Imran Khan To Ben Stokes: 5 Captains To Score 100 & Take 5-Wicket Haul In Same Test

News183 days ago
In the 148-year-long history of Test cricket, a total of five captains have scored a century and taken a five-wicket haul as well in the same Test. Here's a look at them:
Ben Stokes entered his name in the history books on Saturday (July 26) by becoming the first England and overall fifth captain in the world to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in a Test match. The 34-year-old all-rounder bowled 24 overs in the first innings of the ongoing fourth India-England Test at Old Trafford in Manchester and picked up 5 wickets for 72 runs. He then came out to bat at No. 6 for the hosts and, with the help of 11 fours and 3 sixes, scored 141 runs from 198 balls.
In the last 148 years, a total of 82 players have captained England in 1088 Test matches, but Stokes is the first one to score a century and take a fifer as well in the same Test.
The last Test captain before Stokes to score a century and take at least five wickets in an innings was Imran Khan of Pakistan. The legendary all-rounder achieved that feat against India in Faisalabad in 1983.
Here's a look at five captains who have scored a century and taken a five-wicket haul in a Test match:
Denis Atkinson (West Indies) vs Australia, Bridgetown (1955)
West Indies' great Denis Atkinson was the first captain in the history of Test cricket to score a century and take a five-wicket haul in the same Test. He achieved the feat against Australia during the match played in Bridgetown from May 14 to 20 in 1955. Denis came out to bat at No. 7 in the first innings and scored 219 runs and then picked up 5 wickets for 56 runs in the second innings, where he bowled 36.2 overs.
Legendary all-rounder Garry Sobers was the second Test captain to score a century and take a fifer in the same Test. Sobers scored 174 runs from 260 balls as a No. 6 batter for the West Indies in the first innings of the 1966 Leeds Test against England and then finished with figures of 19.3-4-41-5 in the first innings to bowl England out for just 240 runs. In the second innings he picked up three more wickets to help his side win the contest by an innings and 55 runs.
Mushtaq Mohammad (Pakistan) vs West Indies, Port of Spain (1977)
Pakistan's Mushtaq Mohammad came out to bat at No. 5 against the West Indies in the first innings of the Port of Spain Test played from April 1 to 6 in 1977 and scored 121 runs. He then bowled 10.5 overs as well and picked up five wickets for 28 runs. In the second innings of that match, Mushtaq scored 56 runs again and picked up 3 wickets to set up Pakistan's win by 266 runs.
Imran Khan (Pakistan) vs India, Faisalabad (1983)
In the 1983 India-Pakistan Test match played at Faisalabad from January 3 to 8 in 1983, Imran Khan scored 117 runs from 121 balls as a No. 7 batter in the first innings after dismissing 6 Indian batters for 98 runs in 25 overs. In the second innings once again, Imran picked up five wickets for 82 runs in 30.5 overs and sealed his side's win by 10 wickets.
Ben Stokes (England) vs India, Manchester (2025)
Ben Stokes bowled 24 overs for England in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester and picked up 5 wickets for 72 runs. He then came out to bat at No. 6 and, with the help of 11 fours and 3 sixes, scored 141 runs from 198 balls. Stokes is overall the fourth England cricketer after Tony Greig, Ian Botham (5 times), and Gus Atkinson to score a century and take a fifer in the same Test.

Selectors Ignore My Son, Even After Match-Winning Knocks: Washington Sundar's Father Slams BCCIs Selection Policy

India managed to pull off a gritty draw in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England on Sunday, largely thanks to the lower-middle order's resistance. Trailing by a massive 311 runs after England posted 669 in their first innings, India fought back on the strength of three centuries and a near-century. Spin allrounder Washington Sundar was at the heart of the comeback, scoring an unbeaten 101*, while Ravindra Jadeja (107*), Shubman Gill (103), and KL Rahul (90) also played crucial roles. The draw kept India alive in the five-match series, though they still trail 1-2 heading into the decider. M Sundar Blasts Selectors For Inconsistent Opportunities While Washington's performance won him plaudits from fans and experts, it also reignited a long-standing grievance from his father, M Sundar. In a scathing interview to the TOI, the senior Sundar criticized the national selectors for not giving his son a consistent run in the Indian team despite his impressive performances. 'Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances,' said M Sundar. 'Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn't get them. Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the second innings of the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances.' 'He Gets Dropped Even After One Bad Match' Sundar's father expressed his frustration over what he called an unfair approach. He recalled how his son had scored valuable runs in tough conditions against England in 2021 85* in Chennai and 96* in Ahmedabad but was still not assured a place in the XI. 'He would have been dropped even if those two knocks had ended up in centuries. Has this kind of an approach been maintained for any other Indian cricketer?' he asked. Recalling The Nidahas Trophy And IPL Setbacks M Sundar also mentioned Washington's breakout performance during the 2018 Nidahas Trophy in Sri Lanka, where he finished as the highest wicket-taker with eight wickets and impressed with his economy rate. However, the momentum didn't carry into his IPL career. 'In the very next IPL season, RCB benched him for 11 straight matches despite good performances. Can you imagine his mentality?' said M Sundar. He also highlighted how his son made an impact with a quickfire 40 off 14 balls for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022, only to be pushed down the order in the following match. 'Even Gujarat Titans Don't Back Him' According to M Sundar, the trend of underutilization continued with his current IPL team, Gujarat Titans (GT). 'Even his current team don't give him regular chances. He showcased his calibre in the IPL 2025 Eliminator against Mumbai Indians, smashing 48 off 24 balls,' he said. He also pointed out how players like Yashasvi Jaiswal have been given long ropes by their franchises, but Washington hasn't enjoyed similar trust not even in domestic cricket. Despite limited opportunities, Washington Sundar has continued to prove his value. With his 101* in a pressure situation against a dominant England side, he has once again thrown his hat into the ring for a regular place in India's Test middle order.

'Indian Chess Is Just Unbelievable': Legend Lauds Divya Deshmukh After World Cup Win

Last Updated: Judit Polgar has praised Indian teenager Divya Deshmukh for winning the 2025 Women's Chess World Cup, beating Koneru Humpy. Hungarian chess Grandmaster and one of the best women's players of all time, Judit Polgar, on Monday, lauded Indian teenager Divya Deshmukh, who got the better of compatriot and the country's No. 1 women's chess player Koneru Humpy to win the third edition of the World Cup. The win against Humpy not just earned Divya the prestigious title, but made her a Grandmaster as well, something which looked improbable when she began the event. The win against Humpy for Divya came after the two classical matches played on Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27 ended in draws. 'Congrats to @DivyaDeshmukh05, who has clinched the 2025 Women's Chess World Cup title, defeating her compatriot Koneru Humpy in a tense tiebreak. Indian chess is just unbelievable! But do not forget: it has reasons.😉#ChessConnectsUs #India," Polgar tweeted on Monday evening. After the drawn matches, it was the first set of tiebreakers that proved decisive as Humpy lost the battle of nerves. Except for the World Cup and the Women's World Championship, Humpy has won everything under the sun, but, as fate would have it, the World Cup title eluded her again. Deshmukh showcased resolve on Monday and the bonus for the determination was the Grandmaster title, reserved for the champion of this tournament. Deshmukh is now the fourth Indian woman player to achieve the Grandmaster feat after Humpy, Dronavalli Harika and R Vaishali. Humpy, now 38, earned her Grandmaster title back in 2002, three years before Divya was even born in 2005. The latter has since become India's 88th Grandmaster and if she maintains her determination, there is no doubt she can scale even greater heights. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
