Microsoft advances ‘1 million AI learners' commitment at Dubai AI Week 2025
Microsoft is placing AI skilling and talent enablement at the center of its agenda, underscoring its belief that empowering individuals with the right capabilities is the foundation of a successful, inclusive AI-enabled future.
In line with its ongoing initiatives to advance the AI National Skills Initiative, Microsoft will conduct virtual sessions in private schools across Dubai for teachers and students aged 14 to 18. These sessions will be offered in both English and Arabic. Students will be shown how AI powers tools like Bing Chat, Minecraft, and Copilot that they already use; and they will discover paths to AI literacy that are available to all for free, such as Microsoft Learn, LinkedIn Learning, and AI for Beginners. Teachers, meanwhile, will discover resources that allow them to explore Microsoft AI tools that use AI to enhance teaching and learning, such as Reading Coach, Reflect, Copilot, and Bing Chat. They will also be taught the importance of safe and responsible AI in the classroom.
Participation from schools across Dubai signals national momentum toward building a digitally fluent society, where AI literacy is a core part of the learning journey.

In parallel with its skilling initiatives, Microsoft is contributing to high-level conversations on AI's role in shaping future industries and economies. Bill Borden, Corporate Vice President, Worldwide Financial Services at Microsoft, will represent the company at the Emirates NBD-hosted GenAI Summit, joining leaders from McKinsey and Gartner to explore how generative AI is redefining financial services.
Microsoft's senior leadership will also participate in the AI Retreat, a closed-door forum hosted by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The retreat convenes policymakers, technologists, and industry leaders to co-create the future of AI in government and business.

Through this multi-tiered engagement, Microsoft is reinforcing its role as a trusted skilling partner, a technology leader, and a responsible innovator—helping the UAE and the broader region unlock the full potential of AI.
Dubai AI Week is aimed at solidifying Dubai's role as a global hub for AI innovation, governance, and application. The five-day event brings together more than 180 thought leaders from more than 15 countries.

Honeywell and LG CNS focus on automation and intelligence
LG CNS, a digital transformation and innovation business based in South Korea, has recently established a foothold in the US through a deal to jointly develop AI-related smart manufacturing technologies with automation company Honeywell. LG CNS is becoming an official Honeywell AI and IT service partner to focus on so-called AX technologies covering factory automation and intelligence. The company stated it is the first South Korean business to tie-up with the US giant. The collaboration is set to pair LG CNS' expertise in AX consulting and service creation with Honeywell's knowledge of producing sensors and control equipment. The companies intend to develop a multi-sector manufacturing execution system (MES) to manage facilities, processes and personnel in real time. There are also plans to explore fresh fields in production and logistics based on a programme LG CNS is engaged in with customers in its domestic market. It mentioned an agentic AI set-up which is used to assess factory plans for risks. LG CNS and Honeywell intend to sell their AX technology globally using the US company's base of more than 100 large customers. But LG CNS president and CEO Hyun Shin-kyun emphasised the initial focus is on breaking the US market, saying the collaboration 'is the first step for both companies to think together and seek technological solutions' for manufacturers in the country. Amazon announces job cuts across its AWS Unit
Amazon is said to have cut hundreds of jobs in its Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit, as the company continues to invest billions in its data centre infrastructure as part of an AI push. Reuters reported Amazon confirmed the job cuts, but it did not provide an exact number. The news agency reported in June Amazon CEO Andy Jassy warned the use of generative AI would lead to a reduction in its workforce. 'We've made the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS', a representative for Amazon told Reuters. 'These decisions are necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimise resources to deliver innovation for our customers'. Several impacted employees told Reuters yesterday (17 July) they had lost their jobs and their computers were deactivated. Amazon spent $24.3 billion on capex in Q1, down from $26.3 billion a year ago.
