Royal Mint unveil Royal Family coin worth £4,110 - it features one Princess
The very first official UK coin celebrating the Princess Royal has been revealed to mark Anne's 75th birthday and her 'remarkable lifetime of service'. The Royal Mint's commemorative £5 piece, dubbed its 'Anne-iversary coin', was personally approved by the Princess.
It showcases a portrait of the King's sister wearing her Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara, with her hair arranged in her signature bouffant. Surrounding the image is the tribute 'The Princess Royal – Celebrating 75 Years – Duty and Devotion', honouring Anne's unwavering Royal commitment across the decades.
Anne, often regarded as the hardest-working member of the Royal Family, turns 75 on August 15, but has so far insisted her milestone should only be publicly recognised through a charity forum she hosted at Buckingham Palace in June.
Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: "For the first time in British numismatic history, we are honoured to celebrate the Princess Royal on an official UK coin. Her Royal Highness's unwavering commitment to public service, charitable work, and support of His Majesty's armed forces over seven and a half decades makes her truly deserving of this tribute."
To the right of the portrait, Princess Anne's official coat of arms is depicted, while on the obverse, the King is shown, having given the final approval in honour of his sister. Thomas T Docherty, the coin's creator, said it reflected the Princess's 'strength of character' and 'understated elegance'.
The portrait of Anne's head is based on a photograph of the Princess taken by John Swannell, a Royal Photographic Society fellow, and shows her staring directly at the camera. Mr Docherty said: "I wanted to capture Her Royal Highness's remarkable legacy and dedication to public service.
"The portrait reflects her strength of character and unwavering commitment to duty.It was really by observing Princess Anne and looking at the role she plays within not only her family but the nation and the Commonwealth that formed inspiration for the design of the coin.
"She has, I would say, a kind of understated elegance and strength." Mr Docherty then continued: "Being Scottish, I admire the Princess Royal's dedication to Scottish organisations and communities, and I hope this coin serves as a fitting tribute."
The art deco diamond and aquamarine Cartier tiara Anne wears was a wedding anniversary gift from King George VI to his wife, Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother. She then passed it on as a wedding gift to her granddaughter Anne in 1973.
The Princess is also depicted wearing an aquamarine pendant and earrings, which are believed to have been made from the same tiara when Anne had it altered in the 1990s.
Princess Anne is the only daughter of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. She has survived a kidnapping attempt, competed in the Olympics and spent decades supporting her mother before becoming a vital part of the King's slimmed-down working monarchy.
In 2024, the Princess undertook nearly 400 official engagements – more than any other Royal Family member – despite being hospitalised for five nights in intensive care after a suspected horse-related incident.
The commemorative coin is available to purchase from the Royal Mint's website on July 18, costing £17.50 for the brilliant uncirculated edition. Other versions of the £5 coin are also available, with a silver proof priced at £110, a silver proof piedfort costing £208, and a gold proof for £4,110.
The coin is also being sold in three sets, each featuring either a single George VI threepence or florin or multiple George VI coins from 1950, the year the Princess was born. The prices range from £25 to £4,500.

ITV's crime thriller series Karen Pirie is returning to living rooms across the UK on Sunday night for a second season after three years away. The drama series follows detective sergeant Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle), who gets thrown into the investigation of an unsolved murder case 25 years on after the crime becomes the subject of a popular true crime podcast. Scottish investigator Karen is young and fearless and regularly shows that she isn't afraid to speak her mind if it gets her closer to discovering the truth. The first season was subtitled The Distant Echo and came in three parts during the autumn of 2022, while season two will be subtitled A Darker Domain. While The Distant Echo focused on the unsolved murder of a barmaid, A Darker Domain – also a three-parter – will focus on a kidnapping case from 1984. So, let's dig deeper… While its storylines don't seem all that far fetched compared to the crime stories we hear in the news every day, Karen Pirie is not actually based on a true story. The ITV drama was adapted for television by actress and screenwriter, Emer Kenny – who also stars in the three-part series as Karen's best friend and flatmate River. Writer Emer and lead star Lauren have previously spoken about the intense research that went into crafting the show and building the characters, even though they are fictional. 'It was really interesting when we were filming, we started at St Andrews Cathedral and one night we had police escorts with us,' said Lauren. 'One of them was a 20-something blonde woman, and it turns out she was a detective from Methil, the same tiny town Karen is from! To me, she was the real Karen Pirie. 'So we exchanged numbers and we stayed in touch, it was like looking into a mirror for Karen.' While the murder drama might be fictional, it is, in fact, based on a popular series of crime novels. The character of Karen Pirie was created by best-selling Scottish writer Val McDermid in her book The Distant Echo. But fans of the books shouldn't worry, as the producers of the drama had Val's full blessing to create a TV adaptation – the author herself was brought in to consult on the show's direction. EastEnders writer Emer has also promised that the series does end with a resolution to the murder case they are currently solving. Glastonbury stars to headline Milngavie Street Party 2025
Drum and bass duo Fabio and Grooverider, DJ Craig Charles, and Mercury Music Prize nominees Corto Alto will headline this year's Milngavie Street Party. The stars are set to perform at the two-day event taking place on August 29 and 30. "It's crazy to think that some of these guys were on the stage at Glastonbury just a few weeks ago." Other acts scheduled to perform at this year's festival include The View star Kyle Falconer, Belle and Sebastian's Chris Geddes, and The Beatles Dub Club. The event, now in its third year, will also host family-friendly activities, food and drink stalls, and a street parade. Billy said: "It's events like this which really help put Milngavie on the map. "The street party is a great reason to come into the town and discover more about what we have here. "Geographically, we're ideally placed for an event like this, bringing people here to visit and stay. "I don't think there will be another town of Milngavie's size anywhere else in Scotland putting on an event with such a superb line-up this summer." The Milngavie Street Party will be centred around Stewart Street Car Park, with performances at nearby Charlie's Loft and Fullbacks. Events on the Friday will take place from 4pm, while the party will start at 12pm on the Saturday. Karen Pirie is back and she's set for a whirlwind - but off-screen, things were just as intense for series creator Emer Kenny, who couldn't rely on her famous (and busy) husband. Karen Pirie's second season is packed with intense drama and explosive bombshells - but things were just as intense behind the scenes. Series creator Emer Kenny juggled triple duties as writer, executive producer and cast member as Karen's best friend River… while also being a new mum. 'Filming was hectic,' she says, 'My baby was 12 weeks old when I started writing the season and he was 18 months old when we were shooting. He came to Glasgow with me for three months.' Emer had a secret weapon, but it wasn't her husband, presenter Rick Edwards. 'I wouldn't have been able to do it without my mum,' she says. 'My husband was away working in Germany at the Euros because he's a presenter, so I had my mum with me at all times.' Kylie Minogue helped too, making a daunting experience a delight: 'Kylie has her own brand of rose that we drank the whole way through. It was absolutely crazy but I never feel more alive than when we're making stuff. It just feels thrilling.' Lauren Lyle returns to the ITV crime drama as the sharp, scrappy Scottish detective in the second season of Karen Pirie, and DI Karen's ready to ruffle a few feathers. Freshly promoted - albeit reluctantly - she's still got everything to prove. 'She's determined to prove herself,' Lauren says. 'Even though she's been promoted, she's still doubted. It's a reluctant promotion. Where her boss says, 'You're difficult but you're great so you deserve it.' That's what drives her. There's a general frustration with men being in her way and having to listen to them.' So it's no surprise that Emer also felt the pressure. 'It was a little daunting,' she says, 'Season one was my first time writing a show. Coming back, you really hope you can match the energy and bring another good story. So I was a little daunted but the book has a really exciting story.' Based on A Darker Domain, the second novel in the Karen Pirie series, the new season dives into a case that's haunted the nation for decades: the 1984 disappearance of heiress Catriona Grant and her toddler son, Adam. 'She's kidnapped at gunpoint, and then a ransom note arrives at her family home with a polaroid of her, and she is never seen again,' teases Emer. 'There's never a handover. No other ransom note was received.' Until now. When a body is found in a remote quarry, it blows the case wide open. But it's not Catriona. 'It's a man,' says Emer, 'But her car key is in his pocket.' As the investigation unfolds, so do the secrets - including Catriona's steamy, hidden affair with Mick, played by The Last Kingdom 's Mark Rowley. 'Julia (Brown) and Mark were amazing together,' Emer says, 'When I got their auditions in, I knew it would work. It was really important that their love story felt romantic and real.' But Catriona isn't the only one getting her heart tangled this season. Karen's own love life heats up with DS Phil Parhatka, played by Zach Wyatt, but she's keeping it strictly under wraps. 'Karen's under the impression a woman can only have one of the other - a career or a home life,' Lauren says. 'Phil's a good, smart man who's willing to support her, but Karen thinks she has to choose her career to keep getting ahead. Her career gives her a sense of worth, but it can damage her love life.' But the cold case earns her more attention and Karen struggles to keep the balance. 'No one at work knows they're together and she wants to keep it that way,' Emer says. 'But there's a whole new level of public interest. This is an even bigger case than the first one so she has a lot of eyes on her.' If the stakes are higher, the humour's sharper too - something inspired by Miss Congeniality. 'Lauren and I always talk about Sandra Bullock 's character in that film as a big touchstone. We love her humour and her no-nonsense personality,' Emer says. Other icons helped shape Karen's DNA: Helen Mirren 's steely Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, Kate Winslet 's bruised brilliance in Mare of Easttown and Toni Collette 's grit in Unbelievable. Season two took the cast from gritty Glasgow streets to the sun-drenched chaos of Malta. 'We had to move the shoot to September because it was too hot in Malta to shoot,' Emer remembers. 'We had tons of running scenes through the streets of Malta in 40 degree heat. But I think they loved it. I think they loved having their inner James Bond moments.' Audiences clearly love it too and with eight novels in the series (and counting), there's no shortage of source material. 'There is potential for another season and ITV are really supportive,' Emer says. 'It just depends on whether the audience wants more.' But for now, Karen is here to stay - and she's fiercer than ever.
