Why Do I Feel Movement in My Lower Abdomen?
Tugs and twists, pulls and plucks. Your belly can experience all kinds of sensations on a daily basis. Most are completely typical, but sometimes, an unusual movement or feeling may stand out.
Read on for more information about the more obvious causes, like pregnancy and digestion, the less common causes, and when that unusual movement may be a sign of something more concerning.
What might cause movement in your lower abdomen during pregnancy?
Pregnancy is a time of new experiences. One of those includes the commotion happening in your abdomen. As babies develop, their movements, however small, can be increasingly felt by the person carrying them.
Quickening is the term used to describe the flutters and sensations of movement that pregnant people experience. Most people will experience these first fetal movements between 16 and 25 weeks. This is during the second trimester.
By the third trimester, you should be feeling movement regularly. In subsequent pregnancies, you may be able to feel those movements earlier as your body knows what to expect, but the timelines for movement can be different for each person and each pregnancy.
What movements may mean if you're pregnant
If you feel movement while you're pregnant, your baby may be:
hiccupping
turning over
stretching limbs
flexing
kicking
When you might need to see a doctor
Movement in your abdomen while you're pregnant is expected and most likely typical. However, sometimes, other sensations in your abdomen can be signs of a potential problem.
If you notice any of the following signs and symptoms, don't wait for your next checkup — contact your doctor or healthcare professional right away:
severe diarrhea
dizziness or fainting
a fever higher than 100°F (37°C)
feeling pain or burning while urinating or having problems urinating
vaginal bleeding
unusual vaginal discharge, such as a gray or white discharge that smells foul
blurred vision or seeing spots in your eyes
cracked and bleeding nipples
swelling in your hands, face, or fingers
chronic, severe headaches
pain in your arms, chest, or legs

What might cause movement in your lower abdomen when you're not pregnant?
Pregnant people aren't the only ones who may experience unusual movements or sensations in the lower abdomen.
Common body functions like digestion can cause these feelings. Even gas or indigestion can be responsible. Understanding the likely cause for these movements can help you decide if they need to be treated or if they may warrant a trip to the doctor.
Digestion
When you eat, the muscles in your digestive tract start moving to bring food through your stomach and into your intestines. You may feel these muscles moving immediately after you eat or even a few hours later.
Indigestion
On the flip side of digestion is indigestion. Indigestion may cause:
heartburn
nausea
stomach pain
bloating
vomiting
Less commonly, you may experience a gnawing sensation in the stomach, which can feel like muscle movement.
Indigestion can be treated at home with over-the-counter antacids. But if you experience chronic indigestion or begin to experience severe vomiting, black stools, or unexplained weight loss, seek treatment from a healthcare professional.
Ovulation
During a menstrual cycle, you may experience a variety of sensations and feelings. Cramps at the start of a menstrual period may make muscles in your lower abdomen feel tighter. This may feel like movement.
During ovulation, you may also experience jumps or pops in your lower abdomen. This is usually caused by the ovary stretching to release the maturing egg. Often, this sensation is mild and temporary.
Muscle spasm
Just as you can have muscle spasms in your arms or legs, you can have muscle spasms in your abdomen. These involuntary contractions can be the result of muscle strain or overuse. But they can also be a sign of dehydration.
Most muscle spasms are mild and will pass on their own. If you continue to have them, or if they worsen and become severe, you should talk with your doctor. They may want to look for contributing factors for these muscle spasms.
Allergic reaction
A feeling of fluttering or twitching in your abdomen may be a sign that your digestive tract is experiencing an allergic reaction to something you ate. Although it's uncommon, these feelings can be related to celiac disease or an abnormal reaction to gluten.
Avoiding foods with gluten can help prevent these movements and any accompanying symptoms of celiac disease. These may include:
abdominal bloating or pain
persistent diarrhea
constipation
vomiting
weight loss
Intestinal obstruction
Digested food particles travel from your stomach through a long line of intestines and organs before they exit your body as stool. Sometimes, that digestive path can become blocked.
The blockage may be partial or total. When the blockage occurs, you may experience a variety of symptoms, including muscle cramps that can feel like movement.
Other symptoms of an intestinal obstruction include:
severe bloating
nausea
vomiting
constipation
inability to pass gas or stool
abdominal swelling
An intestinal obstruction should be diagnosed and treated by a doctor as quickly as possible. No home treatment can remove the obstruction.
Diverticulitis
Diverticulitis is a condition that affects the digestive tract. It causes uncomfortable symptoms like bloating and diarrhea. It can also cause pain and muscle cramps in your abdomen, which may feel like movement.
Without treatment, diverticulitis can lead to symptoms like:
nausea and vomiting
constant pain in the abdomen
bleeding from the rectum
If you have any of these symptoms, you should make an appointment to see your doctor.
Takeaway
Feeling movement in your abdomen isn't an unusual experience. If you're pregnant, jolts and jabs can be caused by a developing fetus. It can also be the result of typical digestion, muscle spasms, or ovulation.
Rare but more serious issues, like intestinal obstruction, aren't a common cause of movement in the abdomen, but the sensation may be a sign of it.
If the feeling of movement in your abdomen becomes chronic or you begin experiencing additional symptoms, make an appointment to see a doctor.

Marine veteran's brain returned by funeral home in an unmarked and leaking box, lawsuit claims
A couple is suing two funeral homes after their veteran son's brain was returned in an unmarked cardboard box that was leaking 'biohazardous liquid,' a lawsuit alleges. Lawrence and Abbey Butler are suing Nix & Nix Funeral Homes in Pennsylvania and Southern Cremations & Funeral in Georgia for the 'mishandling' of the remains of their son Timothy Garlington, a Marine veteran who died in November 2023. That month, the couple hired Southern Cremations & Funerals to transport their son's remains to Nix & Nix Funeral Home in Philadelphia. A week later, Lawrence Butler picked up a 'white, unmarked cardboard box' they thought contained his personal belongings, the filing states. The box began to smell and leak fluids in his car. When the couple tried to remove the box, 'biohazardous liquid spilled' onto them, the lawsuit alleges. They reached out to the funeral homes to learn that the box contained their late son's brain. "The family has been destroyed twice," their lawyer, L. Chris Stewart, told Fox 5. The couple says they suffered 'serious mental and emotional distress' as a result of the funeral homes' mishandling of their son's remains, the suit stated. It called the defendants' conduct 'extreme and outrageous.' They've accused the defendants of negligence and intentional infliction of emotional distress, among other claims, for an unspecified amount in damages. 'It was, and it is still, in my heart that I got in my car and I smelled death,' Lawrence Butler told the Associated Press. 'I had to get rid of that car,' he added. 'I just couldn't stand the idea that the remains were in that car.' Stewart told the AP that after speaking to several other funeral homes, he learned the brain is not typically 'separated from [the] body in that fashion and shipped in that fashion.' In the circumstances that the body parts are separated, they are labeled as a biohazard. 'There's no excuse, there is zero excuse for this type of error to happen. For the Georgia funeral home, Southern Cremations, to ship unmarked, bio-hazardous material. For the funeral home here in Philadelphia to hand the parents an unmarked box, not examined, not on a list of the inventory that was the personal items, to not check it,' Stewart told the AP. 'They have not received a single apology to this day from any funeral home.' The owner of Nix & Nix Funeral Homes said that his team didn't know that the box contained brain matter and noted that the state board did a thorough investigation and cleared them of wrongdoing. "Any body parts should be in the body. I don't understand why they would send his brains in a box, a regular box," Julian Nix, the owner of Nix and Nix Funeral Home, told Fox 5. "We immediately reported it to the state board and the medical examiner for inspection," Nix told the outlet. "When the state board investigated, they said that we did everything correct."

Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self released from hospital after undergoing heart procedure
Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self has been released from the hospital after undergoing a heart procedure earlier this week, the school's athletics department announced on Saturday. 'I want to thank all the amazing doctors and nurses at LMH Health for the excellent care I received during my stay there,' Self said in a statement. 'I feel strong and am excited to be home." "Our team has had a productive summer and look forward to our batteries being recharged and prepping for this upcoming season," he added. Self, 62, was transported to Kansas' Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Thursday after not feeling well and experiencing "concerning symptoms," according to the university. The statement said he was expected to be released from the hospital "soon," and Self was indeed discharged two days later. Two stents were inserted during the heart procedure for blocked arteries. It was the second time Self had undergone such a procedure, following 2023 when he missed the Big 12 and NCAA tournament to have two stents inserted and also received a catheterization. That followed an aortic valve replacement he underwent in 2022. Going into the 2023 NCAA tournament as defending national champion and a No. 1 seed, Kansas lost in the second round to No. 8 Arkansas. He returned to the team in early April and admitted some lifestyle changes were necessary after the health scare. "I think I have to wake up a little bit and maybe do some things from a lifestyle standpoint, a personal habit standpoint, that I've been very, very, very inconsistent with my entire adult life," Self told reporters then, via the Associated Press. "And I said that jokingly earlier, can you imagine a doctor telling you to lose weight, eat right and exercise?" he continued. "I've been told that a long time, but I'm taking that serious for the first time I probably have in my life.' The only other time Self missed games on the Jayhawks' sideline was earlier in the 2022-23 season when he served a four-game suspension for self-imposed penalties by Kansas resulting from an FBI investigation into a college basketball corruption scandal involving eight schools. Self is Kansas' all-time winningest coach with a 624-156 record that includes 16 Big 12 regular season championships, eight conference tournament titles, four NCAA tournament Final Four appearances and two national championships. The Jayhawks added five-star recruit Darryn Peterson, who Rivals ranked as the No. 3 player nationally and the No. 1 shooting guard in the 2025 class out of Prolific Prep in Napa, California. Kansas tips off the preseason with an exhibition at Louisville on Oct. 24. The Jayhawks open the regular season on Nov. 3 against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Smoke descends on Northeastern US. Map shows air quality impacts.
NEW YORK CITY − Wildfire smoke wafted from Canada to create unhealthy air quality levels across the Northeast on July 26. State officials from Maine to New York issued alerts for fine particulate matter, a toxic byproduct of wildfires that is small enough to be inhaled. Smoky conditions impacted cities including Boston and New York. Canada's fires could produce more smoke blowing into the Northeast through the afternoon, said Brooke Taber, a National Weather Service meteorologist stationed in Burlington, Vermont. Smoke is also causing limited visibility in some areas. Wind changes could provide a respite by the night, Taber said. Montreal had some of the worst air quality in the world due to fires in the Canadian Prairies, the Canadian Press reported, citing IQAir, a Swiss-based monitoring company. Several wildfires burning in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are sending large smoke plumes eastward, according to Quebec's fire provincial agency. Meanwhile, New York City climbed on IQAir's list of cities with unhealthy air levels. Hazy skies and the faint smell of smoke blanketed Manhattan on Saturday. Map shows US air quality Why air quality matters Officials urged people to stay indoors to reduce exposure, and to limit strenuous activity. Exposure can cause short-term effects such as irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, along with coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. It can be particularly dangerous for people in sensitive groups, such as children, older people and those with chronic health conditions, such as asthma or heart disease. Canada is experiencing another harsh wildfire season in a warming climate. Dozens of wildfires are blazing uncontrolled, according to Canada's natural resources department. In early July, Manitoba's government declared a state of emergency for its historic fires. July 17: Brace for more smoky skies as Canadian wildfires rage Eduardo Cuevas is based in New York City.
