KMRL submits feasibility study report for Water Metro project in Mumbai
Modelled on the lines of the Kochi Water Metro project, the report would cover the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The proposed project envisions connecting various waterbodies including Vaitarna, Vasai, Manori, Thane, Panvel, and Karanja creeks, effectively covering the entire MMR. It outlines a 250-kilometre waterway network with 29 terminals and 10 routes, says a KMRL release.
The feasibility study was presented at a high-level meeting chaired by Mr. Rane in Mumbai. The KMRL team was led by Chief General Manager Shaji P. Janardhanan, Senior Deputy General Manager Nishanth N. and Manager Arjun Krishna K.

Kochi canal rejuvenation project gains momentum
KOCHI: Kochi Mayor M Anilkumar on Friday said the canal rejuvenation programme started under the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System (IURWTS) project is gaining momentum. The Rs 3,716 crore project includes revitalisation of six major canals in Kochi, inland transportation and tourism. 'The project aims to strengthen water transport systems, construct attractive landscaping and walkways along canal banks, improve water quality by removing accumulated waste in the canals, make water flow smooth, and protect the aquatic ecosystem,' Anilkumar said. The Rs 8.4-crore project prepared for the cleaning of Chilavannur canal is set to be launched, he said, adding that the plan for the beautification of the banks of the Chilavannur canal has been submitted for KIIFB approval. 'The plan is to create a walkway and beautiful public spaces along the banks. The stream flowing from the international stadium joins the Chilavannur stream. The Chettichira bridge on Subhash Chandra Bose Road is very narrow, and thus Rs 4.51 crore has been spent on its reconstruction,' he said. The Kochi corporation and the Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) have also decided to organise a meeting on the project. It will be attended by Industries Minister P Rajeeve and other people's representatives.

The Vadhavan Port will be a game changer as it will connect 24 districts through Samruddhi Mahamarg, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday. The CM made these observations after inaugurating the Maharashtra Maritime Summit held in Mumbai to discuss and debate ideas to further strengthen the state's maritime sector. The summit began with Nitesh Rane, Minister for Ports and Fisheries, outlining his vision and roadmap for developing the state's ports, equipping the youth with necessary skills to qualify for jobs that will be created with this development. 'The formation of the Maritime Acceleration Task Force will help take forward the various initiatives, ' Rane said. Earlier, Fadnavis explained the benefits that infrastructure developed, and the upcoming Vadhavan Port will bring to Maharashtra. 'The Vadhavan Port, when ready, will be connected to 24 districts of the state via the Samruddhi highway and various access roads. The port will also have an offshore airport to accelerate the movement of cargo,' he said. The various panels, with experts from the maritime business, debated the benefits of bringing ship building and ship breaking industries to Maharashtra, the state's maritime policy and the future of water transport using the waterways. The panelists discussed the potential that Maharashtra holds with Indian shipbuilders looking outside the country for collaboration in technology and foreign companies looking for opportunities in India. Panelists included representatives from leading players in the business–Adani Ports, Damen Shipyards, Haskoning, Thyssenkrup Marines Systems, JSW Infra, DP World, Rural Enhancers Group, Indigo Seaways and Candela. Diplomats of various countries attended the summit, showcasing the international interest in forging business ties with Maharashtra. The political leaders reiterated Maharashtra 's commitment to developing the maritime sector. While Minister Rane urged various stakeholders to collaborate, Chief Minister Fadnavis assured the speakers that their deliberations would be seriously considered in the state's maritime policies.

Minister steps in to end Sassoon Dock standoff
MUMBAI: The city's fishing community, and everyone else employed in the seafood supply chain, heaved a collective sigh of relief on Monday, with the state government promising that the deadlock over warehouse rentals at Sassoon Dock would be worked out. (Photo by Anshuman Poyrekar/ Hindustan Times) (Hindustan Times) State fisheries and ports development minister, Nitesh Rane, said in the legislative council on Monday that the state government is working with the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) and the Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation (MFDC) to resolve the dispute. 'I have spoken to fishermen and the Mumbai Port Authority, and will also speak to the central government. We will find a way out of the impasse over the dues,' Rane said. 'The fishing community will not be evicted (from the dock). I will assure fishermen agitating at Azad Maidan that we will find a solution,'' he added. A crisis arose after MbPA, which owns 60 warehouses or godowns at Sassoon Dock in Colaba, recently threatened to shut these facilities if it did not receive rentals at par with Ready Reckoner rates. On June 28 and July 8, HT reported on the MbPA ultimatum, which gave the fishing community two weeks to comply. The warehouses are used as processing centres for the daily catch that lands at the dock from fishing trawlers, as well as other small ports in and around Mumbai. If the warehouses were to shut, the entire seafood supply chain, which includes the supply of fish to the city and beyond would collapse. In the legislative council on Monday, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Sachin Ahir drew attention to the long-drawn rent dispute, which goes back more than 30 years. He said that in 2014, MbPA had asked godown operators to vacate the premises but backed down after a 2015 meeting with then ministers Eknath Khadse and Nitin Gadkari, who worked out an agreement to protect the fishing industry through a tripartite arrangement. 'If seafood suppliers, godown operators and fisher folk are displaced, new facilities in the name of development would serve no purpose,' he said, in an oblique reference to allegations that the warehouses were sought to be used in ways that would generate more revenue for the port authorities. Responding to Ahir, Rane clarified in the legislative council, 'The development at Sassoon Dock aims to enhance infrastructure and boost seafood production. We do not intend to relocate the community to Vasai and Virar, like mill workers were in the past. These are poor fishermen who cannot afford rents based on current Ready Reckoner rates.' Rane said discussions are ongoing with the central government and MbPA to waive heavy dues. 'I assure the house that the state government will safeguard the interests of the fishing community without imposing penalties. A resolution will be reached.' Krishna Pawle, president of the Shiv Bharatiya Port Sena said, 'The most important issue is the dues and it was said that the dispute is between the tenants and the landlord, and the outstanding dues based on Ready Reckoner rates cannot be paid by fishermen. So, the state government will look at means to waive it or find a way out. The only thing is the decision taken in 2015 on tripartite agreement between MbPA, MFDC and godown pre-processors so that Ready Reckoner rates won't be applicable to them as it is a seasonal business.' The impasse at Sassoon Dock was originally raised by Congress MLA Rajesh Rathod, who said that women cleaning fish did not have rest rooms at the dock. Rane, in reply, said the government would provide basic facilities and also request other government agencies to open a crèche at the dock. NCP MLA Shivai Garje drew attention to the waste that collects due to the processing of seafood at the warehouses and dock. 'When children go to school in the morning, they cover their noses. I want some solution,'' Garje said. Replying to this, Rane said that the waste too would be processed. 'We are talking to some companies to process it, so that it is picked up.'
