'You meant so much to all of us and you always will! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart is breaking for all of your beautiful family, for Rute and for your kids. I promise you that in these difficult times and beyond we will always be there for your family.'
Van Dijk, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, teammate Andrew Robertson and manager Arne Slot were among those from Liverpool who attended Saturday's funeral in Jota's hometown.

Ian Rush Pays Emotional Tribute to Jota Amid Heartbreaking Double Loss

Club Legend Ian Rush Reflects on Tragedy Liverpool icon Ian Rush has expressed his deep sorrow following the tragic passing of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva. The pair were killed in a car accident in the early hours of Thursday morning, leaving the football world in mourning. Rush, Liverpool's all-time leading goalscorer, spoke emotionally about the loss, comparing the grief to past tragedies that have tested the unity of the club. Advertisement Despite being invited to Jota's funeral in Gondomar, Portugal, Rush was unable to attend due to the passing of his own brother, Gerald. He admitted that juggling his own family loss while processing the death of Jota had been overwhelming. 'It hasn't really hit home yet,' he said. 'Diogo was a great player—probably the best finisher at the club—and more importantly, a wonderful person.' Mourning a Team-Mate and Friend The Liverpool squad flew to Portugal to pay their respects in person, with players and staff attending Jota's funeral. The sight of so many current and former Reds gathered in Gondomar captured the strength of Liverpool's sense of family—an ethos long spoken about by players past and present. Rush, reflecting on the emotional toll, added: 'At Liverpool, we've always seen ourselves as one big family. When one of us goes, we rally around. That's what we've always done, and that's what we'll do now.' Advertisement He drew parallels with the unity shown in the aftermath of Hillsborough—an enduring moment in the club's history—and highlighted how the Liverpool community instinctively comes together in the face of grief. 'It doesn't matter whether you're a player or a supporter—we all stick together,' he said. Jota's Legacy Beyond the Pitch Jota's impact at Liverpool was clear, not just in his goals and performances but in the way he carried himself. Rush was unequivocal in his praise: 'He always gave 100 percent. He could change a game whether he started or came off the bench. He never craved headlines, and that was just as true off the pitch.' Described as a 'real gent' by those who knew him, Jota was someone who earned respect quietly. His work ethic, humility, and professionalism left a mark on the dressing room, making his death all the more difficult for those preparing to return for pre-season. Advertisement 'It's hard to just get back to training and act like everything is normal,' Rush said. 'Footballers are human too. For some, it'll take time for the full weight of this tragedy to be felt.' Pain Shared Across the Liverpool Family As the days go on, the Liverpool squad—alongside staff, fans, and club legends—will try to process the loss of a team-mate, a brother, and a friend. Rush believes that while grief often comes in waves, the bond between those in the Liverpool family will be the difference in helping people heal. 'You try to move on, but it's not easy,' he concluded. 'Diogo will never be forgotten. He truly embodied everything Liverpool stands for.' Advertisement This tragedy has shaken Liverpool to its core, but in the spirit of solidarity that defines the club, the memory of Diogo Jota will continue to inspire those who wear the shirt he once wore with pride.

New York Giants' Russell Wilson sees fashion brand make big screen debut

Russell Wilson's name is hot again. First, he signed a one-year deal with the New York Giants to be with their starting quarterback this season, and now comes the news that one of his off-the-field ventures is taking off as well. From Pro Football Network: Wilson has generated a whopping $305,362,520 from his NFL career, but he is also building a fortune off the field. Wilson launched his first clothing brand, Good Man Brand, in 2016 before teaming up with his wife, Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Ciara, for his signature clothing line, 3BRAND. A little over four years after the launch, the brand has now made its big screen debut in Marvel's 'Ironheart,' and the couple can't hide their happiness over achieving the significant milestone. Wilson shared his happiness over the milestone achievement in an Instagram post and wrote, 'MARVEL baby! @3Brand making our debut on the big screen! Grateful to be in Episode 1 #IronHeart on @DisneyPlus #INSPIRE.' Wilson signed a one-year, $10.5 million deal with Big Blue in March. It is an incentive-laden contract that could net the 10-time Pro Bowler over $21 million if all benchmarks are achieved. The Giants, who have had both quality and depth issues at quarterback over the past six seasons, have brought in not only Wilson but Jameis Winston as well. Then they added Jaxson Dart in the draft to bulk up the quarterback room even more. Wilson is expected to play as long as he is effective this season, but many experts expect the Giants to give Dart at least a test run in his rookie year.

Paddy Pimblett Breaks Down Bold Career Plan Amid Ilia Topuria Saga

Paddy Pimblett Breaks Down Bold Career Plan Amid Ilia Topuria Saga originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UFC fighter and MMA artist Paddy Pimblett has never lacked confidence, and now the Liverpool native is eyeing a future that extends beyond the Octagon. Advertisement Before that, though, he wants to make history by beating the reigning champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter Ilia Topuria, as well as holding another belt. Pimblett, currently ranked No. 10 in the UFC lightweight division, has hinted at a two-step plan for the short-term future: dethrone Topuria, then jump to welterweight—with Jack Della Maddalena as the current champion—to chase a second belt. 'When I win (the lightweight) belt, then go up and win another belt,' Pimblett said on the July 1 episode of "The Chattin' Pony Podcast" with Brian Ortega. 'There's a few fights there at 170 that do interest me… 'But for now, I'm just focused on winning the lightweight belt.' Advertisement UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria confronts contender Paddy Bottari-GettyImages Pimblett's projected run would start with a fight against Topuria, the undefeated lightweight champion, who recently knocked out Charles Oliveira. Topuria and Pimblett have had a long-standing rivalry, with Pimblett claiming Topuria's 'kryptonite' and predicting he'd finish the champion inside the distance. The 30-year-old lightweight has drawn attention for his in-camp discipline and out-of-camp weight swings, famously jumping from 156 lbs to 198 lbs in just weeks earlier this year. Should Pimblett pull off the two-belt run, he hinted at another massive career move—retirement from MMA and a pivot to acting. Advertisement 'That's exactly what I want to do when I retire. Get into a bit of acting,' Pimblett said on the aforementioned podcast. For now, and unless Topuria offers Pimblett the opportunity of fighting against him for the title on the line, Pimblett will need to earn a shot at the belt by climbing up the lightweight ladder from his current No. 10 spot in the leaderboard.
