The Casino Social Media PlatformThat Wants to ‘Kill' Facebook and TikTok
The July 12 offering marked the debut of $PUMP, the platform's official token. Pump.fun offered 15% of its 1 trillion token supply to the public at $0.004 per token across crypto exchanges like Kraken, KuCoin, and Bitget. The sale was supposed to run for three days. It sold out in 12 minutes.
Launched in January 2024, Pump.fun lets anyone create and trade tokens in seconds. Think of these tokens as unique digital assets, almost like custom digital money or shares in a very niche online community. Many of these are 'memecoins,' cryptocurrencies that gain value primarily from internet hype and community buzz rather than traditional business models. Pump.fun called itself a 'decentralized social casino' where memes and market speculation collide. So far, it has launched more than 11 million tokens and generated over $750 million in protocol revenue, making it one of the fastest-growing crypto projects ever.
Think of it like Reddit meets Robinhood meets a Vegas slot machine. Users create tokens, hype them up, and hope the internet catches on. Creators get attention. Traders get volatility. Everyone chases the next pump.
Now, with $PUMP, the company wants to take things even further.
but that was just the beginning
we're building pump fun to replace existing social platforms with one that gives instead of takes
whether you're a trader, creator, startup founder, or anyone else, pump fun will allow you to tap into a global network of instant money & attention
— pump.fun (@pumpdotfun) July 9, 2025According to the team, the $PUMP token is designed to be the fuel for a new kind of internet, one that rewards creators and users directly, not the platforms. Its roadmap includes incentives like fee rebates, token buybacks, and sharing revenue with token holders. But the core pitch is simple: Replace your social network with a trading protocol.
'We're building Pump.fun to replace existing social platforms with one that gives instead of takes,' the company wrote. 'Whether you're a trader, creator, startup founder, or anyone else, Pump.fun will allow you to tap into a global network of instant money and attention.'
To be clear, Pump.fun is not a social media app in the traditional sense. It's a token casino with a meme strategy. But in 2025, that might be close enough.
Memecoins are no longer a joke. They're a strategy. Platforms like Pump.fun and its competitors (such as LetsBONK) are transforming crypto from a financial product into a cultural product. They're moving fast, breaking things, and skipping the app store entirely. In the Web3 world, tokens are content. Hype is marketing. And attention is capital.
And if you're wondering how it all scales, it already has. The $600 million raise puts Pump.fun in a league of its own. Even major crypto exchanges like Bybit couldn't keep up, citing API overload during the sale. Trading for $PUMP has since launched on Bitget and other crypto exchanges.
If this all sounds too good to be true, regulators seem to agree. The token sale excluded U.S. and U.K. residents due to legal concerns. Meanwhile, competitors like LetsBONK are gaining ground fast. And there's no guarantee that Pump.fun's promised incentives will materialize. But if money is attention and memes are the message, Pump.fun may have already cracked the code for the next generation of digital platforms.
The social internet might not be dead. It might just be tokenized.

Trump Media Files for Third Crypto ETF
Cronos, XRP and Solana have entered the chat. Trump Media filed last week with the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a new fund, the Truth Social Crypto Blue Chip ETF, which would primarily hold Bitcoin but also Ether, Solana, Cronos and XRP. Its fees have not been disclosed, but the crypto exchange platform is slated to act as the fund's digital custodian. The move is the latest foray by President Trump's media company into the increasingly deregulated, and saturated, world of crypto products. READ ALSO: Vanguard Expands Fixed-Income Menu with 3 Treasury ETFs and Tariff Fallout Hasn't Hit Markets Yet. Issuers Say That Could Change The filing taps into increased demand for cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin, said Bryan Armour, Morningstar's director of ETF and passive strategies research. 'As more cryptocurrencies are approved for spot ETFs generally, I think there will be more appetite and significant product development around an indexed version of multiple cryptocurrencies,' he said, 'so my guess is they'll appear in different ways.' The problem is that Solana, XRP and Cronos aren't yet available to trade as spot funds, which has slowed the launch of index-type crypto ETFs, Armour said. That leaves little room for Trump Media's other two ETFs to differentiate themselves from existing funds. It's only a matter of time until the SEC's approval of additional currencies opens the door for new players, however. 'It's a more level playing field because they'll be starting alongside other asset managers and there's potential to differentiate,' Armour said. '[Cronos] has a significant overweight, but that might appeal to some investors to get that type of mix.' Trump Media, which operates Trump's Truth Social platform, has now filed for three strategies with the SEC: The Truth Social Crypto Blue Chip ETF would have 70% of its assets allocated to Bitcoin, with 15%, 8%, 5% and 2% going to Ether, Solana, Cronos and XRP, respectively. The Truth Social Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF would have 75% of its assets allocated to Bitcoin and 25% to Ether. The Truth Social Bitcoin ETF would be a spot Bitcoin ETF, aiming to serve as a Bitcoin reserve for the US government. The Blue Chip version will allocate about 5% of its holdings to Cronos — a currency developed by an affiliate of the fund's custodian, Foris DAX Trust Company. That's of particular note, Armour said, because the product should have a 1% allocation based on market cap. Name Brand? The main force behind Trump Media's crypto ETFs at present is the Trump name itself, which may not be enough, said Roxanna Islam, head of sector and industry research at VettaFi. 'They do appeal more to Trump fans or people that are anti-mainstream financial issuers. But that can only go so far,' she said, adding that fees will also play a role. 'Will they even remotely catch up? It's hard to say, because they're over a year behind.' This post first appeared on The Daily Upside. Meta delivers eye-popping AI announcement
Catastrophic forgetting. Don't worry. I am not talking about politics. Catastrophic forgetting is a "lovely" feature of deep neural networks. They overwrite old knowledge when learning new things. There are different ways to mitigate this, but the problem persists. If this problem were solved, we wouldn't have new papers with new mitigation methods. The most recent one is from July 11, titled "Catastrophic Forgetting Mitigation Through Plateau Phase Activity Profiling." Science still doesn't know how human memory works. I don't even need to discuss different theories about how memories are "stored" in the brain to prove my point. Related: Microsoft wants to help you live longer Quote from a study, Beyond the Pump: A Narrative Study Exploring Heart Memory, should be enough: "Studies indicate that heart transplant recipients may exhibit preferences, emotions, and memories resembling those of the donors, suggesting a form of memory storage within the transplanted organ." What is the next big advancement for AI, artificial hearts? I've already written that there is no intelligence without consciousness, and you can't get consciousness by "building" intelligence. It does not work that way. Alas, I have to admit, forgetting is something that Homo sapiens does have in common with neural networks. Humans forget things too quickly. This is why our civilization works the way it does. Don't get me wrong: I don't hate "AI". Google's DeepMind is doing wonderful research on deciphering the way Dolphins communicate, which is a perfect example of how large language models are put to good use. Unfortunately, most companies are super focused on using LLMs to build "real" AI chatbots, which will lead nowhere. One company that has become hellbent on building the best AI in the universe is Meta Platforms. Don't you hate those horrible buzzwords like quiet quitting, career catfishing, and other cringeworthy horrors of LinkedIn? Well, I have one buzzword for Meta free of charge: panic investing. Meta (META) thinks the clock is ticking, and some other company might get the holy grail of all tech, such as AGI, superintelligence, or, to be comical, Skynet. Whoever makes that AI will be spared by the Terminators. That is how Meta's investing strategy makes it look. I covered Meta's string of recent investments, which ended with what to me looks like a desperate move. But let's go over that list again. Related: How Apple may solve its Google Search problem The investment speed shifted gear after Meta invested $14.8 billion in Scale AI and acquired a 49% nonvoting stake. The company poached big AI names like Alexandr Wang, Koray Kavukcuoglu, Dr. Jack Rae, voice AI expert Johan Schalkwyk, OpenAI researchers Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai. The desperate move was hiring Apple's executive in charge of AI models, Ruoming Pang. Meta isn't stopping; if anything, it is shifting gears again and investing even more. Mark Zuckerberg posted his plan for superintelligence on Threads and Facebook on Monday. "We're also going to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into compute to build superintelligence. We have the capital from our business to do this," said Zuckerberg in his message. Zuckerberg also said that Meta is building several multi-GW clusters. The first one, Prometheus, is supposed to go online next year. That is an interesting name choice, but it is a bit ominous. At least it isn't Skynet. More AI Stocks: Veteran fund manager raises eyebrows with latest Meta Platforms moveGoogle plans major AI shift after Meta's surprising $14 billion moveAnalysts revamp forecast for Nvidia-backed AI stock According to Tom's Hardware, Elon Musk's xAI is buying an overseas power plant and shipping it to the U.S. xAI's new data center is supposed to be powered by one million GPUs and up to 2 Gigawatts of power under one roof, which could power almost 2 million homes. It looks like Zuckerberg needed to top this, so he also announced that Meta is building Hyperion, which will be able to scale up to 5GW over several years. So, I guess that will consume power for about 4.75 million homes. Nice, but why stop there? "We're building multiple more titan clusters as well. Just one of these covers a significant part of the footprint of Manhattan," said Zuckerberg. If this pace continues, Meta should announce a supercomputer covering a Rhode Island-sized area before the end of the year. Crypto Mixer Co-Founder on Trial as Trump Embraces Digital Assets
While President Donald Trump's administration has dropped or rolled-back several high-profile actions against the US digital asset industry, the ongoing case involving crypto mixer Tornado Cash is a significant exception. Roman Storm, co-founder of a software platform that facilitates anonymous crypto transactions, is facing a trial on charges that he helped launder more than $1 billion, with opening arguments scheduled to start Tuesday in New York. That sum includes hundreds of millions allegedly stolen by the Lazarus Group, which the US says is a cybercrime organization that works for the North Korean government.
