‘Entire village ganged up to finish a family': Police arrest three of 23 named in FIR for Bihar ‘witchcraft' murders
Those killed were identified as daily wager Babulal Oraon (65), his wife Sita Devi (60) who was suspected of practising the witchcraft, their son Manjeet Kunar (25) and daughter-in-law Rani Devi (22) and Babulal's mother Kato Devi (82).
The incident took place in Tetgama village under Mufassil police station, barely 15 km from Purnia town. The village is dominated by Oraon and other tribal community families.
Police have arrested fellow-villagers Mukul Oraon, Chhotu Oraon and Sanaullah from among the 23 named in the FIR, which also mentions a mob of around 150 unidentified people. 'At least five children have died in the last one-and-half years and the villagers suspected it was due to the witchcraft practised by Sita Devi,' said a villager on condition of anonymity. The village looks deserted as almost all inhabitants have fled since the crime came to the fore.
Narrating the incident, Babulal's brother Jitendra Oraon said: 'In a village of 21 tribal families, members of 18 families targeted three of ours with blunt objects. After the assault, they torched our houses. While we escaped, Babulal's entire family minus a boy got trapped in the fire and died.' He said people from neighbouring settlements did not come to their rescue.
Another villager alleged how Sanaullah, who lives near the village, had 'provided his tractor to other accused to remove bodies of the victims from the spot for Rs 40,000'.
Raghunath Oraon of neighbouring Dargah Tola of Raziganj panchayat said: 'By the time neighbouring villagers came to know about the incident, all bodies had been removed.' The police on Monday recovered bodies from a field 2 km from the village.
Purnia District Magistrate Anshul Kumar, who reached the spot on Tuesday, said: 'This incident is the result of superstition among the people. This shows that we need to work on the lack of literacy and awareness in these tribal pockets.'
Purnia Sadar Sub-Division Police Officer Pankaj Kumar Sharma said: 'Our investigation so far has revealed that the incident was triggered by a dispute over traditional healing practices or alleged witchcraft. The family of Babulal Oraon, who practiced such rituals, is believed to have been targeted after a child from Ramdev Oraon's family died three days ago and another fell ill. It seems this may have led to the attack.'

He Refused Her Touch On Wedding Night. The Bride Uncovered His Secret - And Paid For It
Last Updated: The bride says she discovered her husband's impotence on their wedding night, and has accused her in-laws of dowry torture and attempted murder What should have been the beginning of a joyful new chapter turned into a night of shock and heartbreak for a newlywed bride. After the wedding, she waited with hope and affection for her husband to join her. When he finally entered the room, she welcomed him with warmth, expecting love and companionship. But the mood changed abruptly. As she gently reached for his hand, he recoiled in anger. Confused and hurt, she soon came to a painful realisation: her husband was hiding that he was impotent. This unsettling incident occurred in Kanpur, where a woman has now publicly accused her husband of impotence and claims she was deceived into the marriage for dowry. According to the bride, her in-laws were fully aware of the groom's condition yet went ahead with the marriage. When she objected, they not only dismissed her concerns but also allegedly subjected her to physical abuse. The Shocking Discovery And Demand For Money The woman, originally from Rawatpur, was married in March 2024 to a man from Unnao. On their wedding night, she found out about his condition. The next morning, she told her elder sister-in-law, who brushed it off as a joke. When she brought it up again, her in-laws began mistreating her and admitted they had known all along. They reportedly said the marriage was only to extract dowry. When she suggested medical treatment for her husband, they demanded Rs 2 lakh from her. She stayed on, hoping things would improve. Soon, her elder brother-in-law began harassing her. When she resisted, she was beaten severely. Matters escalated when, during a meeting with her parents, there was an alleged attempt to hang her, apparently an effort to silence her permanently. Legal Action Taken Following her formal complaint, a police case has been registered against the husband, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law under serious criminal sections. Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and appropriate action will be taken. view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 09:04 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. The first bench of Chief Justice K R Shriram and Justice Sunder Mohan issued the orders summoning the commissioner when Additional Advocate General J Ravindran mentioned about the previous day's order imposing Rs 1 lakh costs on the commissioner and requested to keep the order in abeyance. The bench questioned why the commissioner did not appear when the contempt case came up for hearing on Tuesday and asked whether the officer thinks he is above the court only because he is an IAS officer. The contempt petition was filed by N Rukmangathan, a former councillor, seeking action against the commissioner for wilful disobedience of an order passed in 2022.
