Defence in cop's murder trial gets 6 weeks to file new submissions
PETALING JAYA : The defence in the murder trial of senior police officer Nazri Abdul Razak, who is accused of killing 17-year-old Zaharif Affendi Zamrie two years ago, has been given a new date to file its submissions.
Counsel M Athimulan told the Ipoh High Court that the defence needed to review its previous submissions to focus on another section under the Penal Code that the prosecution is focusing on, Bernama reported.
'Our submissions comprised both Section 300(c) and (d) of the Penal Code, but were more focused on Section 300(c). However, the prosecution's stand now is that they are relying on Section 300(d).
'This creates a need to revise our submissions. In view of that, we are seeking an adjournment to file this new submission, with the court's indulgence, in about six weeks,' he was quoted as saying.
Section 300(c) states that culpable homicide is deemed murder if 'done with the intention of causing bodily injury' and if that injury could cause a person's death 'in the ordinary cause of nature'.
Meanwhile, Section 300(d) states that it is murder if someone commits an act knowing that it is likely to cause death, even if there was no intention to kill.
Judge GSP Bhupindar Singh gave the defence six weeks to file the new submissions, with the prosecution allocated four weeks after that to respond.
He fixed Oct 1 and 2 for the full hearing of submissions.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutors Afzainizam Abdul Aziz and Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani, while the accused was represented by lawyers Athimulan, Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman.
Nazri is accused of causing the death of Zaharif, a student, at Jalan Taman Jati 1, near Meru, between 12.05pm and 12.40pm on Dec 15, 2023.
The deputy superintendent from the Kedah police contingent headquarters was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or up to 40 years in prison and at least 12 strokes of the rotan, upon conviction.

KUANTAN: A former information technology officer lost her savings and gratuity totalling RM180,789 after falling victim to a non-existent part-time job scam advertised on Facebook earlier this month. The 42-year-old woman was deceived into believing that she needed to invest a certain amount as capital to participate in the online job scheme but ended up losing all her money. Acting district police chief Superintendent Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the victim was told she only needed to work online from home and could earn lucrative returns. "She was instructed to log in and click on a system, and each time she completed a task, payments were supposedly credited to her account. "However, she was asked to make an initial payment to qualify for job assignments, and failure to do so would disqualify her from the position," he said in a statement today. The victim made 18 transactions totalling RM180,789 into 16 different bank accounts between July 6 and July 16, he said. Adli said the woman realised she had been scammed when the fraudsters continued pressuring her for more payments, despite her having completed several tasks and receiving no income. He said the victim lodged a police report today and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, whipping, and a fine.

Police's Special Branch holds anti-terrorism exhibition
BATU KAWAN: The police have brought an anti-terrorism exhibition to the National Unity Week at the Batu Kawan Stadium grounds, aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers of involvement in terrorist activities. Federal police Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division (E8) staff officer ACP Ridzuan Abdul Aziz said the exhibition is also intended to enhance public understanding of terrorism threats and the importance of community cooperation in countering such activities. "We are bringing the exhibition closer to the public to clearly explain what terrorism and extremism are, so people can understand and avoid involvement in such activities, which not only harm individuals but also the nation," he told Bernama at the event. He said that while the exhibition is rarely held, it was featured at the Batu Kawan SMP this time to showcase various items to the public, including homemade bombs made by terrorist groups, terrorism-related books and terrorist passports. The Unity Week, held at Batu Kawan Stadium, Penang, will run from July 17 to 20 and feature 35 engaging activities for visitors. "That is why we are presenting this exhibition, to prevent, especially young people, from falling prey to terrorist groups, as they are highly exposed to such content through social media. "These groups actively recruit through platforms like Telegram," he said. Ridzuan described the exhibition as part of a 'prevention through education' approach, targeting all segments of society, particularly youth and students. "We cannot rely on enforcement alone. "The public must be educated on how radical ideologies operate and how they recruit victims, particularly through social media platforms.
