In collaboration with InvestHK, HKSTP joined forces with the LKS Faculty of Medicine at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for the first time to form a delegation and led 16 prominent life and health technology companies to showcase at BIO 2025 held in Boston, USA.
The HKSTP Pavilion highlighted the groundbreaking technologies and products of its park companies, featuring innovative solutions across diverse fields such as novel drug development, diagnostic technologies, and medical innovation. Among the 16 participating companies, they were the members of HKSTP's incubation programmes including Incu-Bio and ELITE Programme, cutting-edge work from the InnoHK research centers, and other outstanding biotech companies. On the first day of the exhibition, the delegation successfully attracted attention from global industry leaders, corporate partners, and venture capital firms.

Three HKSTP companies—ARBELE, GenEditBio, and Cogsmart—excelled in the preliminary rounds, competing against over 100 global life sciences firms, with ARBELE, HKUMed's affiliated spin-off company, winning the championship, underscoring Hong Kong's research excellence. Over the past three years, this platform has helped startups secure over USD 100 million in funding and connect with hundreds of international investors and partners, driving further business growth.

Innovative company uses game-changing method to address concerning issue with electric vehicle batteries — here's what's happening
A solvent recycling plant in Thailand is expanding, making the electric vehicle battery manufacturing process more environmentally friendly, Reccessary reported. The operation of an EV is much more eco-friendly than the operation of a gas-powered vehicle because EVs do not produce any tailpipe emissions, so they do not add to the air pollution that contributes to the warming of the planet. Switching from a gas-powered car to an EV is an excellent way to decrease your negative impact on the environment. That being said, the EV battery manufacturing process is often criticized for its environmental challenges, as it is the most polluting part of making an EV. Solvents are used during the production of EVs and their batteries and are a necessary part of the process due to their ability to dissolve dirt and evaporate quickly. They are a key component of the lithium-ion batteries that EVs use. Solvents are often incinerated directly after use, creating three times more carbon emissions compared to when they are recycled. Thailand's Sun-up Recycling specializes in solvent recycling. According to CEO Siamnat Panassorn, one of the industry's challenges is to retrieve solvents from used EV batteries and reuse them to produce new batteries, a process that they are trying to improve and expand, per Reccessary. Sun-up Recycling's process involves a unique distillation technology that separates mixtures in waste solvents and purifies them, Recessary reported. The result is a recycled solvent that is 99% pure. The recovery rate, or amount of reusable material, is 80-95%. They find that using recycled solvents can reduce carbon emissions produced during battery manufacturing by about 77%. The recycled solvents function almost identically to new solvents and save customers money because they no longer need to purchase new ones. Solvent recycling is a key component of Thailand's Bio, Circular, Green (BCG) policy. Introduced in 2021, the government policy encourages manufacturing industries to invest in new technologies that add value to products without increasing the negative effect they have on the environment. Panassorm has observed that the pressure for the EV manufacturing industry to reduce its environmental impact has increased over time, per Recessary. Luckily, the process is improving. Sun-up Recycling is projecting a 10% revenue growth this year and contributes some of that money to solvent recycling technology. Panassorm hopes to expand to international markets so more customers — and the environment — can benefit from the process. Ben Lamm Represents The Potential Of Biotech, And Why We Should Keep Supporting Innovators
The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence in genetic engineering, health care, and medical research could lead to significant improvements in human health and our ecological environment in the decades ahead. But biotech innovators and entrepreneurs worldwide will have to overcome a global political environment that has suddenly become skeptical of science, expertise and public health in general. Last week, 20,000 scientists, executives, investors and startups descended upon Boston for the BIO 2025 Convention – the largest medical research and biotech convening in the world. The convening took place amidst significant opportunity – and turmoil, in health care worldwide. The rapidly expanding capabilities of artificial intelligence are unlocking new opportunities to develop new drugs, therapeutics, wearables and devices. But BIO also comes at a time of significant declines in government funding for basic science and R&D, as well as a drop in global leadership around public health challenges like pandemic preparedness. BIO 2025 Exhibition Hall In 2025, the United States is expected to announce cuts of 40-60% to the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation. Yet American states are offering biotech's R&D credits, seed funding, lab space and commitments to improve their workforce and academic institutions. Nations around the world, sensing opportunity, are also rolling out the red carpet to attract the top scientists in the world. BIO itself highlighted the importance of building public trust in biotechnology and working with regulatory bodies to streamline approvals for innovative products. Colossal Biosciences is a great example of a biotech startup at the intersection of these trends and challenges. The biotech industry worldwide continues to grow in importance, and no doubt there will be continued investment in the basic science, R&D and commercialization that drives important companies like Colossal and others. It is less clear whether that leadership will come from the United States or other nations – such as the United Arab Emirates, India, China, Japan or elsewhere? We don't know what areas of innovation those nations will prioritize, and whether or not important moonshots – like bringing back the woolly mammoth, will be on their radar. American leadership – scientific, political and financial, needs to remain committed to improving health of humans and the planet at large.
