2025 SEA Games safety priority amid Thailand-Cambodia tensions
OCM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said that although the situation is worrying, he is confident a solution can be reached before the biennial Games begin in December.
'Firstly, we are a little concerned about the Thailand-Cambodia conflict. However, we hope a solution will be found by the time the SEA Games are held.
'So far, there has been no decision from the SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) and what we need to do is stay calm because we also know that Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair, the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) is striving to assist in resolving this crisis,' he said.
He said this after attending the CSI1 Prime Minister's Cup, which also serves as an equestrian qualifying tournament for the 2025 SEA Games.
Mohamad Norza said that with only a few more months left before the SEA Games are held in Bangkok, Chonburi and Songkla from Dec 9-20, the national athletes are continuing to train as usual, while the athlete selection process is also being carried out as scheduled.
'I am in contact with them (sports associations). No decision has been made yet, and I hope this issue can be resolved soonest possible so that everyone can focus on their preparations for the SEA Games.
'We pray that the tense situation (between Thailand and Cambodia) will not escalate. We always prioritise the interests, safety and welfare of our athletes and officials,' he said - BERNAMA

Checkmate, Malaysia crowns its first chess Grandmaster
KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time in the nation's history, Malaysia can proudly call one of its own a Grandmaster (GM), the highest title awarded in the world of chess. Yeoh Li Tian, a 25-year-old prodigy from Petaling Jaya, officially earned the coveted GM title after securing his third norm and surpassing the 2500 FIDE rating mark by winning the GM-IM Invitational Chess Championship 2025 held here today. The title, awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is a lifelong honour and places Li Tian among an elite group of fewer than 2,000 Grandmasters worldwide. Speaking to Bernama, Li Tian, who began playing chess at the age of three, admitted that his journey was long and grueling, marked by sacrifices and perseverance. "I always tell people that I have no childhood. So I guess that that will be my biggest sacrifice. "Since young, like even in primary school, I go to school, come back, do my homework and then I start working on chess," he said. When asked about achieving the GM title on home soil, he said the moment was even more meaningful after narrowly missing the opportunity during the 2022 SEA Games in Hanoi. "I felt really relieved and happy to actually get my last norm back in Malaysia. "I hope that it inspires more chess players to play chess," he added. Looking ahead, Li Tian remains uncertain about his next steps but hinted that he might compete in the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand at the end of this year. "Malaysia Chess Federation (MCF) already approached me for this SEA Games. "I think there's a high chance that I will be playing," he said. Meanwhile, MCF President Akhramsyah Muammar Ubaidah Sanusi described Li Tian's achievement as a historic milestone in the nation's chess history. He said the MCF is now more determined than ever to nurture and produce more Malaysian GM, with the goal of elevating and strengthening the local chess scene. "I feel the achievement is a new positive and healthy development for the game of chess in the country. "We do not want this achievement to stop here and if can, we want more GM from Malaysia to emerge, just like what has been produced by neighbouring countries like Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines," he said.– Bernama

OD Esports crowned champions of Mobile Legends tournament in conjunction with HPPNK 2025
KOTA KINABALU: OD Esports emerged as champions of the 'Mobile Legends NAFAS-NEKMAT' e-sports tournament held in conjunction with the 2025 National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here today. The Papar-based OD Esports team dominated the tournament, which began on Friday, defeating 42 other teams and taking home RM4,000 in cash, a trophy and certificates. The runners-up were Sonic The Hedgehog from Kota Kinabalu, who received RM2,000, a trophy and certificates. Stark Origin finished in third place, earning RM1,000, while Sonic Esports X came in fourth and took home RM600. Both teams also received trophies and certificates. Prizes were presented by Farmers' Organisation Authority (LPP) chairman Datuk Mahfuz Omar and Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil. Also present were National Farmers' Organisation (NAFAS) general manager Muhammad Faris Arriffin and National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) general manager Azrin Shah Ismail. Adrian Adlie Ku, 21, a member of OD Esports from Tenom, said the e-sports tournament benefited him and his four teammates by allowing them to build on their shared passion for the game. 'We got to know each other through Mobile Legends and have been a team since last year. 'With so many young participants in a large-scale tournament like this, we are able to exchange experiences and techniques to improve our gameplay,' he said, expressing joy over their win. Meanwhile, Daniel France, 32, manager of Sonic The Hedgehog, said the Mobile Legends tournament at HPPNK 2025 was well organised and helped uncover local talent among Sabah's youth. 'I hope e-sports can be further developed in this state as it offers many benefits to the younger generation,' he said. The event also saw 11 individuals walk away with attractive lucky draw prizes, including an electric scooter, a gold wafer coin and a wristwatch, while Wan Mohd Salleh Mahrawi was announced as the grand prize winner of a motorcycle.
