Visakhapatnam: In a landmark step toward transforming India's built environment into inclusive and accessible spaces for all, Andhra Pradesh MedTech Zone (AMTZ) is hosting a high-level national consultation to develop the country's first purple building certification scheme — a dedicated accessibility rating system for buildings.
On June 11–12, more than 50 leading national experts in accessibility, disability rights, architecture, and urban planning with get together at the AMTZ campus in Visakhapatnam to deliberate and finalise the framework. The certification is aimed at ensuring that public and private buildings across India are designed and operated in ways that are truly accessible for persons with disabilities, senior citizens, pregnant women, and all users with mobility and sensory needs.
The purple building certification scheme is being designed as a structured, scalable tool that will assess buildings based on universal design principles. It will include detailed checklists, tiered ratings (basic to excellence), and measurable benchmarks covering entrances, ramps, signage, washrooms, elevators, pathways, and digital accessibility.
"Accessibility should not be seen as an exception, but as the foundation of every building in a truly inclusive nation.

It may be noted that in the two-day meeting, three expert committees come together to build a national standard for accessibility. Once adopted, purple certification will serve as a voluntary yet widely recognised benchmark for schools, hospitals, shopping complexes, corporate offices, and even housing societies. AMTZ's role goes beyond certification. It is already a national partner in the ongoing Sugamya Delhi Abhiyan, which is a people-led campaign spearheaded by Inclusive Divyangjan Entrepreneurs Association (IDEA) and now supported by Delhi govt.
The scheme is envisioned as a core tool within that campaign to institutionalise accessibility across public spaces.

The Centre on Tuesday notified the scheme for the Prime Minister 's awards for Excellence in Public Administration 2025, a Personnel Ministry statement said. A web portal for registration and submission of nominations on the PM's awards will be formally launched from October 2 and nominations can be submitted thereafter, it added. For 2025, the scheme for Prime Minister's awards aims to recognise the contribution of civil servants under three categories. Category I is for holistic development of districts under 11 priority sector programmes. Under this category, five awards would be conferred, the statement said. Category II is for aspirational blocks programme and under this, five awards would be conferred, it said. In category III meant for innovations for central ministries/departments, states and districts, six awards would be conferred. The period of consideration is April 1 2022 to September 30, 2025 for the category I (holistic development of districts) and April 1, 2023 to September 30, 2025 for category II (aspirational blocks programme) and category III (innovations), according to the statement. The evaluation process would include Short-listing of districts/organisations by screening committee (first and second stage), evaluation by expert committee and empowered committee, it said. Prime Minister's approval will be taken on the recommendations of the empowered committee for the awards, the statement said. The PM's awards, 2025 will consist of a trophy, scroll and an incentive of Rs 20 lakh to the awarded district/organisation to be utilised for implementation of project/programme or bridging resources gaps in any area of public welfare, it added.

MSMEs new engine of credit growth for banks, outpace retail loans
MSMEs are emerging as the leading engine of credit growth for banks, overtaking retail lending. During FY 2024–25, MSME loans surged by 14.1%, compared to 11.7% growth in retail and 11.2% in services, RBI data showed. Share of MSME credit in total bank credit stood at 17.7%, an all-time high. Loans to this segment stood at more than Rs 14.3 lakh crore at the end of May 2025. 'Despite a broad deceleration in bank credit growth, the share of credit to the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector in total non-food bank credit has been growing steadily and its growth has outpaced that in other sectors during 2024-25,' RBI noted in the financial stability report. The proportion of subprime borrowers in banks' MSME portfolios declined significantly, from 33.5 % in June 2022 to just 23.3 % by March 2025. Asset quality also showed improvement with the gross NPA ratio of MSME portfolio of banks falling from 4.5% in March 2024 to 3.6% at the end-March 2025. Live Events This is also reflected in the significant moderation in SMA-2 (loans due beyond 60-90 days) ratio, an indicator of incipient stress which fell to 0.8% of total MSME loans. The government's credit guarantee schemes improved flow of credit to the MSME sector, especially vulnerable enterprises, with approximately Rs 6.28 lakh crore guaranteed under two flagship schemes, the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units (CGFMU) and the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS). The NPA ratio in both schemes was relatively higher versus the sector wide ratios, as these loans are directed towards risky borrowers. Under CGFMU, the NPA ratio for the banking system stood at 10.8% while it was 5.6% under the ECLGS.

Cabinet nod to 4-Lane Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram road project in Tamil Nadu
The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the construction of four-lane Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram Section of NH-87 in Tamil Nadu at a cost of Rs 1,853 crore. The project will be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM) at a capital cost of Rs 1,853 crore, I&B Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said while briefing on the decisions taken at the Cabinet meeting. This will decongest the existing corridor, improve safety, and cater to the mobility needs of rapidly growing towns such as Paramakudi, Sathirakudi, Achundanvayal and Ramanathapuram. Live Events Upon completion, the Paramakudi-Ramanathapuram section will play a pivotal role in regional economic growth , strengthening connectivity between major religious and economic centres, boosting tourism to Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi, and opening new avenues for trade and industrial development. The project will also generate approximately 8.4 lakh person-days of direct and 10.45 lakh person-days of indirect employment, and will open new avenues of growth, development and prosperity in surrounding regions, the release said.
