Scientists find rare double-star system where one star orbited inside the other
Astronomers may have discovered a rare type of binary star system, where one star used to orbit inside its partner.
In the new study, astronomers investigated a pulsar known as PSR J1928+1815 located about 455 light-years from Earth. A pulsar is a kind of neutron star, a corpse of a large star that perished in a catastrophic explosion known as a supernova. The gravitational pull of the star's remains would have been strong enough to crush together protons and electrons to form neutrons, meaning a neutron star is mostly made of neutrons. That makes it very (very) dense.
Pulsars are spinning neutron stars that emit twin beams of radio waves from their magnetic poles. These beams appear to pulse because astronomers see them only when a pulsar pole is pointed at Earth. The researchers estimate this particular pulsar was born from a hot blue star more than eight times the sun's mass.
Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in China, the world's largest single-dish telescope, the astronomers discovered PSR J1928+1815 had a companion, a helium star with about 1 to 1.6 times the sun's mass. This star has lost most — or all — of its outer layers of hydrogen, leaving behind a core made up mostly of helium.
These stars in this pair are currently only about 700,000 miles (1.12 million kilometers) apart, or about 50 times closer than Mercury is to the sun, study co-author Jin-Lan Han, chair of the radio astronomy division of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, told Space.com. They complete an orbit around each other in just 3.6 hours.
PSR J1928+1815 is a millisecond pulsar, which means it whirls extraordinarily rapidly, spinning nearly 100 times a second. Millisecond pulsars typically reach these dizzying speeds as they cannibalize nearby companions — the inrushing material makes them gyrate faster and faster.
Previous research suggested that, as millisecond pulsars feed on their partners, these binary systems may experience a "common envelope" phase, in which the pulsar orbits within the outer layers of its companion. However, scientists have never detected such exotic binaries — perhaps until now.

Using computer models, the researchers suggest the members of this newfound binary started at a distance from each other about twice that between Earth and the sun (185 million miles, or 299 million km), Han said. The pulsar would have then started siphoning off its companion's outer layers, forming a common envelope around them both. After roughly 1,000 years, the pulsar would have spiraled close to its partner's core, which likely flung away the last of this envelope, leaving behind a tightly bound binary system.
Based on the estimated number of binary stars in the Milky Way that roughly match this newfound system, the researchers suggest only 16 to 84 counterparts of PSR J1928+1815 and its companion may exist in our galaxy. (For context, the Milky Way hosts about 100 billion to 400 billion stars.)
The scientists detailed their findings online May 22 in the journal Science.

On the rarest of occasions, galaxy clusters collide, creating an even more massive lens. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) recently provided extremely detailed observations of such a lens, the Bullet Cluster. Located about 3.7 billion light-years from Earth in the constellation Carina, the Bullet Cluster is the aftermath of the collision between two galaxy clusters that is estimated to have begun approximately 150 million years ago. Each of the two galaxy clusters can be distinguished within the blue regions, yet they are bound by gravity and together form a single entity — the Bullet Cluster. While gravitational lensing brings distant, faint objects into light, the extent of lensing can reveal the mass distribution within the massive foreground galaxy cluster. Mysterious dark matter makes up a huge chunk of galaxy clusters, but is difficult to spot because it does not reflect, absorb or emit light. So, astronomers sometimes study light from stars that are within the galaxy cluster but are not part of any galaxies. These stars are called intracluster stars and are floating because they are stripped from their galaxies during collisions. By analyzing the light from these stars, researchers can trace the distribution of dark matter, as these stars are gravitationally bound to the cluster's dark matter. The light from intracluster stars pinned down the location of invisible matter, and the X-rays confirmed the location of hot gas. Based on these observations, astronomers could "replay" the collision. This revealed that hot gas (in bright pink) was pulled out of the galaxy clusters and left behind in the central region, while the dark matter (in blue) associated with individual galaxy clusters stayed intact and was not dragged away. —6 incredible objects hidden in Vera C. These newfound structures could be signatures of a chaotic history, suggesting that the Bullet Cluster may have suffered several collisions over billions of years. The larger cluster, on the left side, might have undergone separate interactions before and after colliding with the smaller cluster on the right. This brilliant image covers only a portion of the collision's aftermath. In the future, the wide-area near-infrared images taken with NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope could provide a complete picture of the Bullet Cluster, both by unveiling spectacular photos and unraveling its mysteries. 'Jurassic World Rebirth' is roaring at the international box office, climbing to $171 million from 82 markets in its first weekend of release. New International Character Posters For THE FANTASTIC FOUR
Marvel Studios is rolling out The Fantastic Four: First Steps with a slick new batch of international character posters. With the film dropping day-and-date in China and the U.S. on July 25, the campaign is revving up. The posters showcase Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic), Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Johnny Storm (Human Torch), Ben Grimm (The Thing), and yes—H.E.R.B.I.E., the lovable robot that may very well become Disney's next merch juggernaut. Director Matt Shakman is aiming for something more personal and unified with this movie, placing the focus on the family at the core of the franchise. 'Casting was the number one challenge for the film. It wasn't just a search for who was the best Ben and who was the best Johnny, but also who was the best family? Who was the best married couple? Who were the best siblings and honorary uncle? So it's been very gratifying to see the incredible chemistry that the four of them have had since the beginning.' That chemistry will be tested by the cosmic threat of Galactus and the Silver Surfer, key characters at the heart of this new interpretation. But notably absent? Doctor Doom. 'Doom's a great character, but he takes up a lot of air,' Shakman explained. 'Other film adaptations have done both an origin story and Doom. We're doing neither, and that allows us to look at them from a fresh perspective.'
