The ‘nightmare' story behind the creepy prop awarded to the Liberty's defensive player of the game
At the start of the season, Liberty video coordinator and player development coach Brian Lankton wanted to try something new.
He hoped the team would embrace it. That, or they might think it was silly.
He took the chance anyway.
So after the Liberty beat the Aces in their season opener, Lankton pulled out a replica of Freddy Krueger's infamous claw-like glove from the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' movies and explained what it means to be the team's 'glove' of the game.

Liberty announce Jonquel Jones' return timeline amid injury
The post Liberty announce Jonquel Jones' return timeline amid injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Liberty provided a key injury update on Jonquel Jones before their upcoming matchup against the Seattle Storm. Advertisement Jones suffered an ankle injury on June 20 during their previous game against the Phoenix Mercury. New York lost 89-81, but her injury proved to be important as she left in the second quarter and didn't return. New York gave their update on Jones with an injury report on June 21. The team confirmed it was a right ankle sprain as she will be absent for at least a month. 'Jonquel Jones suffered a right ankle sprain at 8:35 in the second quarter of Thursday night's game against Phoenix. Jones previously sprained her right ankle on Thursday, June 5 against Washington,' the post read. 'After further imaging and evaluation, Jonquel avoided long-term injury, and she is projected to return to game action in approximately 4-to-6 weeks. Further updates will be provided as appropriate. Get well soon, JJ!' What's next for Jonquel Jones, Liberty John Jones-Imagn Images Jonquel Jones' injury came at a bad time for the Liberty, especially as they got off to a hot start this season. Advertisement The fact that it was the second time she sprained the ankle brings concern to New York as they need to her to stay healthy throughout the campaign. Throughout nine games this season, she averaged 12.1 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. The Liberty are 8-1 when she plays and 2-1 without her. Despite the small sample size, their loss to a solid Mercury squad might present a challenge to their overall depth as a whole month without Jones may prove to be difficult for the WNBA powerhouse. New York boasts a 10-2 record on the season, possessing the top spot of the Eastern Conference standings. They are 1.5 games above the Atlanta Dream and four games above the Indiana Fever. The Liberty will prepare for their next matchup, being on the road. They face the Seattle Storm on June 22 at 7 p.m. ET. Mercury one-ups franchise 3-point record after torching Liberty
The post Mercury one-ups franchise 3-point record after torching Liberty appeared first on ClutchPoints. PHOENIX– When the Phoenix Mercury made franchise history against the Chicago Sky on Saturday, it might've been a one-time thing. However, the New York Liberty endured the same fate at the hands of the Mercury. Advertisement After the Mercury made 17 threes on Saturday, they made 18 on Friday against the reigning WNBA champions. Following Friday's 106-91 win, head coach Nate Tibbetts glanced at the stat sheet and saw the number of 3-pointers made. When asked about it, he paid homage to his NBA roots with the Portland Trail Blazers. 'I was in Portland for eight years with Damian (Lillard) and CJ (McCollum), so we had some pretty good nights there,' Tibbetts said, chuckling. 'I don't know if what we did historically has been done at this level. But yeah, it was fun.' Whitcomb and Sabally combined for 12 of the 18 threes made. Both were coming off screens, pin-downs, and a multitude of actions. Even with as elite a defense as the Liberty has, they consistently got open. Advertisement However, the Alyssa Thomas effect loomed large, as the defense gravitated towards her the moment she stepped into the paint. At that moment, it seemed the defense forgot all about the shooting on the outside. Not to mention, 'the engine' tied the Mercury's franchise assist record with 15 assists, once again. The Mercury stars had jokes for a 3-point barrage vs Liberty Consecutive games of making history seems like an all too familiar tale this season. Thomas herself has made history, along with Sabally. Not to mention, Whitcomb has made some of her own as well. The trio took the stage at the podium, and had a subtle, yet comical answer if they'd ever seen history like this before. 'Mhm… I have not,' Thomas said. Advertisement 'First time in WNBA history, right?' Sabally asked. 'Yep, the room said.' 'So, no.,' Sabally laughingly said. Whitcomb and Thomas bursted out in laughter, as did the entire press conference room. The synergy and connectivity within the Mercury is undeniable. They were heavily underestimated heading into the season. Despite injuries to stars, they've maintained a 12-4 record, with defeating the Liberty twice in a matter of eight days. While the wins were without Jonquel Jones, it doesn't discredit the win itself. Furthermore, 106 points is the most New York has allowed all season. The defensive undertone, mixed with the green light to launch an open 3-point shot is a recipe for success. The Mercury will take on the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, and hope to end the month with their seventh straight victory.
