Central Asian nations condemn Pahalgam attack, resolve to fight terror

Indian Express06-06-2025

The Foreign Ministers of Central Asian countries Friday unequivocally condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and stressed that the perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terror acts must be held accountable and brought to justice.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hosted the India-Central Foreign Ministers dialogue, which took place after more than three-and-half years. The meeting was attended by Kazakhstan Deputy PM Murat Nurtleu, Kyrgyz Republic's Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubayev, Tajikistan's Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin, Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Uzbekistan's Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov.
The ministers also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to the joint statement, the countries condemned the Pahalgam attack and 'reaffirmed their firm commitment to fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations and reiterated that providing safe haven, using terrorist proxies for cross-border terrorism, terror financing, arms and drugs trafficking, dissemination of a radical ideology and abuse of cyber space to spread disinformation and incite violence, goes against the basic principles of humanity and international relations.'
'They stressed that perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of terrorist acts must be held accountable and brought to justice. In this context, they called for early adoption of the UN Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism,' it said.
'They stressed the need to strengthen UN-led global counter-terrorism cooperation and fully implement the relevant UNSC resolutions, Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy and FATF standards,' it said.
The ministers, as per the statement, reiterated their 'strong support for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan which is free from terrorism, war and drugs… The Ministers agreed to continue close coordination and consultations on matters related to Afghanistan'.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar appreciated the Central Asian nations that 'stood by India and condemned the heinous terrorist attack' while reaffirming that it would be a 'trusted development partner' for Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. He said the cooperation between India and Central Asia received a 'quantum boost' following the PM's visits to all five countries in the region in 2015.
Jaishankar said both India and the Central Asian nations are committed to advancing mutually beneficial cooperation in areas of trade and investment, defence, regional connectivity, security and new and emerging technologies.
According to the joint statement, 'The ministers emphasized optimum usage of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to enhance connectivity between India and the Central Asian countries' while 'India reiterated its support for the membership of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in INSTC'.
The ministers also appreciated the First meeting of the India-Central Asia Joint Working Group on Chabahar Port held in Mumbai in April 2023. India welcomed the interest of Central Asian countries to utilize the services of Shahid Beheshti Terminal at the Chabahar Port for facilitating their trade with India and beyond.
As per the statement, they also 'expressed interest in joint exploration of rare earth and critical minerals. Appreciating the outcomes of the first India-Central Asia Rare Earth Forum held in September 2024 in New Delhi, they called upon the relevant authorities to hold the second India-Central Asia Rare Earth Forum meeting at the earliest convenience. The Ministers also encouraged exchange of delegations to explore new areas of cooperation in critical minerals'.
They also agreed to prepare ground to hold the second India-Central Asia Summit at a mutually convenient date in 2025.

Minister Ponnam accuses BJP of discriminating against BCs

Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has slammed the BJP, accusing the party of continuing its discriminatory approach towards Backward Classes (BCs) by not allowing a BC leader from filing the nomination for the post of the party State unit president. He alleged that the BJP had once again exposed its 'anti-BC stance' by sidelining BC leaders in internal party affairs. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Prabhakar questioned the BJP leadership's commitment to social justice, pointing out that the party, despite having three BC MPs and several senior BC leaders, had failed to appoint a BC as its State president. The Minister said that in the past, the BJP had made promises to make a BC leader the Chief Minister, but it had failed to honour those commitments. 'They did not even consider appointing a BC as the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly,' he said. He contrasted this with the Congress's measures, stating that social justice is achievable only through the Congress. He said the party had appointed a BC leader as the PCC president. Highlighting the Congress-led initiatives in Telangana, Mr. Prabhakar said the government was moving forward with a caste census and had brought in legislation to ensure 42% reservation for BCs in political, educational, and employment sectors. Referring to the leadership change in the State BJP ahead of the last Assembly elections, he said the party had removed BC leader Bandi Sanjay and replaced him with G. Kishan Reddy, further reflecting its disregard for backward classes.

India set to outpace G7 in growth & demographic strength: PHDCCI

India is set to outpace G7 nations in both economic growth and demographic strength, according to the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI). India's real GDP growth, averaging over 8 per cent between 2021 and 2024, has made it the fastest-growing major economy and a key driver of global economic momentum, as per PHDCCI's new report titled 'Population, Productivity, Partnership: Rethinking G7-India Collaboration.' India is poised to outpace G7 nations in growth and demographics, driven by robust reforms, digital infrastructure, and a young workforce, according to a PHDCCI report. With real GDP growth averaging over 8 per cent (2021â€'2024) and rising trade with G7 countries, India is emerging as a global economic force. The report highlights collaboration in energy, digital governance, and innovation. 'India's consistent real GDP growth makes it the key growth driver for the world economy. The transformative reforms including GST, Insolvency and Bankruptcy Act, Production Liked Incentive Scheme, growing digital infrastructure (Aadhaar, UPI) and make in India, among others, is strengthening India's ascendency in the World,' said Hemant Jain, president of PHDCCI, in a press statement. A crucial factor underpinning this growth is India's demographic advantage. With over 68 per cent of its population currently in the working-age group (15–64 years), the country is well-placed to expand its labour force, boost domestic consumption, and drive innovation through a vibrant startup ecosystem and increasing tertiary education enrolment. In contrast, G7 countries are grappling with demographic challenges. Over 10 per cent of their populations are aged 65 and above—a share expected to double by 2030—raising concerns about shrinking labour pools, slowing economic output, and rising old-age dependency. India's global economic presence is also rising. Its share of global GDP in purchasing-power-parity (PPP) terms increased from 7 per cent in 2020 to 8.3 per cent in 2024, with projections indicating it will exceed 9 per cent by 2029. The report further highlighted a 61 per cent increase in India's merchandise trade with G7 countries, rising from $154 billion in FY21 to $248 billion in FY25. This growth reflects India's improving export competitiveness and external sector resilience. At the recent G7 Outreach Session in Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India's leadership in clean energy, digital innovation, and climate action. Initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE, and the Global Biofuels Alliance were cited as key contributions to a greener, more inclusive global future, added the report. India also showcased its ethical, people-first approach to AI and digital governance, spotlighting initiatives such as BHASHINI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) as models for global cooperation on AI, resilient tech supply chains, and the responsible use of emerging technologies. Enhanced collaboration between India and the G7 in areas such as clean and renewable energy, digital governance, trade and supply chain resilience, maritime security, and healthcare will foster a balanced, inclusive, and sustainable global growth trajectory, the report concluded.
