The King of Sweden presented the award to rock band Queen, US jazz musician Herbie Hancock and Canadian conductor Barbara Hannigan during a gala ceremony held in Stockholm on Tuesday.
Founded by Abba publisher, lyricist and manager Stig 'Stikkan' Anderson, the gong celebrates the power and importance of music, and is awarded to individuals, groups or institutions for excellence in the world of music.
On receiving the award, Taylor, 75, said: 'When we started our band… we had ambitions, but never dreamed of the journey that was to follow.
'We were fortunate in the fact that our four wildly different personalities came together to achieve a wonderful chemistry.
'The Polar Music Prize is exceptional in the fact that unlike other awards it recognises the entirety of an artiste's career.
'What an honour to be included in the glittering cavalcade of previous laureates. True Olympian company indeed. We are so proud to be the recipients of this incredibly prestigious award.'
Sir Brian, 77, added: 'In this special moment, I contemplate how that younger Brian May in 1974 would have felt if he knew that we would be living this kind of dream 50 years in the future.'
Hannigan, 54, said she was 'deeply thankful for all the collaborations which have nurtured me', adding: 'I am humbled to be among these Laureates of 'musical royalty', and to share the honours tonight with the legends who are Herbie Hancock and Queen.'
Hancock, 85, said: 'What an incredible honour to be with you here tonight, to receive the prestigious Polar Music Prize. I'm deeply humbled.
'I accept this award not just for myself, but on behalf of all the musicians, and dreamers who dare to believe that creativity and human connection can change the world.
'I truly believe that music and the arts can illuminate the path towards a more peaceful and compassionate world, and it is vital that we, the artists, give back and share our knowledge and experiences with the younger generations, our leaders of tomorrow.'
This year's ceremony took place at the Grand Hotel in Stockholm, presented by mezzo-soprano and journalist, Boel Adler.
The evening featured live music from artists including and rock band Ghost, who performed a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody with Opeth guitarist Fredrik Akesson, and Queen frontman Adam Lambert who performed the hits Who Wants To Live Forever and Another One Bites The Dust.
Guitarist Sir Brian, drummer Taylor, late frontman Freddie Mercury and bassist John Deacon scored numerous number ones during Queen's heyday, as the band became one of the best live touring acts in the world.
They were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame by Nirvana's Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins in 2001 and had all four members inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame in 2003.
Mercury died aged just 45 in 1991.
Previous winners of the Polar Music Prize have included Beatles star Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Stooges singer Iggy Pop.
The Polar Music Prize is awarded by an independent, 11-member board who select the winners from nominations from the public and the International Music Council.

Singer cancels tour over poor ticket sales and confesses he 'aimed too high'

Grammy-nominated artist JP Saxe has been forced to axe his entire tour unless he sells 20,000 tickets immediately after he 'aimed too high'. The Canadian singer, 32, is best known for his hit song If The World Was Ending, which he released in 2019 with vocals from Julia Michaels. The track landed him a Grammy nomination for Song of the Year 2021 but lost out to I Can't Breathe by H.E.R. Four years on, and he's taken to social media to confess he had overestimated how many tickets he could sell to his latest tour. 'I'm extremely embarrassed to tell you this, but I'm going to tell you anyway,' he began in a video posted to social media. 'If I don't sell 20 or so thousand tickets to my tour in the next 48 hours, it's going to be cancelled. 'If we're just not in a place yet to sell out these 2,000-, 3,000-cap venues – that's fine. It's always been my goal to connect deeply, not widely, and I stand by that.' The Make Yourself At Home tour was due to start next month with 32-dates scheduled across America, ending in October. He urged fans who might be waiting until the last minute to purchase tickets to act now so it could go ahead. 'Just in case you were waiting till the week of or night of to buy a ticket – that approach just isn't going to work, because there won't be a show to buy a ticket to,' JP continued. 'So whether that happens or not, I'm grateful to you for caring about my songs, and I hold on to a sliver of hope that I will see you in the fall.' After his message, an influx of 'a few thousand extra' ticket sales came in but it still hasn't been enough to save the tour. 'I am beyond grateful to every one of you who bought one,' JP said in a follow-up video once the 48hour deadline had passed. 'Those few thousand tickets are a reminder that being transparent in failure sometimes can be more powerful than the façade of success – a reminder of how wonderful it can be to ask for help and watch a community come together.' With a smile, he added: 'This really was the nicest the internet has ever been to me.' Apologising to those who wanted to come, JP confirmed purchases would be refunded in full 'with a small side of immense gratitude from a dorky ginger Canadian'. He then went on to write about the experience for Variety, explaining that honesty is not always seen as the best policy in the industry but it was important to him. More Trending Rather than an 'ego-saving explanation', the I Don't Miss You singer admitted he had 'aimed too high – my bad.' 'Self-image is delicate on a good day, fragile on a bad one,' he wrote. 'Applause for success is great. 'But there is something more interesting about be applauded for honesty in failure. It's not as good for my ego — but maybe i'ts better for my growth'. Got a story? The TV star was seen with her famous son Matty Healy in West Hollywood this week. ‌ The 67-year-old has recently faced criticism from Taylor's fans after making a dig at how she tends to write songs about her exes. She also hinted that Taylor's fans often lash out at anyone that makes a negative comment about her. ‌ Now, Denise has been spotted looking emotional while chatting to her son Matty outside a restaurant in West Hollywood on Thursday. It comes after Sharon Osbourne breaks down in tears at Ozzy's funeral in heartbreaking scenes. ‌ In images shared by TMZ, Denise was seen blowing her nose and dabbing at her eyes with a tissue as she spoke to Matty, before hugging the 1975 singer. A source told the issue that Matty was consoling his mother about a family issue. ‌ Matty sat beside his mum after they went out to dinner together along with Matty's fiancée Gabbriette Bechtel. The mother-son duo looked to be having a deep conversation while Matty smoked a cigarette. The pair then stood up and had a long hug before going back inside. It is unknown exactly why Denise was upset, but a source reportedly told TMZ: "There was a family matter that Matty was consoling his mother about." ‌ Denise appeared on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live last month where she was asked about Taylor's latest album The Tortured Poets Department. Denise told host Andy Cohen: "Obviously, on pain of death can I talk about that episode, but being her mother-in-law is a role that I am glad I lost." Audience members were surprised by the statement, but Denise then went on to clarify what she meant. She said: "Not that I have anything against [Taylor] at all! It was just – it was tricky. Listen, you're not allowed to say anything." ‌ Taylor and Matty, 36, first sparked a romantic relationship after she split from her long-term boyfriend, actor Joe Alwyn, back in April 2023. However, the relationship wasn't to last and now Taylor is with NFL star Travis Kelce, while Matty himself is now engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel. Despite not dating until 2023, Taylor and Matty actually first met years before. The two reportedly met when Taylor attended a 1975 show in Los Angeles in 2014. Then in 2022 rumors began circulating that Matty would be featured on Taylor's album Midnights. There was some truth to this as Matty said he has collaborated with Taylor on some music in the studio but it was never published in the end. However, their friendship stayed strong as Taylor went on to make a surprise appearance on stage at a 1975 concert. It's unknown whether the duo remain on friendly terms after their split.
