Badri-Kedar Temple Committee seeking legal advice over construction of replica of Kedarnath temple in Samajwadi Party's bastion Etawah

The Hindu19-07-2025
Opposing the construction of the replica of Kedarnath temple in Samajwadi Party's (SP) bastion, Etawah, the authorities of Badri-Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC) said on Saturday (July 19, 2025) that they are seeking legal advice in the matter. The priest community in Uttarakhand is also up in arms against the temple project, launched by former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav.
The construction of over 70 feet tall Kedareshwar Mahadev Temple, which looks exactly like Kedarnath temple, started in 2021. Being built at the approximate cost of ₹50 crore in front of Safari Park in Etawah, the home turf of SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav and is likely to be completed in the next six months. Akhilesh Yadav had recently shared a video of the temple on social stirring controversy over the same.
Condemning the move of building the replica of a temple of 'religious and mythological importance', BKTC President Hemant Dwivedi said that Kedarnath temple is one of the 11 Jyotirlinga and it should not be copied in any way.
'It is mentioned in the Vedas and Puranas that Kedarnath Dham is located in the Himalayan region, hence the replica temple of this important religious place should not be built elsewhere, it is against religious beliefs,' he said.
Mr. Dwivedi added that appropriate steps will be taken after legal opinion in the matter. he added that BKTC has also brought in the notice of the state government.
Suresh Semwal, president of Char Dham Teerth Purohit Mahapanchyat, the body of priests associated with char dham temples, said that construction of the replica of Kedarnath temple in Etawah is not only tampering with religious sentiments of people but also an attack on the identity and tradition of the Hindu temples.
'It is an insult to faith of millions of Hindus. If Uttarakhand government will not take appropriate measure to stop the construction of the temple in Etawah, the priest community will be forced to move to court,' he added.
After a Statewide agitation by the priest community last year, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) lead Uttarakhand government had pushed for a halt on the proposed construction of Kedarnath temple in Delhi's Burari. The project in Burari was inaugurated by the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami who faced a lot of heat over the same.
After both political pressure from the Opposition Congress and from the Char Dham temple priests, the State government had proposed in the Cabinet to make take legal action on the misuse of the name of Char Dham temples.

Parl braces for fiery debate on Pahalgam, Op Sindoor

New Delhi: After a week-long washout, Parliament is all set to return to work on Monday with a debate on Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor in Lok Sabha even as some Opposition parties are expected to raise noise on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Bihar electoral rolls. Top guns on both sides like Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress' Abhishek Banerjee are likely to speak in Lok Sabha during the debate. Singh is expected to be the first speaker, and he will spell out the contours of Operation Sindoor and subsequent developments, including the circumstances of the ceasefire and claims of US President Donald Trump that he brokered the de-escalation. All eyes will be on Singh on whether he would reveal the details of fighter aircraft India lost in the military confrontation, an issue on which the Opposition has been insisting that the government clean. Similarly, it will be keenly watched whether Congress would list Shashi Tharoor as a speaker, as he is at loggerheads with his party over his endorsement of the Modi government on the issue and leading a delegation to the US and other countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to intervene in the 'Special Discussion on India's Strong, Successful and Decisive Operation Sindoor in Response to the Terrorist Attack in Pahalgam for which 16 others have been allocated. The debate in the Rajya Sabha will start on Tuesday where also 16 hours is earmarked. The ruling BJP would be highlighting the Indian military's successful dismantlingof terror infrastructure in Pakistan, including Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur and hitting for the first time the Pakistani side of Punjab since the 1971 war. The party would also try to corner the Congress by highlighting the inner-party differences over its MPs participating in the multi-party delegations sent by the government.

‘Drug party' raid: Seven remanded in police custody till July 29

Pune: Judicial Magistrate First Class NS Bari on Sunday remanded seven individuals, including Pranjal Khewalkar—son-in-law of NCP (SP) leader Eknath Khadse—in police custody till July 29 in connection with a drug bust during a suspected party in Kharadi area. According to the prosecution, Pune Police raided a serviced apartment in the early hours of Sunday based on specific information. (REPRESENTATIVE PIC) The accused were produced before the holiday court, where public prosecutor Priyanka Vengurlekar sought seven days' police custody. She argued that further interrogation was necessary to trace the origin of the drugs, examine prior party records, and determine the involvement of other individuals. She also noted that some of the accused had criminal backgrounds and that the investigation was at a preliminary stage. Defence advocate Vijaysinh Thombare, representing Khewalkar, alleged that his client was being falsely implicated due to political motives. 'This is nothing but an attempt to sabotage my client's political career. His wife holds a political office, and this appears to be a trap,' he told the court. He claimed that there was no evidence of drug consumption by Khewalkar and that no medical report had been submitted to the court. According to the prosecution, Pune Police raided a serviced apartment in the early hours of Sunday based on specific information. The apartment, booked in Khewalkar's name, was the site of a party where five men and two women were present. Police seized liquor bottles, hookah setups, ganja, and 2.7 grams of cocaine—classified as an intermediate quantity under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS), 1985. Videos from the party, showing scenes of chaos and a woman in distress, went viral on social media. Prosecutor Vengurlekar said that the accused were habitual offenders and reiterated that the police followed due procedure. 'This is not an isolated case. The recovered contraband and supporting evidence validate the charges,' she said. Thombare countered that his client had been under surveillance for months. 'Police have previously followed him on two occasions and collected CCTV footages from hotels. This is the third time, and it seems to be a deliberate move to frame him. My client is not a criminal,' he said. Advocate Abid Mulani, representing two other accused, raised legal concerns over the arrests. 'The investigating agency failed to inform the accused of the grounds of their arrest at the time of detention, violating Section 50 of the Criminal Procedure Code. This renders their continued custody unlawful,' he argued. He submitted that accused number 3 and number 4 neither possessed nor consumed any narcotics, making the invocation of the NDPS Act against them untenable. While the court has kept the question of the legality of arrest open for further consideration, Mulani contended that continued custody of these two accused is unwarranted and amounts to a violation of their fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution.

Delhi Confidential: ‘SP Ki Pathshala'

On the directions of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, workers are running symbolic 'PDA pathshalas' (PDA schools) in villages where the UP government proposes to pair primary schools with other schools. Akhilesh has also announced that when his party comes to power, the schools will be back in their respective villages. In the day-long 'PDA pathshalas', SP workers taught children Hindi and English alphabets, besides numerals. Missing Link Two days after the Congress held a convention for its OBC leaders and workers at Talkatora stadium, there are whispers that it may take a while for the party to walk the talk vis-a-vis poll-bound Bihar. The party's screening committee for Bihar, some insiders say, does not have a local OBC leader. There are talks among the OBC workers that a state like Bihar with a large OBC population should have local OBC leader(s) in the screening committee, especially when Rahul Gandhi is reaching out to the OBCs.
