Premier League to make major rule change after finally following UEFA
Premier League chiefs are set to make a major rule change that will mean only captains can approach referees starting next season, in a move that aligns the English top flight with UEFA. New guidelines from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) state that each team should only delegate one player to speak to an official during a match, with the captain the most obvious choice.
It comes amid concern over abuse towards referees in recent seasons and now measures have been implemented that will give officials more power and protection. They can tell any player not to approach them and issue a yellow card to any player that does so without permission.
If a goalkeeper is the captain of a team, clubs can nominate a secondary player to take on the responsibility of speaking to the match referee.
The new regulation is already active in all three UEFA club competitions this term after first being introduced during Euro 2024 last summer.
The rule change is set to be rubber-stamped at the Premier League's annual general meeting in June, ready to be officially brought in for the start of the 2025-26 season - though clubs are still being consulted at present.
An IFAB statement read: "At this stage, they are not a compulsory part of the Laws of the Game, although Ifab strongly recommends their adoption at all levels following their successful implementation by Uefa and various national FAs and competitions.
"Creating a captain-only zone will focus responsibility on the captain to encourage their team-mates to behave appropriately. The captain must take responsibility for helping ensure that their team-mates respect the captain-only zone."
The organisation previously said the rule would "prevent major confrontations" and "create a secure and calm zone around the referee, thus lessening intimidation of officials during tense moments.
In UEFA competitions, players have indicated the use of the guideline by extending one arm and showing the flat of their hand, but IFAB said there was no mandatory signal needed to implement the rule.
"This signal may be adopted by other competitions, but currently there is no mandatory signal at the highest levels of the game, as different countries may have varying views on what signal best suits their football environment," an IFAB spokesman continued.
There have already been trials to fit referees with bodycams in the event to ward off the threat of being approached by a player or a manager.
Liverpool boss Arne Slot got himself into hot water this season after his X-rated rant at Michael Oliver following his side's 2-2 draw against Everton. The Dutchman said to the official: "If we don't win the league I'll f***ing blame you", and was subsequently banned for two matches.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford is one of five players who have told the club they want to leave Old Trafford this summer, the PA news agency understands. It is understood Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have all informed United they see their futures lying elsewhere. United have responded by delaying their scheduled return for pre-season training until the end of July to allow them time to find new clubs. Should none of the players secure a new deal elsewhere before the end of the month, they will be welcomed back to Carrington, where they will continue to have full access to medical and training support. PA also understands summer signing Matheus Cunha will be given the number 10 shirt, which had been worn by Rashford, for next season and United have informed the England international's representatives of the decision. Rashford scored four goals in 17 appearances during his time at Villa Park, but the Midlands club decided not to activate the £40million option to buy him. The 27-year-old, who fell out of favour at United under head coach Ruben Amorim, is reportedly keen on a move to Barcelona and does not want a move to London, ruling out the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham. There is also reported interest from Germany, Italy and Saudi Arabia for the player, who has scored 17 goals in 62 appearances for England. Garnacho, who made his first-team debut for United as a 17-year-old in 2022 after joining from Atletico Madrid in 2020, has scored 16 goals in 93 Premier League appearances. But his relationship with Amorim has also deteriorated after he vented his frustration on social media following his omission from United's starting line-up in their Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. The Argentinian has been linked with both Chelsea and Italian champions Napoli. Antony failed to justify his huge price tag at Old Trafford after arriving from Ajax in an £82million deal in 2022, but he rediscovered top form after joining Real Betis on loan in January. Sancho has also endured a difficult spell at United following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021. His only appearance for United since his fall out with former boss Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023 came in the 2024 Community Shield against Manchester City. After spending last season on loan at Chelsea, the Londoners opted to pay a £5m fine rather than sign Sancho permanently for £25m. He has been reported to have held talks with Juventus.

Manchester United have decided to strip Marcus Rashford of the No.10 shirt and will give it to new summer signing Matheus Cunha. Cunha arrived as United's first signing of the summer transfer window following a £62.5million move from Wolves. George Ford looks ahead to winning 100th England cap
George Ford is not one for excessive sentiment so even the occasion of his 100th cap for England is just 'another day at the office'. And yet with his family having flown all the way to Argentina to watch him become only the eighth man to bring up three figures for England, it is the perfect time to appreciate one of the greats of the English game. A precocious talent who was playing senior rugby at just 16, Ford was crowned World Rugby Junior Player of the Year ahead of the likes of Sam Cane and Beauden Barrett while playing against players two years his senior in 2011. Little wonder that he has gone on to write his name into the record books. Even with the competition from his good friend Owen Farrell, and more recently the Smiths - Marcus and Fin, Ford has quietly gone about his business as one of the best playmakers the country has produced. He is still only 32, and even if his position in the hierarchy shifted during the Six Nations – playing just 24 minutes in Cardiff – he has no plans to make it 100 and out. Farrell's possible return could complicate matters but given his form at the end of the season for Sale, there is a case that Ford has never been better. As a leader for a young England side in La Plata, it is impossible to picture a better candidate, and unsurprisingly, his only focus is on celebrating with a victory. He said: 'Once selection is made and you know you're going to be getting out on the field at the weekend, it becomes a bit more real. It's an unbelievably proud moment for me, but more importantly my family. But the most important thing at the weekend is the team and having a really good performance and getting a good result.' The dream scenario would have been to bring up his 100th cap at Twickenham, back where he played the final minute of a win over Wales back in 2014 on debut. But there is something fitting about the fact his landmark moment will come in the compact environment of the Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi in La Plata. It is eight years since Ford last played in Argentina, again after being overlooked for Lions selection, and the football-like atmosphere of stadia in the land of steak and Malbec has not been forgotten. He said: 'I was a bit taken aback by it eight years ago when I first came over here. 'It is constant, up on their feet, singing, chanting, a football environment. It's an incredible atmosphere to play in. 'From what I can remember last time, I absolutely loved it. It was something that we had never experienced before as English players really. Coming to a country like this and going into one of those environments. It brought the best out of us and I think it could do in the next couple of weeks.
