Innovation to impact: IIM Lucknow study identifies 23 key success factors for circular economy startups

Time of India23-06-2025

MUMBAI: IIM Lucknow researchers have identified crucial success factors for circular startups, which focus on waste reduction, material reuse and efficient resource utilisation, diverging from conventional linear business models.
The research, undertaken by Professors Suresh Jakhar and Krishna Chandra Balodi, alongside Research Scholar Sagnika Datta, provides valuable insights for sustainable business development whilst promoting environmental stewardship.
The study arrives at a critical juncture, as environmental concerns intensify due to rising global temperatures and resource depletion. Forecasts indicate natural resource consumption will double by 2050, presenting substantial environmental and economic challenges.
Prof. Jakhar emphasised, "The Circular Economy (CE) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0) have emerged as highly pertinent topics for both academic research and industrial practice in recent years. Given that many CE start-ups leverage I4.0 technologies, understanding their success factors is crucial. The findings of this research offer a roadmap for entrepreneurs, managers, and policymakers, facilitating the development of successful I4.0-powered CE start-ups.

The circular economy presents a viable alternative through resource recovery and waste minimisation. However, its current 7.2% share of the global economy underscores the necessity for businesses to incorporate sustainability from inception.
The research team analysed Industry 4.0 startups that incorporate advanced technologies, including smart sensors, automation and real-time data processing, to enhance circular practices.
Through comprehensive literature analysis, expert consultation and structured decision-making approaches, the team identified 23 critical success factors, creating a practical framework for stakeholders to support these ventures.
Key success factors for startup growth and profitability include: · Having a clear circular business model, building the right technical skills, keeping supply chain data secure and transparent, working with other businesses.
Ms. Datta explained, "This study reveals the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for Circular Economy (CE) startups powered by Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies, offering a clear roadmap for success. After identifying 23 key factors, we ranked them by priority and found the top five to be: Innovative Circular Business Models, I4.0-Related Technological Competency, Information Security, Privacy and Transparency, Inter-Supply Chain and Inter-Sector Eco-Friendly Partnerships, and Collaboration Across Various Functions.
"
External factors influencing long-term success include: · Access to funding, good training and mentoring facilities, helpful government policies, demand for circular products.
Government and industry support in strengthening these conditions can foster circular innovation in India.
The researchers prioritised success factors and analysed their interconnections, identifying finance and infrastructure as fundamental enablers for advancement in skills, collaboration and innovation.
Prof. Balodi noted, "This study is unique because it is among the first to provide a comprehensive list of success factors specifically for Circular Economy (CE) startups powered by Industry 4.0 (I4.0). Furthermore, it goes beyond just listing these factors by: Prioritising them in order of importance, identifying their causal relationships, distinguishing between "cause" and "effect" drivers. This innovative categorisation creates a practical decision-making framework that is highly relevant for the field and represents a significant advancement in CE research, offering a clear, strategic roadmap for both academics and practitioners.

Akhilesh slams BJP for ‘graft' in Banke Bihari corridor

Lucknow: Lending support to protests by residents in Mathura against the proposed Banke Bihari Corridor, Samajwadi Party national president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday termed it as "corridor corruption" and likened it to a chapter in the "training manual" on misdeeds of the BJP . "BJP's aim behind corridors at religious sites is to take control of the donations coming in at the religious sites along with the wealth, property and funds owned by these places of worship." he said, describing these corridors as a means to enable the govt to take control of sacred sites. In a post on X, Akhilesh said the real idea behind taking over the management and governance of these religious sites was to find ways to sell off the offerings made by devotees at places of worship and pocket the proceeds and to find ways to mislead the people in the name of facilities. He quoted a video to buttress his charge that the BJP govt's move to develop Banke Bihari corridor has led to unrest in a section of the population around the temple in Mathura. Akhilesh said the real intention behind the move is to find ways to capture land presently in possession of these sites and find methods to make money through it. The idea is to purchase land at throwaway prices and then sell it off at ten times the buying rates. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sharp Design, Smoother Drives. He accused the BJP of creating an environment where small-time business outlets will be forced to shut shop when the BJP will take commission from big business houses and help them to set up their businesses in these "corridors". The SP chief said through these proposed "corridors", the BJP looks for ways to deprive the small local traders who have been earning their livelihood down the generations for centuries, of their businesses to help outsiders take control of the area. "They are on the lookout for ways to create this local-outsider divide to suit election interests," he said. "One question that pops up in everyone's mind is if all these corridors are aimed to benefit local people, why does the BJP fare poorly electorally in regions where these corridors have been built," he asked.

After a robust march, pharma exports slow

New Delhi: India's pharmaceuticals exports grew only 1.5% year-on-year in April and May after an impressive 31.2% jump in March when companies expedited shipments to meet year-end targets and also to avoid potential US tariffs, a top official said. In 2024-25, shipments to the US rose 20.4% to around $10.5 billion from approximately $ 8.7 billion in FY24 despite ongoing challenges related to pricing pressures, regulatory scrutiny, and geopolitical uncertainties, Namit Joshi, chairman of Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council ( Pharmexcil ), told ET. The industry remains confident of keeping the momentum and more than double overall pharma exports to $120-130 billion by 2030 from $50-55 billion now, he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Don't Overpay For A Will Or Executor Fees - Do This Instead Consumer Advice Read More Undo Pharmexcil is an authorised exports promotion agency under the commerce and industry ministry. Joshi said the surge in exports in March "was primarily driven by companies expediting shipments to meet financial year-end targets and consolidate annual performance metrics-a recurring trend observed every year." Live Events The announcement of potential tariffs on Indian pharmaceutical products by US President Donald Trump also contributed to the momentum, he said. "Fearing possible future restrictions, several Indian drug manufacturers advanced their shipments to the US, which would have otherwise taken place in April," Joshi said. "This pre-emptive move helped avoid potential tariff impacts but also led to a dip in April exports." Pharma exports in March jumped a staggering 48.8% from February. "While detailed country-wise figures for this period are yet to be released, the US-typically accounting for over 30% of India's total pharma exports-is presumed to have received a significant portion of this March surge," Joshi said. STRATEGIC REPOSITIONING Indian pharma exporters are responding to the dual pressures of regulatory tightening and evolving market demand by strengthening compliance, prioritising complex generics and value-added products, and pursuing strategic investments that enhance their long-term competitiveness in the US, Joshi said. "Heightened regulatory scrutiny, particularly in the form of frequent USFDA inspections and warning letters, has prompted Indian manufacturers to enhance compliance standards and invest in quality upgrades across manufacturing sites," he said. "Companies are increasingly adopting advanced technologies such as automation, data integrity systems, and digitised quality control frameworks to ensure regulatory alignment."
