A female prison officer who engaged in phone sex with an inmate has admitted to public misconduct and now faces jail time. Megann Gibson, who worked at HM Prison Wealstun in West Yorkshire, was attracted to the prisoner.
The 26-year-old visited the inmate at his resettlement housing, granted him access to restricted areas of the prison, and had sexual encounters with him during her employment.
To maintain their affair, she also sent over 900 messages to his mother when it seemed to be falling apart.
Gibson has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public service and faces imprisonment. She also admitted to possessing cannabis. Her sentencing is expected in August, according to The Telegraph.
The judge at Leeds Crown Court in West Yorkshire warned Gibson of a possible prison sentence. She was released on unconditional bail, but the judge stressed the seriousness of her offense. She has been suspended from her job at Wealstun, a Category C prison.
The charges state that Gibson had 'sexual communications via telephone" as part of an 'inappropriate relationship" with the inmate during her employment at HM Prison Wealstun.
Her defense attorney stated that she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from a past relationship and undergoing various mental health diagnoses.
Gibson is the latest female prison guard in the UK to be dismissed for an illegal relationship with an inmate.
In May, Isabelle Dale, 23, was charged for having sex with two inmates and conspiring to smuggle drugs into the high-security prison in Kent, Southeast London.
Another prison guard, Toni Cole, was sentenced to one year in prison after admitting to an 'inappropriate" affair with a 28-year-old inmate at HMP Five Wells in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.
According to the New York Post, at least 29 female prison guards in the UK have been terminated for inappropriate interactions with inmates in the last three years.

6-Year-Old British Boy Detained In Rs 18.8 Crore Drug Bust In Mauritius

A six-year-old British boy was detained in Mauritius after customs officials found 14 kilograms of cannabis hidden inside his suitcase. According to The Telegraph, the child was detained alongside seven other people at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport on Sunday. The group was reportedly carrying more than 161 kilograms of cannabis, worth 1.6 million pounds (approximately Rs 18.8 crore), hidden in the luggage. Seven of the suspects were British, including the boy whose luggage contained 24 packages of drugs wrapped in clear cellophane. The group was stopped at the main international airport in Mauritius as they disembarked from a British Airways flight from Gatwick, per the outlet. The boy's mother was also arrested and had 17kg hidden in her own bags. The eighth suspect was reported to be a Romanian living in Britain. He was allegedly holding 32 packages of cannabis. Mauritian authorities described the use of a child to transport drugs as "outrageous and inhumane", adding, "This is one of the most revolting cases we have encountered in recent years". The boy was unaware of the contents of his bags. He was flown back to the UK on Wednesday and is staying with his father. Authorities discovered 11 Apple AirTags, suggesting links to a drug gang. The drugs cache was found during a joint operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS) and the Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (ADSU) at the airport. Officials are treating the group as part of an organised crime network responsible for smuggling drugs from Europe to Mauritius. The seven suspects, 5 women and 2 men, have been charged with drug trafficking and placed in custody. They appeared at Mahebourg court on the island's south-eastern coast on Monday, with all remaining in pre-trial detention. Authorities also carried out a series of targeted raids on hotels containing British nationals after police received a lead that more foreign passengers may have been transporting drugs. No arrests were made at any of the three locations searched. According to The Sun, a spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office said, "We are supporting several British nationals who are detained in Mauritius and are in contact with the local authorities."

Iran moves women prisoners to hellhole farm jail after airstrike hits notorious Evin prison

After an Israeli airstrike damaged Iran's infamous Evin prison, authorities moved dozens of female inmates to Qarchak, a detention center described by prisoners and rights groups as one of the worst places to be locked up in the country, as per a report. Iran Shifts Women Prisoners to Qarchak After Evin Airstrike The missiles struck Evin on Monday morning, just one day before Iran and Israel agreed to a ceasefire, ending their 12-day conflict, as reported by The Telegraph. The prison, long associated with political repression, houses activists, dissidents, and others jailed for challenging the regime, according to the report. Iran's judiciary claimed that the transfers were conducted to 'respect prisoners' rights' and 'provide better services," as quoted in The Telegraph report. Women were handcuffed and sent to Qarchak, a former livestock facility located 40 miles south of Tehran, according to The Telegraph report. The prison is already under US sanctions for its record of human rights violations, including torture and extrajudicial killings, as reported by The Telegraph. She said, 'The American and Israeli bombing didn't kill us, but the Islamic Republic has brought us to a place where it's practically killing us,' adding, 'They've brought us to a place where humans don't live. It's a gradual death,' as quoted by The Telegraph. Seydal said that she and other women were crammed into a quarantine ward with no privacy or sanitation, calling it "a real hellhole,' according to the report. She shared that, 'The toilets are like outdoor latrines. The showers? Like outdoor showers. The stench of filth has taken over everywhere. Even the water – the water you splash on your face – is salty. The food? It absolutely cannot be eaten. A terrible situation," as quoted in the report. Seydal pointed out that 'The Islamic Republic has brought us to a place where it seems they want to get revenge for Israel and America and just kill us off easily,' quoted The Telegraph. No Windows, No Clean Water, No Dignity Human rights groups have also highlighted the horrible condition of Qarchak, as it does not follow the prison standards, like there is no proper sewage system or access to clean water, as per the report. There are also no windows, and when the iron gates to outdoor areas close at 5pm, inmates stare at walls with only two small holes, 'the size of lentils,' for glimpses of the sky, as reported by The Telegraph. Medical Care is Almost Nonexistent Activists have also revealed that the detention centre is infested with cockroaches, rats, salamanders, lizards, water bugs and venomous tarantulas, according to the report. Qarchak's medical care is also very limited, as just five prisoners per ward are allowed daily medical visits, and while prison authorities claim budget constraints prevent the provision of essential medications, they freely distribute sleeping pills and tranquillisers to keep prisoners sedated, as reported by the Telegraph. FAQs Why were the women moved from Evin prison? After an Israeli airstrike hit Evin, authorities transferred prisoners for safety reasons, but women were sent to Qarchak, a far worse facility. What is Qarchak prison like? It used to be a livestock farm. Now, it's overcrowded, unsanitary, and infested with insects and rodents. Many say it's unfit for humans, as per the report.

'Spraying a large amount of gasoline on a subway used by an unspecified number of passengers and then setting it on fire, causing a large-scale fire and spreading toxic gases, is an act of murder tantamount to terrorism,' prosecutors said, reported New York Post. 'If the evacuation had been delayed, the possibility of casualties would have been very high,' the prosecutors added. Reportedly, six people were injured in the incident. Many, including the suspect, were treated for smoke inhalation following the fire. The 67-year-old suspect had been charged with attempted murder and arson.
