Kettering Health cyberattack; Hacker group claims responsibility, sensitive info put on dark web

In an update sent to News Center 7 Thursday, the health network also reported security enhancements have been made to their secure systems, a thorough review of all systems was completed by internal and external teams, and ongoing protection measures were put in place.

'A thorough review of all systems was conducted by external partners and our internal team, and all necessary security protocols, including network segmentation, enhanced monitoring, and updated access controls, are in place,' the spokesperson said in the statement.
'We are confident that our cybersecurity framework and employee security training are sufficient to mitigate future risks. We have strong confidence that our network-connected devices are secure, and our connections to our partners are fully protected.'

Kettering Health also formally acknowledged the hacker and ransomware group Interlock as being responsible for the attack. The hacker group had previously not claimed responsibility before this week, despite reports from CNN that they were responsible.

Cybersecurity expert Luke Connolly told News Center 7 Thursday Interlock has both claimed responsibility for the cyberattack and has posted nearly 1,000 gigabytes for download on the dark web.
The update provided by Kettering Health did not address News Center 7 questions seeking information on services and protections that might be offered to patients and employees now that sensitive information has been released.

2 cats test positive for rabies in DeKalb County
Two dead cats have tested positive for rabies recently in DeKalb County, county officials reported Thursday. DeKalb County said one cat tested positive at Maryland Drive in Doraville. The other one tested positive at Cedar Ridge Trail in Stone Mountain. The county said it's not unusual for the county to report several rabies cases each year. Rabies in endemic to Georgia, and the virus is present all year long. The Georgia Department of Health says rabies is usually reported in wild animals such as skunks, raccoons, foxes and bats. These animals sometimes infect dogs, cats and livestock through bites. Also, children should make sure not to handle wild or stray domestic animals. The Georgia Department of Health said it's a misperception that rabid animals are easily identified by drooling and foaming at the mouth. Instead, infected animals may stagger, appear restless, be aggressive, have difficulty walking, seem overly friendly or appear to be choking. Rabies can be prevented in humans if medical care is sought quickly after an exposure. Thoroughly clean the wound immediately with soap and water, and call your doctor as soon as possible. Those who are concerned about possible rabies exposure can call the Georgia Poison Center 24 hours a day, seven days a week: Atlanta 404-616-9000 or statewide 800-282-5846. Kettering Health Cyberattack: Here's what is being done for patients with sensitive info on dark web
Kettering Health has announced that they have resumed normal operations after key services were knocked out by a cyberattack for nearly three weeks. 'Our investigation is ongoing, and we will directly notify any impacted individuals,' Kettering Health said in their press release. MyChart, which was restored Monday, is functional for patients.
