The Rimrock has one last splash before closing for renos

Yahoo23-05-2025
It's closing – temporarily – on a high note.
The Rimrock Banff just hosted the world's top money minds at the prestigious G7 finance ministers meeting. Now it opens the vault for what's being termed a 'historic transformation.' No details of what that comprises are being released. Just that the hotel overlooking the valley on Sulphur Mountain will close in early October and reopen in spring.
Until it closes, though, guests or visitors can savour a series of farewell experiences, including The Grande Finale Tasting Menu in its signature restaurant, which includes guest favourites and chef masterpieces from Eden's 30-year history. The six-course meal with wine pairing includes such delicacies as king crab in lobster bisque, sablefish with smoked olives, Alberta tenderloin with huckleberries and port wine jus, and Hokkaido cheese tart with hickory and smoked maple.
Guests can book stays through Oct. 1 at rimrockresort.com, but no reservations will be taken during the renovation closure.
The Rimrock's history dates back to 1888 when a hot spring was discovered nearby, leading to the creation of Banff National Park. An astute businessman opened a small, six-room hotel on the property where the Rimrock stands today. Over the years, there have been various incarnations, with a 60-room Rimrock Hotel built in 1959. That was sold in 1988, additions were added, and the Rimrock Resort Hotel opened in 1993 with more than 300 rooms and suites. It was acquired in 2023 by Oxford Properties and Accor Group, which also owns Fairmont.

Trump planning to host G20 world leaders summit at his Doral resort, source says

President Donald Trump plans on bringing 20 of the most powerful world leaders to South Florida next year, along with an assembly of aides, a multitude of security personnel and millions in revenue for Miami. A formal announcement that the G20 summit, a meeting of the world's largest economies, will be held at the Trump National Doral golf course next year is in the works, a White House official told McClatchy. Aides are still finalizing logistics and dates, along with choosing the official logo for the summit. Bloomberg first reported the news. The United States holds the G20's presidency in 2026 — a position that rotates among the 19 participating countries and the European Union. While hosting the summit is a mark of prestige, it's also expected to be disruptive to Miami given the security needs, which will include road closures; state, federal and local law enforcement; and emergency responders. Brazil, which hosted the G20 in 2024, spent $60 million on security for the event, according to local reports. But there will be economic benefits. Local restaurants and hotels can expect to see a boost in revenue. When Pittsburgh hosted the G20 in 2009, the city brought in $35 million in hotel bookings and restaurant bills, per a study from the University of Toronto. Toronto saw an extra $100 million in its coffers when it hosted the G20 a year later. For the 2026 summit, the State Department put out a request for host city bids earlier this year. It was not immediately clear if the city of Doral submitted a formal bid. The proposal asked for a letter from the mayor, details on meeting rooms and an essay on 'why your city would be the ideal location for the G20 meeting.' While the main event is the world leader gathering, which is typically in November, before the Thanksgiving holiday, various officials on the minister level meet in the months beforehand. Ultimately, the decision on where to host the summit lies in the hands of the president. And Trump National Doral has the facilities for it, including 100,000 square feet of meeting space, according to the club's website, along with private cabanas and the Crystal Ballroom. It's not the first time Trump has turned to one of his private properties for his official needs. He's also faced criticism for personally profiting off the presidency. The White House was quick to push back against any suggestion Trump would profit off the G20. 'I would reject that premise entirely,' press secretary Karoline Leavitt told McClatchy when asked about it in Thursday's press briefing. During his first term, in 2020, Trump wanted to host the G7 at his Doral course. He faced enormous pushback and accusations of personal profit. He finally capitulated and moved the event to Camp David. Ultimately, the gathering was sidelined by the coronovirus pandemic. The leaders ended up meeting virtually. Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has hosted foreign leaders at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach and his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. But he's shown little interest in traveling abroad to meet his fellow statesmen. In June, he left the G7 meeting in Canada early, citing the conflict in the Middle East. And he's signaled he won't attend this year's G20 meeting, which is in South Africa. Trump has expressed his disapproval of that country's land policies, arguing they discriminate against white farmers. 'I think maybe I'll send someone else,' he told reporters on Air Force One Tuesday when asked about attending. 'I've had a lot of problems with South Africa. They have some very bad policies.'

North Korea Openly Defies Sanctions With Help From China

North Korean oil tankers blacklisted by the United Nations have been transmitting their locations while operating in Chinese waters, openly flouting sanctions against the illicit transfer of energy to Kim Jong Un's regime and despite U.N. resolutions requiring Beijing to seize and inspect the ships. In an investigative report released on Thursday, the specialist outlet NK Pro said data from ship-tracking service MarineTraffic found at least five North Korean tankers had entered Chinese waters in July. Four were under U.N sanctions. A Newsweek map captured their partial tracks utilizing self-reported signal data captured by MarineTraffic and Global Fishing Watch. The Chinese Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment after hours. North Korea is not banned from importing oil but faces a U.N.-imposed 500,000-barrel cap per year. Countries must report any shipments of fuel to the international body. Russia faces restrictions on its oil exports including a G7-imposed cap, which Moscow has circumvented this with a sanctions-busting shadow fleet. The data indicates North Korean vessels were getting oil from Russia's Far East, too, and will continue to get the commodity under the protection of its closest allies, Beijing and Moscow, thus undermining the sanctions regime. NK Pro said the five North Korean tankers likely sailed to Chinese waters to pick up fuel. They included the U.N.-sanctioned ships Song Won 2, An San 1, Kum Jin Gang 3 and Sin Phyong 9. The latter three had also frequented an oil pier at Russia's Vostochny Port, in the far-eastern Primorsky region, which is the main hub for North Korean fuel runs, the outlet said. The fifth vessel, the Chong Ryong San, is not sanctioned but is suspected of transporting petroleum products to North Korea's main port of Nampho and conducting illicit ship-to-ship transfers, according to a U.N. report. All four blacklisted vessels had broadcast their locations this month off eastern or southeastern China, near the reports of Zhoushan, Taizhou and Fujian. It was a sign that China was following Russia in rejecting sanctions against North Korea, said Neil Watts, a sanctions specialist and former member of the U.N. Panel of Experts on Pyongyang. Between March and November 2024, Russia supplied North Korea with over a million barrels of oil, or twice the U.N.-imposed limit, likely in payment for military support, according to the BBC, citing satellite data from the U.K.-based Open Source Center. Neil Watts, former member of the U.N. Panel of Experts: "The freer movements of North Korean vessels over the last two years, since the start of the war in Ukraine, suggest that China is following Russia in dismissing sanctions against North Korea." The North Korean tanker movements show Beijing's reluctance to enforce U.N. resolutions barring them from entering foreign ports, according to Watts, who added that such "brazen movements" are likely to continue as they see themselves untouchable under Russian and Chinese protection.
