Power cut cancels Wicklow school classes but Curiosity Cube saves day

Students who were destined for a day of learning at home were able to become scientists for the day at the Curiosity Cube, which is designed to make science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) accessible.
The retrofitted shipping container came to Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir for the fourth year as part of a Europe-wide tour.
The Life Sciences Volunteer team from Merck – the science and technology company driving the Curiosity Cube – reached out to the local community through WhatsApp and social media and invited other local schools, students, families and friends to work alongside Merck employees from Sigma-Aldrich Ltd, the primary centre for cGMP production of commercial and late-stage APIs and advanced intermediates.
In total, 130 children from Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir, their families and other local primary schools enjoyed an interactive day at the Curiosity Cube.
Throughout the visit, students from Gaelscoil an Inbhir Mhóir and other local schools explored real-world science through three interactive experiments focused on the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI): image authenticity, pattern recognition and self-driving cars.
These hands-on activities were designed to show students how STEM is all around them and to equip them with critical thinking skills needed for future careers.
Site administrator for Merck's Sigma-Aldrich Ltd in Arklow, Sharon Kennedy, said: 'We love to have the Curiosity Cube back in Arklow every year, it means an awful lot to our local community and our colleagues that we are here every year visiting the schools.
'For four years and counting, the visit of the mobile science lab has always been making a big difference to not only us on site but also the students and the community in Arklow in general.'
Despite the growing demand for STEM professionals, many students struggle to see themselves in these careers. A recent survey funded by Merck found that nearly half (48pc) of middle school students find it difficult to envision themselves as scientists, despite engaging in STEM-related activities every day.
In 2024, the Curiosity Cube engaged more than 43,000 students across Europe and North America, visiting 14 countries and hosting 282 events.

This year, the Curiosity Cube embarked on its fourth European tour, aiming to connect with 20,000 students via more than 130 events. Each stop on its tour is supported by employee volunteers who share their passion for science, providing students with real-world insights into STEM careers.
'Every student who walks into the Curiosity Cube walks away with a new way of looking at science,' Curiosity Cube coordinator Stefanie Rammer said.
'That spark of curiosity can make all the difference in shaping the scientists of tomorrow.'

Carbon capture technology takes off at Dublin Airport

Groundbreaking technology that captures the global-warming gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere is being put through its paces at Dublin Airport. The team behind the technology is hoping to demonstrate its wider potential for capturing carbon in aviation and when e-fuels are generated. Developed by Prof Wolfgang Schmitt and Dr Sebastien Vaesen from Trinity's School of Chemistry and the Research Ireland Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research (Amber), it focuses on delivering energy-efficient solutions to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide to help reduce industrial emissions of the greenhouse gas. This involves what is known as direct air capture, which is literally sucking carbon dioxide out of the air. Scientists believe such is the level of this greenhouse gas in the atmosphere due to human activities, especially, burning of fossil fuels, capturing carbon will need to be widely deployed. READ MORE The problem up to now is that the technology is expensive and has yet to prove efficient in removing large volumes of carbon dioxide – such as what would be emitted in heavy industry or at major airports. Despite this, leading climate scientists believe capturing carbon will be a critical tool in achieving net-zero emissions, with potential to drive real, measurable change in combatting climate change. This deployment moves the technology out of the lab, marking the first industrial-scale field test of the technology in Ireland. The demonstrator has been operating for three months at the airport, collecting critical data on efficiency, operational stability and energy consumption. This will provide crucial validation of technology performance and shape future development and commercial applications, said Prof Schmitt. The Airin Motion project has been funded by the European Innovation Council and supported by Enterprise Ireland. 'Atmospheric carbon capture innovations are crucial because they directly address one of the most pressing challenges we face today – reducing carbon emissions from industries that can't easily eliminate them at the source,' he added. 'By advancing and integrating this technology across industries, we are not only reducing emissions but also creating economic opportunities through supplying high-purity CO₂ that align with global sustainability goals.' This technology has the potential to be a cornerstone in global efforts to combat climate change, he said. Captured carbon can in theory be repurposed, with possible options including its use in carbonated drinks. 'Our technology is designed for industrial deployment, efficiently capturing carbon dioxide from the air while utilising low-grade waste heat from industries,' said the technical lead on the project, Dr Vaesen saod. 'Deployment at Dublin Airport is a key validation for scaling up and allows us to gather critical performance data in a live operational setting and fine-tune it for long-term sustainable operation,' he said. Their 'test rig' installed at the airport has novel design features, he added, which make it very efficient at removing the carbon dioxide. It was developed in response to the European Commission's ReFuelEU aviation legislation, which requires sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) comprise 2 per cent of fuel at EU airports by 2025, increasing to 70 per cent by 2050. Furthermore, it also requires e-fuels – which are produced from renewable electricity and sustainable carbon dioxide – constitute 50 per cent of SAF. Andrea Carroll, director of sustainability at Dublin Airport Authority (DAA), the operators of airport, said the project offered 'an opportunity to explore carbon capture as a potential means of decarbonising our operations and industry'. Researcher Dr Elham Katoueizadeh said their technology was developed over more than a decade and was ready to be implemented across industries.

Contagious animal disease detected in France for first time

An outbreak of contagious lumpy skin disease (LSD) has been confirmed for the first time in France yesterday, June 29, 2025. This strictly animal disease only affects cattle, zebus, and buffalo. Other animal species, such as sheep and goats, are not affected. LSD is not transmissible to humans, either through contact with infected cattle, through food, or through insect bites. There is also no risk to human health from the consumption of products derived from these animals, according to the French Ministry of Agriculture. Risk in France However, this animal disease is highly detrimental to the health of cattle and leads to significant production losses. It is transmitted between animals through the bite of insects such as stomoxys or horseflies (flies). It is particularly present in North Africa and, since June 2022, in Italy, where authorities have confirmed this disease, also for the first time, in Sardinia and then in Lombardy. The affected cattle farm in France is located in Savoie. The cattle showed suggestive clinical signs (fever and skin nodules). On June 29, the national reference laboratory confirmed the infection with the LSD virus. As a result and in accordance with European law which requires the eradication of this disease, by prefectural decree declaring the infection, the outbreak will be depopulated in order to prevent this disease from taking hold and spreading. A regulated zone with a radius of 50km around this outbreak establishes preventive measures by strengthening veterinary surveillance, as well as restrictions in particular on the movement of cattle aimed at preventing the disease from spreading to other farms. The prefectures of the departments of Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Ain, and Isere are affected by the 50km restriction perimeter around the outbreak. Investigations will be conducted to identify the source of the infection, the ministry added. Lumpy skin disease Lumpy skin disease is a contagious viral disease characterised by nodules on the skin of cattle and water buffalo. The disease can cause reduced milk yield, severe emaciation, complications secondary to the skin lesions, permanent damage to hides, and long-term illness. The main mode of transmission of the lumpy skin disease virus is through biting insects feeding on skin lesions of infected animals and subsequently spreading the virus to immunologically naive animals. Many types of insects can transmit the virus to animals, such as mosquitoes, biting flies and ticks. Insects that spread infection between animals are most active between April and November in Ireland and are commonly found on farms. The virus may also be spread through use of contaminated needles or farm equipment. Spread through direct contact with an infected animal is considered unlikely. Infected bulls can excrete the virus in semen, however transmission of the virus via infected semen has not been demonstrated. Ireland has never reported lumpy skin disease. An outbreak here could have a severe negative impact on animal welfare and the livestock sector, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). Outbreaks can result in substantial economic losses and movement or trade bans. The disease does not affect humans. Lumpy skin disease is a notifiable disease, which means that any suspected case must be reported to the DAFM without delay.

With the global space economy projected to exceed €1.8 trillion by 2035, there are vast opportunities for businesses in telecoms, tech, advanced materials and more. More than 250 delegates from the optical and quantum communications sectors – around 20pc of them from Ireland – gathered in Dublin at the European Space Agency's 8th ScyLight Conference. They came from industry, academia, space agencies, governments and other stakeholders across Europe, Canada, Japan, the US and Australia to discuss how to build secure, high-capacity, space-based connectivity. Just as fibre optics are replacing copper cables on Earth, space communications are transitioning from traditional radio waves to high-capacity laser-based systems – an area where Ireland is building real strength. The conference offered Irish companies such as mBryonics, Pilot Photonics – recent winner of the Innovation Challenge Prize at the 2025 Paris Space Week – and Eblana Photonics, an international platform to raise their profile and build new partnerships. Likewise, research-performing organisations such as the Walton Institute (Southeast Technological University), the Tyndall Institute (UCC) and DCU also got to share their work, with speakers from each addressing the conference. One of the organisers was Deirdre Kilbane, who leads IrelandQCI, the Irish arm of EuroQCI, the EU-wide quantum communications infrastructure programme. Quantum technology is used to increase communications security. Attendees were welcomed by Declan Hughes, the Secretary-General of the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment and Marina Donohoe, Head of Research, Innovation and Infrastructure at Enterprise Ireland. IDA clients also attended Scylight, including Viasat, a satellite network operator with offices in Ireland, and Altera, which spun out of Intel earlier this year. While Ireland might not always be perceived as a space pioneer, 2025 marks 50 years since Ireland became a founding member of the European Space Agency. Most of the companies engaging with ESA are spinouts from third-level funded research Numerous Irish businesses are making a significant contribution to the global space industry across areas such as satellite communications, navigation systems and Earth Observation. Recent growth in the sector in Ireland can be credited at least in part to the 2019 National Space Strategy for Enterprise. Since its launch, the number of Irish companies engaging with ESA has grown to 116 from 25 in 2014. ADVERTISEMENT Many of these companies, including all three mentioned above, are spinouts from third-level funded research. Most if not all have also benefited from Enterprise Ireland and Research Ireland (formerly Science Foundation Ireland) funding and support. Through the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund, for example, we have helped to launch and scale several space-focused projects, including FreeForm Optix, The National Space Subsystems and Payloads Initiative, and CAMEO, which is advancing Ireland's capabilities in Earth Observation. Ireland's growing space ecosystem also supports broader policy goals – from enhancing digital sovereignty to enabling secure communications and contributing to Europe's technological leadership.
