Worker charged, daycare license suspended after 16-month-old child's death
PREVIOUS COVERAGE: 16-month-old dies at Lenoir daycare; investigation underway
Channel 9 reported when the child, identified as Maddy, was found unresponsive at Creative Beginnings of Lenoir Monday afternoon. First responders said Maddy didn't wake up after a nap.
NCDHHS sent out a notice Wednesday afternoon saying it was suspending the daycare operator's license 'based on the agency's findings that the public health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.'
The report says the Division of Child Development and Early Education got information about an incident at the daycare on May 20, the same day that Maddy died. The report doesn't reference Maddy's death, specifically.
The daycare was ordered to close at the end of the business day on Wednesday. The operator of the daycare, Kids Time of Lenoir LLC, can appeal the administrative action.
Channel 9 learned that one woman has been criminally charged in connection with the case. According to court records, 29-year-old Alexandra Lee Coffey is charged with involuntary manslaughter. She was booked into custody in Caldwell County.
Officials said the daycare has been cooperating with the investigation.
A GoFundMe has been created to help Maddy's mother and siblings.
This is a developing story, check back for updates.

Vigil to be held Friday night for Belinda Sarkodie at location of fatal shooting
A court publication ban now prohibits identifying the 17-year-old suspect in the Belinda Sarkodie homicide. His name and photo were previously released under a temporary court order. A vigil to mourn Belinda Sarkodie, an innocent bystander killed in a shooting last week, is scheduled for Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. at the corner of King and James streets. The location of the vigil is where the 26-year-old was killed July 11 when a 17-year-old allegedly shot at a group of three males around 5:30 p.m. outside Jackson Square. Sarkodie, who'd recently immigrated to Canada from Ghana, was struck while waiting for a bus and died on the scene. Hamilton police have said Sarkodie had no connection to either the alleged shooter or targets. Belinda Sarkodie, 26, was fatally shot downtown on July 11. On Friday, police told The Spectator there are no updates at this time regarding the investigation, and the suspect is still at large. 'Hamilton Police continue to actively search for the suspect and urge him to obtain legal counsel and turn himself in,' Erin Gunnell, corporate communications co-ordinator, said in an email. A GoFundMe has been organized by the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario. According to the page, Sarkodie studied environmental sciences in Ghana at the University of Education, Winneba — Mampong Campus and graduated with first class honours in 2021. She moved to Hamilton in 2024. Sarkodie is the second innocent bystander to be killed in a shooting at a bus stop in Hamilton this year. In April, international student Harsimrat Randhawa was also killed at a bus stop on the Mountain. Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the Sarkodie shooting is asked to contact Det. Michael Ebert of the homicide unit at 905-546-4167. More to come. Démar Grant is a reporter at The Spectator. dgrant@ Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Leader of notorious Mass. gang sentenced to prison following decade of violence
A 26-year-old former leader of a notorious Massachusetts gang known for a decade of bloodshed was sentenced to prison Wednesday. Aaron Diaz Liranzo, also known as 'Sosa,' was sentenced by U.S. Senior District Court Nathaniel M. Gorton to 14 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Diaz Liranzo was arrested and charged in February when authorities said he was the leader of the Lynn Chapter of the Trinitarios gang. He pleaded guilty to RICO conspiracy, or conspiring to participate in criminal operations in a pattern of illegal activity, in March. He was one of at least 22 active gang members who were charged with state or federal crimes earlier this year. He was the sixth gang member charged to plead guilty. The charges stem from a slew of organized criminal activities in Massachusetts over the past decade, including the murders of six people and the attempted killings of 11 others. In February, officials called the indictments a 'significant blow' to the criminal enterprise. Diaz Liranzo was the leader of the Lynn Chapter from at least 2021 until 2025, called 'the Primera' or 'Number One,' according to the U.S. District Attorney's Office. The 26-year-old admitted to participating in a shooting outside of a Lynn nightclub in March 2019, where he shot at three people inside a car, the office said. Two people were severely injured, though both survived. The shooting was planned to target rival gang members and the victims were lured there by another gang member who 'posed as a woman who needed a ride,' the district attorney's office said. Massachusetts Trinitarios have committed multiple homicides in Essex County over the past decade and are believed to be responsible for numerous attempted murders, shootings, kidnappings and robberies, the district attorney's office said.
