China, Hong Kong stocks rise on policy steps to ease price wars

Express Tribune15 hours ago
China and Hong Kong stocks rose on Tuesday, tracking broader gains in Asia, as investors looked past the latest shift in US President Donald Trump's tariff plans and welcomed Beijing's new measures to curb price wars.
China's blue-chip CSI300 Index.CSI300 climbed 0.7% by the lunch break, while the Shanghai Composite Index.SSEC gained 0.6%. Hong Kong benchmark Hang Seng.HSI was up 0.8%.
The market reaction in Asia was rather muted after US President Donald Trump on Monday began telling trade partners - from powerhouse suppliers like Japan and South Korea to minor players - that sharply higher US tariffs will start on August 1, marking a new phase in the trade war he launched earlier this year.
China's top leaders pledged last week to step up regulation of aggressive price-cutting by Chinese companies, as the world's second-biggest economy struggles to shake off persistent deflationary pressures.
Shares of solar manufacturers led gains onshore, with Tongwei 600438.SS up 10%, after China's industry ministry pledged to curb disorderly low-price competition in the photovoltaic industry.
Deeper policy efforts to curb excessive competition are expected to help rebalance industrial supply and demand, support a rebound in producer prices, and improve long-term earnings expectations for A-shares, analysts at Huaxi Securities said in a note.
Semiconductor shares.CSIH30184 also rose, up 1.1%, as a slew of companies posted upbeat profit alerts.
Consumer-related shares climbed in Hong Kong, as subsidies from food delivery platforms boosted consumer demand. Xiabuxiabu 0520.HK, a hotpot restaurant, rose nearly 7%.
Hang Seng Tech Index HSTECH was up 1.3%.
Traders are watching for China's key inflation data due on Wednesday to gauge the health of the world's second-largest economy in the face of persistent deflation pressure and trade risks.

Trump announces 50pc tariff on copper imports

WASHINGTON/TOKYO: US President Donald Trump broadened his global trade war on Tuesday as he announced a 50% tariff on imported copper and said long-threatened levies on semiconductors and pharmaceuticals were coming soon. One day after he pressured 14 trading partners, including powerhouse US suppliers like South Korea and Japan, with sharply higher tariffs, Trump reiterated his threat of 10% tariffs on products from Brazil, India and other members of the BRICS group of countries. He also said trade talks have been going well with the European Union and China, though added he is only days away from sending a tariff letter to the EU . Trump's remarks, made during a White House cabinet meeting, could inject further instability into a global economy that has been rattled by the tariffs he has imposed or threatened on imports to the world's largest consumer market. US copper futures jumped more than 10% after Trump's announcement of new duties on a metal that is critical to electric vehicles, military hardware, the power grid and many consumer goods. They would join duties already in place for steel, aluminum and automobile imports. US pharmaceutical stocks also slid from the day's highs following Trump's threat of 200% tariffs on drug imports, which he said could be delayed by about a year. Other countries, meanwhile, said they would try to soften the impact of Trump's threatened duties after he pushed back a Wednesday deadline to August 1. Trump's administration promised '90 deals in 90 days' after he unveiled an array of country-specific duties in early April. So far only two agreements have been reached, with the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Trump has said a deal with India is close. Trump said countries have been clamoring to negotiate. 'It's about time the United States of America started collecting money from countries that were ripping us off ... and laughing behind our back at how stupid we were,' he said. HIGHEST LEVELS SINCE 1934 Following Trump's announcement of higher tariffs for the 14 countries, US research group Yale Budget Lab estimated consumers face an effective US tariff rate of 17.6%, up from 15.8% previously and the highest since 1934. Goldman Sachs said Monday's actions would add 1.4 percentage points to the US effective tariff rate. Trump's administration has been touting those tariffs as a significant revenue source. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington has taken in about $100 billion so far and could reach $300 billion by the end of the year. Global stocks showed muted reaction on Tuesday, as investors took in their stride the latest twist in the tariff saga. Trump said he will 'probably' tell the European Union within two days what rate it can expect for it exports to the US, adding that the 27-member bloc had been treating his administration 'very nicely' in trade talks. The EU, the largest bilateral trade partner of the US, aims to strike a deal before August 1 with concessions for certain key export industries, such as aircraft, medical equipment and spirits, according to EU sources. Brussels is also considering an arrangement that would protect European automakers with large US production facilities. However, German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil warned that the EU was prepared to retaliate if necessary.

Unsafe buildings: ABAD underscores need for comprehensive reforms

KARACHI: The Association of Builders and Developers (ABAD) has demanded for immediate legislative action and comprehensive reforms to address the growing crisis of unsafe buildings in Karachi following the recent tragic collapse of a five-story building in Lyari. Speaking at a press conference held at ABAD House, Muhammad Hassan Bakhshi said that the competent authority should take immediate legislative action and comprehensive reforms to address the growing crisis of unsafe buildings in Karachi to avert tragic incidents of building collapse in the city. Bakhshi along with Senior Vice Chairman Syed Afzal Hameed, Vice Chairman Tariq Aziz, and other said that the city has witnessed 12 such incidents resulting in 150 deaths over the past few years, attributing these tragedies to 'corruption, greed, and negligence.' The ABAD chairman also criticised the Sindh government for failing to enact proper legislation regarding dilapidated buildings, adding that a disturbing pattern where property owners deliberately wait for buildings to collapse to claim plot ownership was observed. He requested the Sindh government to find solutions for approximately 700 identified unsafe buildings across the city. 'These buildings should be inspected with the assistance of National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK),' he urged. ABAD chairman also pointed out the widespread illegal construction in the city, where additional floors are being added to existing structures without proper authorisation. 'These constructions put public life and property at risk,' he said and added that such buildings typically have a lifespan of only 15-20 years. Bakhshi alleged that local administration, police, and relevant authorities are complicit in these illegal activities, while vulnerable populations are forced to live in these dangerous structures. He urged the government to increase compensation amount from Rs 1 million to Rs 2.5 million. The chairman ABAD further revealed that over the past seven years, authorities like MDA and LDA have collected over Rs 25 billion rupees for residential schemes that have never been delivered to the public. Bakhshi proposed that ABAD could construct dilapidated buildings within 700 days and is prepared to build 100,000 houses if requested by the Sindh government, suggesting the government to collaborate with Chinese companies in this regards.
