoming overloaded with heat, thus protecting it from breaking and fraying.
Of course, one of the big advantages of a Dyson hair dryer is that it apparently never heats up the hair. However, Roberts says the extra cool air still helps seal the cuticle. 'We're talking about an optical effect, because by blowing the hair dryer with cold air in the right direction—i.e. downwards—the cuticle is set,' she says. This is why one of the biggest mistakes that can be made when trying to create waves or curls is to release them while they are still warm. The residual heat can undo the shape achieved and prevent the style from lasting; a cool shot 'freezes' the style in place.
Cool air fights frizz
Finishing with a mini-dose of cold air not only fixes the hairstyle and adds shine, it's also an excellent way to avoid frizz—especially if you have fine or delicate hair. In fact, Roberts tells me that at her salon in Ibiza—where the summer can be steamy—the cool shot is de rigueur for every one of the blow-outs the stylists perform. 'We always finish with cold air at the roots to avoid frizz around the crown, something that's very common in places with beaches and humidity,' she explains, adding that you can use also use the cool shot to avoid flyaway baby hairs on a polished updo.
How to use the cold air button on a blow dryer
Now that we're all in agreement about how important it is to use the cool shot, let's talk about how to correctly use it. Roberts recommends either dividing hair into sections or applying the air in a global way, focusing especially on the roots. From there, it's quick: You only need to hit the hair for a few seconds with the cool air to achieve the life-changing, day-making results.

Want to Look Like You Just Stepped Off the Amalfi Coast? Try the Retro Dolce Vita Bob
Every item on this page was chosen by an ELLE editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy. From claw clips to finger waves, French twists and Bardot bangs, retro hairstyles have been making a major resurgence of late. And the latest one rising to the top of our mood boards, signaling the return of polished and glamorous styles, is the 'dolce vita' bob. Popularized in the 1950s, and reemerging thanks to celebrities like singer-songwriter Raye, whose sculpted, coiffed bob is now something of a signature, this retro bob is officially trending. Everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Cardi B and Zendaya are making a strong case for the bouncy, polished curls and short crop. Think of it as the new, more modern iteration of the 'old money' bob, which went viral last year and saw the return of rather expensive-looking, shiny lengths and the signature 'tucked under' crop from the '50s take shape. Drawing inspiration from the voluminous silhouette of old, the 'dolce vita' bob is all about achieving an ultra-polished finish and bouncy volume. 'This longer bob length shape shares the same luxurious and glamorous texture of the old money bob, but with extra volume and a more cushioned, weightless finish,' shares trend forecaster and hair expert, Tom Smith. How to make it work for your hair type? 'This is for those who like volume and who have thick hair or who want to create that illusion,' shares Smith. 'The long, soft, and fluid layers help to give movement to finer hair and manage the bulk of thicker hair,' he adds. Though it's best suited to those with naturally wavy or curly hair, anyone with straighter lengths can also achieve the look using heated rollers or a classic curling wand. If you haven't mastered the art of rollers yet, fear not—there are plenty of tools, tips, and techniques at your disposal to recreate this hairstyle too, like ghd's Duet Blowdry to Dyson's Airwrap. 'The look can be achieved with a blow-dry using a round brush, but you can also use heated rollers, or tools such as the Dyson Airwrap with the curl attachments,' Smith agrees. Finally, don't forget copious hairspray and a smoothing cream for that polished finish. From: ELLE UK

Launches We Love In July: From Seashell Jewelry To Parisian Candles
In Launches We Love, features and special projects director Kim Peiffer highlights the most buzzed-about new launches and collaborations she's currently shopping. Read on for the products she can't stop talking about in July. Here at Forbes Vetted, our editors shop for a living, so we're pretty in the know about product launches, cool collaborations and all-around coveted new items. It says a lot about the quality of a product or brand when our own staff can't wait for a new launch to finally drop—whether it's a collaboration between two brands we know and love or a unique one-off product founded by an exceptional entrepreneur. We've combed through this month's most exciting launches, from jewelry to luxury pajamas. Illustration: Forbes / Photo: Retailers So far this summer there's been an influx of newbies hitting the market, from fashion and beauty to home and wellness. I'm taking the shopping research off your plate (because who has the time when you'd rather be at the beach?) and rounding up all of the worthy collaborations and launches that recently dropped, so you can easily find my (and likely your soon-to-be) new favorites. Below, all the newness I haven't stopped talking about—or stopped shopping—this month. The moment we've all been waiting for: The new Dyson Airwrap Co-Anda2x Multi-Styler and Dryer is here, and it packs a powerful punch. The Co-Anda2x produces twice the air pressure of the Airwrap's previous iteration to dry hair as fast as a full-performance hair dryer. It also features new intelligent attachments that allow hair to dry, curl, wave, straighten, smooth and volumize with air. This model also automatically adjusts heat and airflow to wrap, style, set and release the perfect curl every time, plus an app that allows you to create a unique hair profile to personalize your curl sequence, heat and airflow settings with each attachment. Bottom line: It's genius. What could be lovelier to receive at your doorstep than a breezy Nantucket-inspired bouquet from UrbanStems, paired with an eight-pack of famous New York City bakery Levain's mouthwatering cookies? Nothing, I assure you. (P.S. This also makes for a fabulous hostess gift this summer.) Shopbop is celebrating summer by teaming up with Solid & Striped to release a coastal-chic swim collection, inspired by the Prime Video hit The Summer I Turned Pretty , in preparation for the show's Season 3 premiere. Within the collection you'll find whimsical bikinis, classic one-piece suits, gingham sets and more pieces that are making me crave a trip to the coast, stat. After a successful expansion into footwear and handbags, it's only natural that clothing brand Veronica Beard would expand into beautiful jewelry that is elevated, versatile and modern. Debuting with 10 essential silhouettes—including tortoise earrings, resin bangle bracelets, enamel bead chain necklaces and dainty anklets—the pieces are the perfect cap to the brand's classic yet modern aesthetic. Sporty & Rich Sporty & Rich is back for its third installment of the popular Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc collection, and it's just as stylish as I imagined it would be. Think: pieces designed to blend with the timeless elegance of the French Riviera, as only Cap-Eden-Roc guests would want—crisp shirting sets, tennis duds, soft-yet-chic sweatshirts and more. My rec? Buy them up now; this collection will sell out. Nothing makes me happier at the end of a long day than showering and applying Sol de Janiero's epic Bum Bum Cream from head to toe—until now. The viral beauty brand just debuted a new body lotion, and it delivers fast-absorbing, weightless hydration perfect for summer, with the signature divine scent we all know and love. Typically, if someone utters the words 'Four Seasons' to me in any context, I'm already sold—and this cute summer pajama collection is no exception to that rule. Crafted from a breathable linen-cotton blend perfect for summer temps, this set features all the details you never knew you needed in sleepwear: crisp white piping, an embroidered logo and beautiful bespoke packaging that makes this set perfect for gifting (to yourself or others, of course). A limited-edition collection between fashion brand Staud and luxury resort brand St. Regis is exactly what our summer needs. From bold accessories to poolside lounge pieces, this collab is the vacation inspiration I've been looking for. My personal favorite is this raffia Moon Tote Bag—perfect to pack in a suitcase this season for a variety of occasions. How charming are these dainty, mismatched coastal-inspired huggie earrings from jewelry brand Gorjana's sweet summer collection? Featuring 18k gold-plated brass, the best thing about these earrings may just be the fact that you can swap out any of the brand's Parker Charms on the loops (or just wear them sans charms) for multiple looks. Founded in Paris in 2023, this luxury home fragrance brand recently entered the U.S. market, and its candles and home fragrances have been consistently selling out ever since. Composed of essential oils sourced from plants, flowers, herbs and spices, these handmade candles are housed in ceramic jars crafted by artisans in the brand's Parisian atelier. They're just as gorgeous-looking as they are incredible-smelling, trust me. Unlike most massage guns on the market, Rally's products were created to restore balance to aching muscles by recovering smarter, not harder. This recovery device delivers precise, soothing relief that helps break up sore muscles without overly punishing them (i.e., pain is not always gain).

How to keep your home cool this summer – without spiking your energy bill
With record-breaking temperatures becoming a seasonal norm, the challenge of keeping your home cool is no longer reserved for far-flung climates. In the UK – where traditional homes are built to trap heat, not release it – rising temperatures can turn living spaces into stifling ovens. And with air conditioning still a rarity (and a costly one at that), finding effective, affordable alternatives has never been more important. We spoke to the experts to uncover smart, sustainable ways to keep your home cool without driving up energy costs. From airflow tricks and thermal-savvy window treatments to breathable organic bedding and strategic greenery, their advice offers practical solutions for staying comfortable through the hottest days. Invest in a fan that works smarter, not harder It might seem obvious, but one of the simplest ways to stay cool is also one of the most overlooked: a decent fan. Not all fans are created equal, and the cheap, noisy models often end up doing little more than pushing hot air around. Instead, consider investing in a powerful, energy-efficient option that delivers real results – without draining your wallet. Take the Dyson Cool CF1, for instance. Its brushless DC motor generates a smooth, even breeze and draws only 30 watts of power at maximum fan speed for energy-efficient cooling. It also has a customisable sleep timer, ensuring no wasted energy. Target where the sun hits hardest One effective way to reduce the sun's impact on your indoor temperatures is by applying solar control film to your windows. 'Although there's an initial investment, it can make a noticeable difference in rooms with south-facing windows or those that tend to overheat,' explains Liam Spencer, owner of window specialist Northallerton Glass. 'You don't need to cover every window – just focus on the ones that receive the most sunlight for maximum benefit.' Spencer also recommends embracing the power of a night purge by opening your windows after sunset to invite in cool, refreshing air. Then, as dawn breaks, close and shade your windows to trap that overnight chill inside, creating a comfortable refuge from the rising heat. Wool? For summer? Groundbreaking. Wool might traditionally be associated with warmth, but it's also a (surprisingly) smart choice for staying cool in summer. Lisa Conway from carpet specialists Brintons explains: 'Wool is always an excellent choice due to its natural insulating properties, and one lesser-known advantage is its cooling ability. Helping to regulate both temperature and humidity, wool carpets and rugs can prevent too much heat from coming through the floor – ultimately contributing to a more comfortable, energy-efficient home.' Comfort and coolness in every thread Other natural fibres offer similar benefits. When it comes to bedding, linen and cotton do more than help regulate temperature – they can actually improve sleep quality. Their natural breathability helps prevent overheating at night, while their soft, moisture-wicking fibres keep you dry and comfortable. Linen, in particular, grows softer with every wash, offering a relaxed, lived-in feel that encourages deeper, more restful sleep. Look to Piglet in Bed for high-quality bedding crafted from sustainably sourced natural fibres, available in a range of playful patterns and soothing tones that bring both comfort and character to your bedroom. Shade and serenity in every leaf Outdoors, consider planting fast-growing climbers like honeysuckle, clematis, or grapevine on trellises positioned near south-facing walls or windows. These living shade screens not only block harsh sunlight but also create a cooling microclimate around your home. If you shower in the morning, try turning off your boiler during the day, it just adds unnecessary heat Marta de Sousa, interior designer Indoors, introduce heat-fighting houseplants that double as decor – areca palms and peace lilies act as natural humidifiers, whilst aloe vera and snake plants absorb heat and release oxygen at night, making them ideal for bedrooms and living spaces. Tackle hidden heat makers Remember, it's not just the sun making your home warmer – many everyday appliances quietly add to the heat. 'Lights, ovens, computers, TVs, and electronics all give off heat,' says property developer and interior designer Marta de Sousa. 'Better to cook outdoors or have a barbecue if you can and avoid using the tumble dryer during the day.' Even lighting choices matter: incandescent bulbs give off heat along with a cosy glow. Swapping them for energy-efficient LEDs or keeping lights off during the day can make a noticeable difference. Your boiler can also add unexpected warmth. 'If you shower in the morning, try turning off your boiler during the day,' de Sousa suggests. 'There's no need to keep hot water stored when you're not using it – it just adds unnecessary heat.' Heating water overnight and switching the boiler off during the day helps keep your home cooler and cuts energy bills. Electronics left on standby also emit residual heat, so unplug anything you're not using. Small changes like these can go a long way to keeping your home comfortable through summer.
