Cheap spray will 'instantly turn away' slugs and snails from your garden

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Gardeners have shared a 'very exciting' homemade remedy that they claim will 'instantly' deter slugs and snails from plants - and it involves a very common kitchen ingredient
Slugs and snails are the crafty culprits that lurk beneath foliage in damp nooks, feasting on anything they encounter, including your prized vegetables. These sneaky invaders can cause chaos without being noticed, but tell-tale signs like nibbled leaves and glistening trails soon reveal their presence.
To fend off these unwelcome guests, gardening buffs often turn to DIY solutions, with one particular homemade brew boasting "instant" effectiveness. Lara Smith, a member of the Facebook community, shared her triumph with a straightforward concoction of garlic and water to deter the slippery intruders.

She excitedly posted: "Something very exciting happened tonight. So I was spraying my hostas after it had gone dark and saw a snail and slug on their way."

She elaborated: "I sprayed the garlic solution in front of them and they instantly turned away. I thought I would try a bit more to see what happened."
Lara's trial proved successful: "So I did it again in front of it and a bigger area, and they turned away again and avoided the whole area covered with garlic spray."
It appears that slugs and snails have an aversion to potent aromas, which positions garlic as an effective deterrent to protect your plants from these voracious pests.

The allium family, which encompasses garlic, is well-known for its pest-repelling properties, effectively warding off various insects, including slugs and snails.
Garden enthusiasts can utilise both fresh and other forms of garlic to safeguard their verdant domains from slug and snail invasions. Lara then went on to explain how she prepared her powerful garlic mixture.
She detailed: "To make the homemade garlic spray, I put one chopped garlic glove into 500ml warm water, and started to use it after I left it overnight.
"I left it outdoors where there was no direct sunshine with the garlic in and put it in a spray bottle when I needed it. Don't know how long you could keep it as I am new to it. But I made mine two weeks ago."
The mixture can be stored for several months in the refrigerator, so feel free to whip up additional batches for later. In the comments section, another gardening enthusiast shared their insights, revealing that the solution stays potent for up to a year with proper storage, reports the Express.
Hazel Taylor remarked: "I've kept garlic spray from one year to the next and it still works - if kept somewhere cool." Gardening gurus at Sienna Hosta also endorse a similar garlic concoction, observing that it can remain effective for an entire year when kept in a cool, dry spot or refrigerated.

Air fryers will be free of grease in 15 minutes if you use 2 ingredients — no scrubbing

A TikTok user has shared a simple hack to clean an air fryer basket using just two household items - and it doesn't involve any scrubbing Air fryers have become a must-have in the kitchen, but if not cleaned properly or regularly, they can cause problems. The design of the air fryer allows food particles, grease and oils to build up. ‌ If neglected, this grime can accumulate and affect the appliance's performance over time, resulting in substandard or unpleasant meals. ‌ If your air fryer requires a deep clean, one TikToker has revealed a simple method using just two items, promising sparkling results in minutes without the need for hard scrubbing. Here's what you need to do. ‌ Before you begin cleaning, make sure all baskets are removed from the appliance. Then, generously sprinkle baking soda over the basket. Baking soda is effective at tackling any build-up of grease and grime. Follow this by drizzling washing up liquid over the baking soda, reports the Express. ‌ Next, TikToker Ida boils a kettle of water which she then pours over the air fryer baskets. The hot water will react with the baking soda and washing up liquid, helping to dislodge stubborn food particles. Allow the solution to soak for 15 minutes. After the soaking period, discard the dirty water and rinse away any remaining residue with more water. All the grime should have loosened from the basket and be easily rinsed down the sink. Baking soda has been praised as an outstanding cleaning solution, owing to its slightly abrasive consistency that tackles grime effortlessly. ‌ Its rough texture proves ideal for removing persistent dirt and food particles, making the scrubbing task considerably easier. Vanguard Cleaning emphasises another advantage of baking soda: its alkaline characteristics render it a superb odour eliminator, especially when dealing with stubborn food aromas in air fryers. When mixed with washing-up liquid, the mixture acquires extra surfactants, which excel at surrounding and removing grease and grime from surfaces. Beyond its cleaning capabilities, baking soda also serves as a natural deodoriser, guaranteeing that any lingering odours are completely eliminated after a thorough clean. Dr Oetker explains the science behind baking soda's smell-busting abilities, explaining: "Most nasty smells in the air contain some sort of acid. As an alkali, baking soda reacts with those acids and neutralises them."

Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here Article continues below A spokesperson for Cardiff council said: "During major events at the Principality Stadium, road closures in Cardiff city centre prevent some of our waste collection vehicles from accessing cordoned off areas. "To manage this a longstanding cleaning schedule is in place. Cleansing teams empty the bins during the concert whilst the crowd are in the stadium. "For health and safety reasons, our cleansing teams must leave before the event ends and large crowds exit the stadium. ‌ "The teams then return in the early hours to complete the clean-up. "We continuously review the arrangements for emptying bins during concerts and refine our schedule as required. "Residents are reminded not to leave black bags next to litter bins. ‌ "General household waste should be disposed of through the regular collection service. If a bin is full, please take your litter home."
