Channel Islands athletes meet Princess Anne as Island Games opens

BBC News13-07-2025
Channel Island athletes have described meeting Princess Anne at the opening ceremony of the 20th Island Games as a "once in a lifetime" experience. The Princess Royal greeted competitors from 24 different island communities as they prepared for the week-long event as she officially opened the games in Orkney on Saturday. She also attended the opening ceremony hosted by Lorraine Kelly, where flag-bearers led their teams in a parade into the town centre.Alderney runner Benjamin Mutua and his coach Julie Longden spoke to Anne about their trip to Orkney and their involvement in the games.
Mutua is competing in his first Island Games having only lived in Alderney for a couple years after moving to the island from Kenya.Ms Longden said the encounter was "amazing"."I have met royalty before but because of her love of sport it was so good to talk to her," she said.
After hosting the opening ceremony, Kelly said she was honoured to have been asked and that felt like an adopted Orcadian. She said she felt "very emotional" at the ceremony because she was so fond of the Orkney islands and was so proud of the way the event had been organised. As well as Orkney, she said she would be cheering on Sark in the games as the competition's smallest team."You know, I don't know that the others [Channel Islands] need me, I think because they're so good," she said."Beautiful Sark, amazing and fantastic, I love there's only two of them, and they made more noise than anyone else, it's just great so I'm rooting for them."
Spectators Lucy and Nick Le Boutillier travelled from Jersey to the opening ceremony to support their daughter Tilly, who is competing in the gymnastics.Flying to Glasgow and driving a motorhome the rest of the way to Orkney, they said they had been planning their trip ever since she made the squad.Mrs Le Boutillier said: "We're her biggest supporters so we're standing firmly on the sidelines to cheer on team Jersey and Tilly."She said the weather had been glorious and the opening ceremony was great.Mr Le Boutillier said: "We were in the queue for two and a half hours trying to get in, because I think they were only letting around 3,000 people in, so we wanted to make sure we got a spot."
Doreen Manson performed at the opening ceremony with her exercise group to promote fitness for older people. She has lived in Orkney her whole life and said the games had brought a great buzz to the place."It's just something that we've never seen before, and all the different athletes coming in from different countries, it's just great, I think, really exciting," she said.

Anthony Joshua drops hint over new venture with Eddie Hearn after praising his promoter's family for 'conquering' sport

Anthony Joshua has hinted at a future career in football agency, teasing a joint venture with his boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, whose family he credits with 'conquering' a range of sports. The former two-time heavyweight champion has not been in the boxing ring since he was knocked out by Daniel Dubois, back in September. The 35-year-old had elbow surgery in May and is looking to make a return to the ring at some stage later this year. Even if a blockbuster bout materalises this term or at the start of the next, Joshua is in the twilight of a glittering career and he is already looking ahead to what comes next. On Thursday, he took to social media to tease a future in the football agency industry alongside his long-time promoter Hearn. '[Eddie Hearn] the family has conquered darts, snooker, pool, boxing, fishing, golf, owning a football club & you've had a presence in basketball, netball & gymnastics,' he wrote on Instagram. 'I believe 'we' could look at the football agency industry and have a strong presence. Imagine we help manage the player who helped England win the World Cup. 'Call me tomorrow mate.' Joshua's call to action comes five years after Hearn first floated the idea of him and British boxer teaming up to make a splash in the football agent business. When asked if he'd ever consider getting into the business, Hearn told British GQ in 2020: 'That's a remarkable question because I was having a conversation about that four hours ago. 'Do you know what? I'll just say it. Me and AJ are talking about doing it. 'We've looked at it for a while and he mentioned it to me the other day and he said: "You know how to represent athletes, you can use my brand and my name, I know a lot of the players, we go out. 'You know how to build a career on the pitch and off the pitch commercially, so what do you think?" 'It may not happen, but we're looking at it. Could be fun.' Hearn has some experience in the sport, having worked with his father Barry, who was the chairman of Leyton Orient for 19 years between 1995 and 2014. Last month, former unified heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis questioned whether Joshua still wants to continue fighting following his absence from the build up to Oleksandr Usyk's knockout win over Daniel Dubois. 'I think it's a missed opportunity, Joshua not being at ringside,' Lewis told Mail Sport. 'He should show up if he wants to fight and he feels he's still got it.'

The deepening crisis at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday players refused to feature in a friendly match against Burnley after not receiving their July wages on time. The boycott occurred just hours after Henrik Pedersen was appointed as the club's new head coach, following Danny Rohl's departure. This marks the fourth instance in the last five months that the Championship club has delayed salary payments to its players and staff. Sheffield Wednesday is currently under an English Football League embargo for unpaid transfer fees and has a history of financial breaches and penalties dating back to 2017. Owner Dejphon Chansiri is under increasing pressure to sell the club, with growing concerns within the EFL about its financial stability and ability to fulfil upcoming fixtures.

Australia vs British & Irish Lions prediction: 3rd Test betting tips & best bets

The British & Irish Lions can complete a first series whitewash in nearly a century when they face Australia in the third and final Test in Sydney on Saturday (11am, Sky Sports Main Event). Andy Farrell's side lead the series 2-0, part of an eight-game winning streak they've enjoyed since arriving down under. Last weekend's 29-26 win in Melbourne ended a 12-year wait for a Test series win, which also came against the Wallabies when Warren Gatland's side won the series in Australia 2-1. If the tourists can win again this weekend, they would become the first Lions side since 1927 in Argentina to record a whitewash and the first since the legendary 1974 team to finish a tour unbeaten. For Australia, though, pride is at stake, and they will be doing their best to spoil the party. Betting sites don't give them much hope of achieving that goal, making them sizable underdogs for the final Test in Sydney, with the Lions favoured by eight points on the handicap. Australia vs British & Irish Lions Betting Preview: Lions to complete the whitewash Farrell has made two changes for the third Test with Blair Kinghorn and James Ryan coming in to replace James Lowe on the left wing and Ollie Chessum at lock. Ryan is one of nine Irish players in the starting line-up, and consistency has been the key with 11 players set to start all three Tests. Rob Valetini misses out for Australia, who have made four changes from the side that were beaten last weekend. The flanker, who missed the first match, is managing a calf problem and played just the first half in Melbourne. He was excellent when on the field, and the Wallabies will miss his experience and contribution. He will be replaced by Tom Hooper, while forward Taniela Tupou makes his first international appearance of the year, coming in for the injured Allan Alaalatoa at tighthead prop. Nic White will make his 73rd and final appearance for his country after announcing his retirement from international rugby after this Test, and Dylan Pietsch replaces Harry Potter on the left wing. The latest Lions tour odds massively favour the Lions and there's a sense that Australia may have delivered their best shot in Melbourne last week, but still come up short. If the Lions have the right mentality, they should secure a 3-0 series success. However, the competitive nature of the series means the margin of victory could be relatively small. Sheehan to complete the hat-trick We've backed Dan Sheehan to score a try in each of the two previous tests, and it's come off, so why not go for him again? He scored the final try in the 27-19 win in the first Test and the first try in last week's 29-26 win in Melbourne, demonstrating why he was among the favourites on rugby betting sites to be the Lions' top scorer in the series. The Lions pack has been dominant for large swathes of the Test series and should provide Sheehan with opportunities to add to his try tally.
