Choice Brew NZ IPA
Bailey Brewing Co
Bailey Brewing Co have been quietly building up their repertoire since opening in the Swan Valley a few years ago.
The family-friendly venue does a raging trade on weekends, and while their core range has become a staple in bottle shops across Perth, their limited releases are ones to watch out for.
The Choice Brew NZ IPA (see what they did there?) is one all discerning craft beer drinkers should add to their never-ending list of tinnies to crack.
The beer is a clever tip of the hat to our cross-Tasman neighbours — both in style and in name. Bailey Brewing Co's Choice Brew NZ IPA pours a golden amber hue with the slightest hint of haze. Credit: PerthNow
It pours a golden amber hue with the slightest hint of haze and a white creamy head.
On the nose you'll find some particularly sweet tropical aromas. Think mango, apricot and melon — and maybe even with the slightest amount of caramel.
But don't be fooled by the sweet aromas — this hop-laden tinnie (Nectron, Superdelic, and Motueka) is dank and bitter in the best way.
The sweet flavours take a back seat on the palate, with a heap of citrus, and plenty of dankness creating a flavour profile which is quite bitter.
Yet somehow this beer is smooth and balanced enough to fall short of feeling heavy and cumbersome.
Share it with your Kiwi mates — and maybe pair it with a nice serving of 'fush and chups' while you're at it.

Why major Perth freeway might be getting extended

Nearly 20 years since it was identified as a key strategic project 'essential for the future development of WA' by the former state government, work on upgrading the Orrong Road corridor has struggled to gain momentum, but progress is finally in sight. A community panel of about 50 local residents and stakeholders has delivered its final recommendations to Main Roads WA after spending several sessions evaluating possible solutions for the congested corridor. As part of the proposed Orrong Connect upgrade, the Graham Farmer Freeway would be extended in some form all the way to Leach Highway. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Currently, about 65,000 vehicles use the corridor daily, with congestion estimated to cost the local economy up to $49.5 million annually. An upgrade to Orrong Road was flagged in 2008 by the Barnett government alongside major infrastructure projects such as the Perth City Link and Gateway WA projects, both of which are now complete. Speaking to PerthNow, a Main Roads spokesperson said the business case for Orrong Connect is expected to be fully developed by early 2027, following a detailed review of the community panel's recommendations. 'The report provided by the Deliberative Panel for Orrong Road is currently being reviewed by Main Roads, including detailed assessment of the recommendations and consultation with key project stakeholders, ensuring an integrated, collaborative approach,' the spokesperson said. 'The review will assist in determining a preferred option, with next steps to include the creation of a business case for construction funding.' During these independently facilitated sessions, community panel members worked together to shape a plan aimed at 'improving safety, reducing congestion, and enhancing connectivity'. In 2019, Main Roads released an initial concept design showing plans to sink Orrong Road. Credit: Main Roads WA PerthNow requested a copy of the panel's report but Main Roads considers it premature to release the document while it is still being reviewed and assessed. Among the options expected to be considered is a sunken freeway running down the middle of Orrong Road, creating an open-air tunnel, a concept Main Roads WA first detailed six years ago. Although commuters shouldn't expect bulldozers on site anytime soon, some work is under way to improve pedestrian safety along Orrong Road. Electronic speed limit signs on the approach to the Orrong Road and Corser Street traffic warden-controlled children's crossing have recently been installed. 'Once commissioned (expected within the coming three weeks), a 40km/h speed limit will be active during school zone periods, enhancing pedestrian safety,' a Main Roads spokesperson said.

Air New Zealand adds major seat boost across short-haul routes from Australia for summer

A summer break to Aotearoa just got more accessible, with Air New Zealand adding close to 30 per cent more flights on its Perth-Auckland route. The airline has upped its capacity from October to March 2026 for short-haul routes across the Tasman and to the Pacific islands, with a total of 1.7 million seats ready to be filled. For the Perth-Auckland route alone, Air New Zealand is offering an extra 30,000 seats as it increases from seven to nine flights per week over the summer months. The boost from the largest trans-Tasman carrier also involves the deployment of more wide-body aircraft on key routes, 8 per cent more premium seats and enhanced availability to connect travellers from Auckland to the Pacific islands. Air New Zealand chief commercial officer Jeremy O'Brien says more aircraft are in service than ever before to meet demand from guests venturing across the ditch. 'This isn't just about flying more often. It's about giving our customers better options, more comfort, and more reasons to choose Air New Zealand,' Mr O'Brien says. 'We're expanding our premium offering and strengthening our network across the Tasman and onto the Pacific. 'Air New Zealand has a proud 85-year history of flying across the Tasman — our first flight to Sydney took off in 1940 and we're incredibly proud of that longevity. Our commitment to keeping Australians connected to Aotearoa is as strong as ever.'

Greek-inspired revamp for much-loved Cottesloe destination

A popular beach side store and cafe in Cottesloe has had a revamp which exudes Greek Mediterranean bliss as the new owner preps for summer. Cottesloe General Stores has a prime location on Marine Parade with sea views and easy access to the beach and has long been a go-to destination to grab a snack, beach essential or souvenir. Cottesloe local Voula Nelson came out of retirement to take over the store in early March and wanted to bring something new and fresh to the beachfront. 'Part of my motivation to come out of retirement was to give this historic business a brand new look and feel because being a local I felt like it needed some love' Mrs Nelson told Perth Now. The Mati has significant meaning in the Greek culture to ward off the evil eye and to my mind, it is a strongly recognised Greek symbol.' said Mrs Nelson. The renovation isn't just cosmetic, Mrs Nelson has introduced tasty Greek treats which lean into her heritage. Cottesloe General Stores revealed on their Instagram page that Spanakopita is a spinach and feta pastry, Tiropita is a creamy feta pastry and Bougatsa is a pastry with a soft semolina custard filling. Mrs Nelson is a hospitality veteren; she's worked for iconic Perth operators such as Kate Lamont and Nic Trimboli and this is her third Cottesloe business. 'Being a local it comes with a lot of good will but also great expectation. Big shout out to the beautiful people who I work with, they are just fabulous and we all love what we do' Mrs Nelson said. Cottesloe General Stores revealed their renovation in an Instagram post which was flooded with positive comments. 'Santorini vibes!! 🤍💙' one person commented. 'Love this clean fresh look. ❤️' another wrote.
