Boeing hires former Northrop executive to lead Air Force One program, sources say
Sullivan, who previously worked on key Northrop programs including the B-21 bomber, replaces Gregg Coffey, who is moving to another role at the U.S. planemaker.
Boeing did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for a comment.
The Air Force One program, which involves converting two 747-8 aircraft into VC-25B jets equipped with advanced communications and defense systems to serve as the next generation of U.S. presidential air transport, has faced chronic delays over the last decade.
Delivery of the two new 747-8s is three years behind schedule and now expected in 2027.
The news of the appointment comes after the U.S. military in May accepted a 747 jetliner as a gift from Qatar. The Air Force was tasked with evaluating options to quickly upgrade it for presidential use.

Trump says Brazil's Lula can call him anytime
WASHINGTON/BRASILIA, Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva can call him anytime to discuss tariffs and other friction between the countries. "He can talk to me anytime he wants," Trump said of Lula, speaking to reporters at the White House. He added he was fond of the Brazilian people but "the people running Brazil did the wrong thing." Later, speaking with reporters in Brasilia, Brazil Finance Minister Fernando Haddad called Trump's remarks "great," saying he is sure Lula feels the same, and would be willing to receive a call from the U.S. president. In a post on his X account, Lula said Brazil has always been open to dialogue, although he did not mention Trump nor his earlier remarks. Trump slapped a 50% tariff on Brazil, with many exemptions, starting next week to fight what he has called a "witch hunt" against former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is on trial on charges of plotting a coup following his election loss in 2022. The U.S. also announced sanctions on a Brazilian Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial. Lula has rejected both the sanctions and the tariffs, calling them "unjustifiable" and an "unacceptable" interference in Brazil's justice system. Haddad said his planned virtual meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent next week will pave the way for an eventual meeting between Lula and Trump, but noted such a move would require preparation. Earlier this week, Haddad said Brazil needed assurance Lula would not face the same treatment as Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who came under fire from Trump and Vice President JD Vance during a heated exchange at the White House earlier this year.

Commanders cleared to build new stadium in D.C.
August 1 - After nearly three decades of playing in Maryland, the Washington Commanders have the green light to build a new $3.7 billion stadium in D.C. that should bring them back to the nation's capital by 2030. The D.C. Council voted 9-3 on Friday to ratify the deal between the city and the NFL team. The site of the new 174-acre complex will be the same as RFK Stadium, which remains in place even though the team moved out prior to the 1997 season. "This is a historic moment," Commanders managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. "This project is about more than delivering a world-class stadium worthy of our players, fans and the region. It's about revitalizing a critical part of our city, creating thousands of jobs and unlocking long-term economic benefits for the District. We look forward to working with our fans, residents, community leaders and elected officials to deliver on this vision." The franchise enjoyed its finest years at the RFK site, which opened in 1961 as District of Columbia Stadium. During the team's 36 seasons at RFK, it won Super Bowls VII, XXII and XXVI while appearing in two more and earning eight other playoff appearances. Since former owner Dan Snyder moved the team to now-Northwest Stadium in Landover, Md., in 1997, Washington has amassed just seven playoff appearances in 28 years. Last season's run to the NFC title game was the Commanders' first push past the divisional round since 1991. Snyder's decision to sell his team in 2022 - a move encouraged by the NFL - helped pave the way for the franchise's return to D.C. In addition, Harris indicated his willingness to foot more of the bill than most owners. According to details of the deal, the Commanders are expected to handle $2.7 billion of the stadium's cost along with any overruns.
