Nick Pivetta dominates as Padres shut out Nationals
June 25 - Nick Pivetta tossed seven shutout innings Wednesday and the San Diego Padres logged their MLB-high 13th shutout in a 1-0 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals.
Pivetta (8-2) gave up just three hits, walked none and tied his season high with 10 strikeouts. It marked the fourth time this year -- but the first since April 22 -- that Pivetta delivered seven shutout innings. Jeremiah Estrada pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and Adrian Morejon took care of the ninth for his second save.
MacKenzie Gore (3-8) was a tough-luck loser after allowing only one run on five hits over six innings. Gore walked three, fanned six and lowered his earned run average to 3.09.
The only run came in the bottom of the second. After getting two outs, Gore walked Tyler Wade. Elias Diaz followed with an infield hit and a wild pitch moved them into scoring position. Luis Arraez punched a single into left that scored Wade before Diaz was thrown out at the plate.
Washington didn't get a hit until Daylen Lile singled to lead off the third, but he was picked off by Pivetta. Alex Call lined a single up the middle with two outs in the fifth and Jacob Young bunted for a hit in the sixth, but the Nationals didn't put anybody into scoring position all game.
Arraez managed three of San Diego's six hits, stretching his hitting streak to 12 games. He started the first with a single and Fernando Tatis Jr. drew a two-out walk, but Gore whiffed Gavin Sheets.
The Padres missed on a couple of chances to tack on to their lead. Diaz led off the fifth with a single and reached second on Arraez's groundout, but Gore induced a popup from Manny Machado and got Jackson Merrill to chase a slider off the plate for a strikeout.
Merrill opened the eighth by walking, but was forced at second when Tatis hit into a fielder's choice. Tatis stole second before Sheets fanned, then Jose Iglesias whiffed on a breaking ball off the plate to end the inning.
The game capped a stretch of 26 games in 27 days for San Diego. The Padres posted a 13-13 record to lose three games in the standings to the NL-West leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

The addition of Tom Brady to the ownership board of the Las Vegas Raiders led to many raised eyebrows across the league. Now, the former champion is clarifying his role. Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, had a deal finalized last year to join the team's ownership group under majority owner Mark Davis. However, it came after Brady agreed to being a color commentator for Fox Sports - which would typically give him access to privileged information from players and coaches to use on broadcasts. 'And then [head coach] Pete [Carroll] does his job and Spy [GM John Spytek] does his job and, I think, we trust them to make the right decisions. 'I'm there as a great sounding board for anything they want to do.' What remains to be known is Brady's day-to-day with the team, with the former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback not revealing what he does daily. Brady re-iterated that he is 'just trying to contribute in the ways that I can to help the team be the best they can be, on and off the field' while praising the staff in the franchise 'We've got a great group of people. I love Mark. He's done an incredible job getting the team to Vegas, getting the stadium built. 'Pete is new this year; he's got a big role to play,' Brady added. 'And so does John Spytek. And we're trying to do the right things every day. So that's what we're trying to do.' He also gave insight into the working relationship between Carroll, a Super Bowl winning coach with five decades of experience, and Spytek, a longtime scout and executive in his first GM role. 'They've worked together very well, and there's a lot of decisions that are made,' Brady said. 'Winning games in September starts with what happens in February, March, and April, when no one's really watching. They've been hard at work. 'And our goal is to, you know, win a lot of football games. You've got to work hard at it, and it's all earned, and we've got a tough division. There's a lot of good opponents we face. But it's going to be up to the guys and their daily commitment to doing the right things.' Last season, the Raiders went 4-13 in a hyper-competitive AFC West division.
