General body sanctions 90 posts, including 80 senior residents for PGI
Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda chaired the meeting, attended by PGI general body members and guests.
PGIMER Deputy Director Pankaj Rai said all agendas of the general body meeting were referred to the Institute Body, which gives a final nod to crucial matters related to infrastructure, equipment, patient care and services, recruitments, etc., for the institute. 'We are very happy that all 29 agendas received a nod.'
'During the session, the union health minister emphasised the importance of shaping PGI's future through the preparation of a comprehensive 'Vision 2047' document,' he said. 'This strategic plan aims to position PGI as a global leader in medical education, research and healthcare over the next two decades. The institute was entrusted with developing strategies to enhance its academic programs, infrastructure, and community outreach efforts,' he said.
Rai said the long-standing demand for a dedicated Technical Cadre at the PGI was approved, too.
The implementation of a six-tier cadre structure is expected to streamline technical support, improve operational efficiency, and enhance overall institute functioning. 'This has been long-standing since about 2003, and more than 700 employees will benefit from it, and we received complete support for the Institute's mission of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare,' said Rai.
To strengthen the Satellite Centre in Ferozepur, 637 positions were approved, comprising 111 faculty and 526 non-faculty staff to ensure the Centre's full operational readiness and help alleviate the patient load at PGI, he said.
Nadda commended PGI's exemplary service during 'Op Sindoor,' highlighting the institute's commitment to the nation. He praised the swift response by the PGI in sending five ambulances stocked with medical supplies and 218 units of blood.
He lauded the PGI for dispatching its multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nursing officers, and ambulance drivers from various parts of India, exemplifying unity and a spirit of national service.
'We have to prepare and submit a detailed project report (DPR) for the Sarangpur Project, which envisions the development of a 100-bedded medical college, an Advanced Cancer Institute, a Trauma Centre, and outpatient departments (OPD). The initiative seeks to substantially expand PGI's healthcare and training capacities in the region,' Rai said.
The Sangrur Centre has an OPD, accommodating more than 700 patients daily, with many surgeries also done here, and the waiting time for surgeries is almost negligible, he said.

Ashakirana Kendras to offer free cataract surgeries
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister and Bangalore Urban Development Minister DK Shivakumar and Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao inaugurated the "Ashakirana Drishti Kendra" at Dr Balagangadharanath Swamiji Multi-Speciality Hospital in Govindarajanagar M C Layout on Thursday. This was in collaboration with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), National Health Mission, National Blindness and Visual Impairment Control Programme and Sight Saver Swayamsevak Sanstha. With 11 such centres spread across BBMP, the municipality aims to offer free cataract surgeries and spectacles to the poor and needy free of cost. "Among the 11 Ashakirana Drishti Kendras, five centres will be provided with human resources, surgical equipment and spectacle distribution services under CSR initiatives," said Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer (CHO), BBMP. He added these centres are part of a total of 393 designated Ashakirana Vision Centres operating in Karnataka. The CHO also added that the facility will be available at JJR Nagar Public Hospital, Halasuru Maternity Hospital, H Siddaiah Road Maternity Hospital, Hosahalli Maternity Hospital, R C Pura Maternity Hospital, Banashankari Maternity Hospital, Gauri Palya Maternity Hospital, Rampur Hospital, Indiranagar Public Hospital, Jayanagar Public Hospital and KC General Hospital, Malleswaram. WHO to document Karnataka's 'Asha Kirana' as global eye care model
The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed interest in Karnataka's 'Asha Kirana' initiative, which provides doorstep eye care, and plans to share its success story with other countries and regions. The WHO has proposed a comprehensive assessment of the initiative to further strengthen the programme and generate valuable insights and best practices for other regions aiming to implement integrated, people-centred eye care. In a letter to Harsh Gupta, Principal Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, WHO Representative to India, Dr Roderico H Ofrin, appreciated the state government for conceptualising and effectively implementing the 'Asha Kirana' initiative. "This innovative model, launched under your leadership, marks significant progress towards eliminating avoidable blindness and ensuring equitable access to comprehensive eye care across the state. We are particularly encouraged by how 'Asha Kirana' aligns with the WHO's Integrated People-Centred Eye Care (IPEC) framework," Ofrin wrote in the letter dated June 30. Recognising its impact and scalability, the WHO expressed keen interest in systematically documenting the state's model. Such an evaluation, Ofrin noted, will help strengthen the programme while providing lessons and best practices for other regions and countries.
