Staunch Reformasi activist Ezam wants cops to investigate PMX for power abuse, delaying CJ's appt
Former PKR Youth chief (1990-2007) Datuk Ezam Mohd Nor is the latest to do so by lodging a police report yesterday (July 8) which called on cops to open an investigation paper and arrest PMX over alleged abuse of power in the appointment of the new Chief Justice (CJ).
Ezam who has officially joined PAS in Sept 2024 contended that such action was necessary to avert a crisis involving an important national institution, namely the judiciary, with the mastermind holding the PM position.
'We feel that there is a sense of urgency here given there is a case involving the PM in court that has not yet been heard,' HarakahDaily cited him after filing a police report at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters (IPD) yesterday (July 7).
'We've reason to believe there's even abuse of power in connection to the PM's case involving a civil suit (on sexual assault) filed by an individual named Yusoff Rawther against him which has been postponed several times.
'This strengthens our belief that action must be taken immediately by the police.'
Also present were the Gerakan Pembela Ummah (UMMAH) chairman Mohd Zai Mustafa, Pertubuhan Pribumi Perkasa Malaysia (PERKASA) president Syed Hasan Syed Ali and the Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (GAMIS) president Mohammad Azamuddin Sahar.
'180-degree turn of heart'
Recall that former PKR deputy president and Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli had also on yesterday (July 8) led a team of nine PKR MPs (including himself) to break rank from their party by calling for the setting up of a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) to probe allege irregularities in the appointment of senior judges, including the CJ.
Elaborating farther, Ezam also insisted that PMX should also be prevented from discharging his PM duties given his presence in office could entail adverse implication to the country by virtue of the severity of his pending lawsuit.
'Anwar had faced a similar case which is abuse of power when he was deputy PM. He was charged with blackmailing witnesses in his sodomy case,' asserted Ezam who was the Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) deputy president prior to joining PAS.
That Ezam has openly opposed PMX has raised eyebrows given that the former PMX political secretary during his tenure as deputy PM had fiercely defended PMX by taking to the streets in the Federal capital to protest PMX's sacking by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
In his quest to staunchly defend PMX when the latter was jailed at the Sungai Buloh Prison on corruption and sodomy charges, Ezam himself was detained twice for almost three years at the Kamunting Detention Camp and Kajang Prison under the now repealed Internal Security Act (ISA) and Official Secrets Act 1972 (OSA).
Aside from yesterday's police report, PAS will be staging a rally in the Federal capital to call for the stepping down of PMX on July 26 . – July 8, 2025

Zahid apologises for ‘angel' remark, says it was emotionally-driven
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was seen in a viral video saying that even an angel would have fled if appointed Umno president during the party's most difficult times. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has apologised for a controversial remark he made in a recent speech, saying it was said in an emotional moment and might have caused confusion. In a video that has gone viral, Zahid is seen saying that even an angel would have fled if appointed Umno president during the party's most difficult times. 'The truth is, the statement came from a deeply emotional setting, as an attempt to describe how challenging the tests of leadership can be. 'However, I acknowledge that the comparison has created confusion and could be misinterpreted,' he said in a Facebook post. Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said he humbly sought forgiveness from Allah and apologised to everyone for what he said was a 'misstep' in his choice of words. 'As a Muslim and a leader of a party that upholds Islamic values, principles, and scholarly traditions, I sincerely seek forgiveness from Allah and apologise to all for this lapse. 'I accept all criticism with an open heart. I believe that a true leader is not only careful with his words, but also sincere in reflecting, improving, and learning from his mistakes,' he said. Earlier today, Harakahdaily quoted Kluang PAS chief Nor Mohamad as saying that Zahid's remark involving angels in the context of political leadership was 'excessive and inappropriate'. He said the statement should be examined seriously from the standpoint of Islamic creed and religious decorum. He also urged the relevant authorities, such as the Islamic development department and the National Fatwa Council, to review the remark and issue an official stance to prevent similar incidents in the future. Zahid made the original remarks while addressing delegates at the Sri Gading Umno division meeting in Batu Pahat over the weekend. Defending party loyalty, he said Umno had gone through immense trials in the past, including the seizure of party assets and the freezing of its accounts. 'I and many other leaders were tested. If an angel had been made Umno president at that time, perhaps even he would have fled in the night,' he had said.

Freedom of speech must not be misused for slander
KUALA LUMPUR: Every PKR member has the right to express their views, but this must be exercised with discipline and responsibility, without resorting to slander or defamatory remarks, said its vice president, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan. He said freedom of speech is a core strength of both the party and the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, but it must be practised ethically. "This is the strength and greatness of PKR and the current government, where everyone has the right to speak. But I want to remind everyone, do not spread slander. In Islam, slander is considered a sin worse than murder. "We have freedom of speech, but when it is misused to slander others, that freedom is lost. There is nothing wrong with voicing opinions, as long as they are based on facts and expressed with discipline," he said. He was speaking after officiating the launch of Changemakers IICS and a social entrepreneurship seminar organised by the Malaysian Entrepreneurship Institute here today. Present were the ministry's deputy secretary-general (policy and monitoring) Noor Afifah Abdul Razak, Insken's chief executive officer (CEO) Viviantie Sarjuni and Subang INTI International College CEO Dr Jane Lim. Ramanan, who is also Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister said PKR remains stable under the leadership of Anwar, who will continue to serve as the party's president and prime minister. "There will naturally be one or two individuals who voice their views. In politics, that is normal. So we must be open to everyone's perspectives," he added. Yesterday, nine PKR members of parliament called for a royal commission of inquiry to investigate what they claimed were alleged irregularities in the appointment of senior judges, including the Chief Justice. They also will formally request that proceedings and an inquiry be conducted by the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Human Rights, Elections and Institutional Reform, including top government officials to testify. Leading the group is Pandan MP and former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who said they would write officially to the Chairman of the Committee, William Leong and all committee members.

PKR members warned against abusing freedom of speech in party
SUBANG JAYA: PKR members have been cautioned against misusing their right to freedom of speech within the party. The warning came from PKR vice-president Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, who stressed the importance of ethical and responsible expression. Speaking to the media after launching The Changemakers at INTI International College Subang and a seminar by the National Entrepreneurship Institute (INSKEN), Ramanan emphasised that while freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it should not be exploited to spread falsehoods. 'This is the strength and greatness of PKR and the current government – that everyone has the right to speak. But I must remind you, do not resort to slander,' he said. Ramanan clarified that expressing opinions is acceptable as long as it is based on facts and conducted with discipline. He warned that freedom is lost when it is misused to defame others. The reminder follows recent concerns raised by a group of PKR MPs regarding the judiciary, including calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into alleged irregularities in judicial appointments. - Bernama
