Vision Marine Technologies Files Patent for Advanced Software-Based Overload Protection in Electric Marine Powertrains
Vision Marine Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:VMAR) ("Vision Marine" or the "Company"), a company specializing in electric marine propulsion systems, announced today it filed a new U.S. patent application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for software-driven overload protection of cooling-pump motors integrated within the Company's proprietary E-Motion™ high-voltage ("HV") powertrain.
The patent introduces smart software within the Company's E-Motion™ HV Electric Marine Powertrain that continuously monitors electrical conditions of the cooling-pump motor. Similar to a home's digital circuit breaker, this system instantly disconnects power when an overload is detected, eliminating the need for traditional hardware fuses. This patent application's approach not only safeguards critical components but also significantly reduces system weight, saves valuable installation space, and simplifies wiring for boat manufacturers, who can easily integrate this advanced protection into their existing designs, whether for single or dual motor setups.
Additionally, the patent pending software-driven system provides considerable operational benefits through continuous digital monitoring and data collection. By capturing detailed performance data, operators receive clear, practical insights that enable proactive maintenance scheduling, significantly reducing downtime and operational disruptions. The digital nature of this proposed solution further allows for remote, over-the-air updates, ensuring vessels continuously receive the latest safety enhancements and regulatory compliance without the need for physical servicing.
"Intelligent thermal management is fundamental to reliable high-power electrification at sea," said Xavier Montagne, Chief Technology Officer at Vision Marine. "By moving overload protection into software, we introduce a superior layer of resilience, significantly reduce hardware complexity for original equipment manufacturers, and help boaters enjoy more time on the water with less maintenance."
This patent application filing further expands Vision Marine's robust intellectual property portfolio and supports the Company's strategic initiative to deliver industrialized, safe, and user-centric electric propulsion solutions to global boat manufacturers and rental fleets. Additionally, this innovation reinforces Vision Marine's direct-to-consumer strategy, building on production agreements with multiple recreational boat manufacturers to bring integrated electric boats-such as the V30 and V24-to market, thereby strengthening the Company's position and demonstrating product readiness.

J.B. Hunt still waiting for market to turn
J.B. Hunt Transport Services remains focused on improving its freight profile and removing costs as it awaits a positive inflection in demand. The Lowell, Arkansas-based company reported earnings per share of $1.31 for the second quarter, which was largely in line with analysts' expectations and flat year over year. Consolidated revenue of $2.93 billion was also flat y/y and in line with the consensus estimate. Operating income slid 4% to $197 million but margins have largely stabilized across its various business units. The multimodal transportation provider has identified $100M in cost takeouts, which include a variety of efficiency and asset utilization improvement initiatives. Some of the reductions will be realized this year with the bulk occurring next year. J.B. Hunt's (NASDAQ: JBHT) intermodal revenue increased 2% y/y to $1.44 billion as loads increased 6% and revenue per load fell 3%. A 15% jump in loads originating in the East weighed on the yield metric given a shorter length of haul. Transcontinental loads were down 1% in the quarter. By month, loads were up 11% y/y in April, 3% in May and 4% in June. By comparison, total intermodal traffic on the U.S. Class I railroads was up 2% y/y (container-only traffic was up 3%) during the quarter, according to the Association of American Railroads. The choppiness in load trends during the quarter was largely due to changing customer behaviors in reaction to the trade war. Some of J.B. Hunt's customers have pulled freight shipments forward while others have not. Other customers have changed where they source their goods, away from countries that are likely to see punitive tariffs from the U.S. The changes in customer demand pushed J.B. Hunt to pull forward its peak season surcharge programs this year. During the recent intermodal bid season, the company captured positive rate increases for the first time in two years. However, positive pricing in head haul lanes, was partially offset by pricing weakness in back haul lanes. While management was hopeful for bigger rate increases, it said the modest increases it received along with a reduction in its cost profile has allowed it to stabilize margins in the unit. The unit's operating ratio (inverse of operating margin) deteriorated 40 basis points y/y to 93.3%. The result was 30 bps better than the first quarter. Dedicated revenue dipped less than 1% y/y to $847 million as a 3% decline in average trucks in service was largely offset by a 3% increase in revenue per truck per week (up 5% excluding fuel surcharges). The company sold service on 275 trucks during the quarter, all of which was offset by customer attrition. It said planned account closures covering 85 trucks spilled into July, which positively impacted the period. The delays, however, could impact a prior expectation for y/y operating income growth in the unit this year. J.B. Hunt reiterated a longer-term goal for net growth of 800 to 1,000 units annually. It expects to return to net fleet growth in the back half of this year. The unit's OR was 30 bps worse y/y at 88.9%. The second quarter marked 10 straight operating losses for the brokerage unit. The segment booked a $3.6 million loss in the period, nearly $10 million better y/y but $1 million worse than the first quarter. Revenue declined 4% y/y to $260 million as a 9% decline in loads was partially offset by a 6% increase in revenue per load. May saw some market tightening due to an annual safety blitz known as Roadcheck. That led to compressed margins during the month as purchased transportation expenses increased around the event. However, margins improved in June as spot rates softened. Recent account awards in the unit carried low- to mid-single-digit rate increases. A portion of the consolidated cost reduction plan is tied to cost takeouts in the brokerage unit. Head count was down 21% y/y (nearly level with the first quarter at 560 employees). Loads per employee in the unit grew 15% y/y and gross profit per employee was up 27% y/y. Shares of JBHT were off 1.1% in after-hours trading on Tuesday following a 2.2% decline during the full-day session. Asia Pacific's Demand for IT and Business Services Slows in Q2, ISG Index™ Shows
SYDNEY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Asia Pacific's spending on IT and business services slowed in the second quarter as enterprises remained cautious in the face of uncertain macro conditions, according to the latest state-of-the-industry report from Information Services Group (ISG) (Nasdaq: III), a global AI-centered technology research and advisory firm. Macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty is taking a toll on the Asia Pacific market at the moment. The only bright spot right now is AI, which has companies investing in cloud services for the massive computing power needed to run AI at scale. The Asia Pacific ISG Index™, which measures commercial outsourcing contracts with annual contract value (ACV) of US $5 million or more, shows second-quarter ACV for the combined market (both cloud-based XaaS and managed services) was down slightly (0.3 percent) versus the prior year, to US $4.7 billion. Sequentially, the market fell 12 percent compared with the first quarter. It was the first time the Asia Pacific market pulled back since the second quarter last year. Fueled by interest in AI, demand for cloud-based services remained robust, up 16 percent year on year, to US $3.9 billion, even as demand slowed 15 percent from the first quarter. Managed services, meanwhile, slumped 40 percent, to US $823 million, but rose 6 percent against the first quarter. Within the XaaS segment, infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) ACV advanced 17 percent, at US $3.4 billion, while software-as-a-service (SaaS) ACV grew 13 percent, to US $500 million. In managed services, IT outsourcing (ITO) ACV fell 46 percent, to US $539 billion, with even the largest and fastest-growing service area, application development and management (ADM), down more than 30 percent. Business process outsourcing (BPO) also had a weak quarter, down 34 percent, to US $133 million, with only customer engagement and facilities management services showing growth. Engineering, research and development (ER&D) services didn't fare much better, down 15 percent, to US $152 million. During the quarter, 69 managed services contracts were awarded, down 18 percent year on year. Among industries, the region's largest industry for sourcing—banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI)—was up 1.4 percent. Travel, transportation and leisure and retail both generated double-digit growth off smaller bases. All other sectors were down by double digits. Geographically, South Korea was the only market that grew, albeit off a small base. Australia-New Zealand was down 33 percent, India was down 16 percent and Japan was down 35 percent. 'Macroeconomic and geopolitical uncertainty is really taking a toll on the Asia Pacific market at the moment. The only bright spot right now is AI, which has companies investing in cloud services to take advantage of the massive computing power needed to run AI at scale,' said Michael Gale, partner and regional leader, ISG Asia Pacific. 'Given the quarter-over-quarter improvement we saw in managed services, we hope to see a turnaround in the overall market during the second half.' First-Half Results Asia Pacific's combined market ACV in the first half rose 4.3 percent versus the prior year, to US $10.1 billion. All the growth can be attributed to the XaaS segment, which rose 17 percent, to US $8.5 billion. Within XaaS, IaaS was up 17 percent, to US $7.4 billion, while SaaS rose 16 percent, to US $1.0 billion. Managed services, meanwhile, declined 34 percent, to US $1.6 billion. All its component pieces were down double digits, including ITO, down 31 percent, to US $1.1 billion; BPO, down 33 percent, to US $288 million, and ER&D down 51 percent, to US $175 million. The 126 managed services contracts awarded in the first half were down 16 percent from the prior year. Among industries, the largest sector for outsourcing, BFSI, was down 16 percent, while the second largest, manufacturing, was off 19 percent. Among geographic markets, only India managed growth in the first half, up 2.4 percent. 2025 Global Forecast For the full year, ISG is maintaining its forecast of 1.3 percent revenue growth for managed services, reflecting a stabilizing tariff environment but also continued weakness in discretionary spending. At the same time, ISG is raising its previous growth forecast for cloud-based XaaS by 300 basis points, to 21 percent, based on continuing strong demand for AI-driven transformation.
