PSG beats Seattle Sounders 2-0, will face Inter Miami in round of 16 of FIFA Club World Cup 2025

The Hindu4 days ago

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored in the first half, Achraf Hakimi struck in the second and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured its place in the last 16 of the FIFA Club World Cup with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Monday afternoon.
Gianluigi Donnarumma kept his second clean sheet of the tournament in front of the Sounders home supporters without having to make a save as PSG (2-1-0, 6 points) closed out its Group B campaign and rebounded from a 1-0 defeat to Botafogo on Thursday.
As group winner, it will face Inter Miami, which was held to a 2-2 draw with Palmeiras.
Seattle (0-3-0, 0 points) became the second MLS team to be eliminated following LAFC's exit after its 0-1 loss to ES Tunis in Group D on Thursday.
Hakimi's goal came on a swift counter moments after one of the Sounders' best chances. Eventually, Bradley Barcola slalomed into the penalty area from the left, then picked out Hakimi on the opposite side of the box.
Hakimi had time to take a composing touch before firing in an emphatic finish from about 10 yards out.
As expected, PSG had the majority of the early chances. Desire Doue's effort forced Stefan Frei into a sprawling aerial save in the 12th minute.
But the Sounders had some success pressing high and nearly took a shocking lead in the 19th minute after turning PSG over at the edge of its own box -- only for Jesus Ferreira to fire his hurried effort well high of the target.
And the Parisians were fortunate with their 35th minute breakthrough. Vitinha's initial strike from the edge of the penalty area through traffic appeared to be heading wide of the right post. Instead, it struck Kvaratskhelia's back, redirecting it neatly inside the upright before Frei could react.
PSG nearly doubled its lead twice, early in the second half. After a promising attack down the left, Doue's 56th-minute attempt from about 10 yards was blocked by Nouhou's critical sprawling intervention. Four minutes later, Joao Neves volleyed Hakimi's outswinging service from the right just wide of the left post.

Low group stage turnout puts pressure on FIFA Club World Cup knock

The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is entering its knockout stage with plenty to prove—especially off the pitch. After a group phase marked by underwhelming attendance, FIFA now faces the challenge of reigniting fan engagement. More than one million empty seats were recorded across 48 group-stage matches, prompting concern about the tournament's ability to capture global attention despite its expanded format. While FIFA touted the participation of fans from 168 countries as a success, many stadiums—including 2026 World Cup venues—saw less than half their capacities filled. With heavyweights like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Lionel Messi's Inter Miami now entering the fray, organisers will hope for a sharp rise in energy and excitement as the tournament progresses. Sparse Crowds Despite Global Reach Despite FIFA's emphasis on international ticket sales, average attendance during the group stage was just over 34,700—a figure that represents 56.7% of listed seating capacity. MetLife Stadium, set to host the 2026 World Cup final, recorded a mere 44.9% fill rate across five matches. Other key venues, such as the Rose Bowl and Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium, fared similarly poorly. FIFA has remained tight-lipped on the matter, declining media requests for detailed comment from president Gianni Infantino. Knockouts Set to Feature European Dominance As the round of 16 kicks off, nine of the advancing teams are European clubs, with four from Brazil and one each from MLS, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. With heavyweights like Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich in action, a Champions League–like dominance seems inevitable. Notably, Manchester City was the only side to win all three group games. Weather Worries and Star Power The group stage saw five weather delays amid extreme summer temperatures, raising concerns ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, global stars are making headlines—Lionel Messi continues to shine for Inter Miami, while Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappé missed all group matches due to illness, with coach Xabi Alonso hopeful for his return. Brazil's Strong Showing All four Brazilian clubs have reached the knockout rounds, underlining the country's depth and competitive strength. Botafogo's win over PSG highlighted South America's challenge to European supremacy, while Flamengo, Fluminense, and Palmeiras have all impressed.

FIFA CWC: Bayern have to adapt to different kind of football vs Flamengo, says Tah

Florida: FC Bayern Munich's new signing Jonathan Tah believes his side have to adapt to a 'different kind of football' when they face Brazilian side Flamengo at the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. Tah has so far played 212 minutes so far at the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, completing the full 90 against both Auckland (10-0) and Boca Juniors (2-1) before coming on for Dayot Upamecano after 58 minutes against Benfica . 'It's South American intensity, it's a different kind of football. We have to adapt to that – and at the same time follow through with our game,' said Tah. The German defender also added how facing South American teams presents an almost 'away game' like situation given the intensity and passion their fans bring to the stadium. 'An away game because there'll certainly be a lot of South American fans in the stadium. Then it will again be about showing that seriousness on the pitch.' Bayern signed Tah ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup. The defender had made his first-team debut for Hamburger SV in August 2013 at the age of 17 years, five months and 23 days, making him the youngest debutant in the club's history at the time. After 20 senior appearances, the centre-back joined Fortuna Düsseldorf on a season-long loan, where he made 23 appearances, before signing for Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the 2015/16 campaign. He played 402 times for Werkself (18 goals, 13 assists) and won the Bundesliga and DFB Cup in 2024 as well as the Supercup. Tah also spoke about their 0-1 loss against Portuguese side Benfica and admitted their first half performance on that day was not good enough. 'The first half in particular against the Portuguese serial champions was simply not good enough We've spoken about that a lot already. 'I think the first match was downplayed a bit and I know we're not going to get the greatest praise for that, but winning 10-0 takes some work and you have to show the seriousness that we had. That's exactly what we need,'Tah added.
