The popular eatery has won numerous awards over the years.
Friday, June 6 marks National Fish and Chip Day. As the name suggests, the annual holiday is all about celebrating fish and chips.
There is no wrong time of year to enjoy a fish supper. However, with National Fish and Chip Day falling at the start of summer, now seems like the perfect opportunity to enjoy a quality takeaway.

Unsurprisingly, you have plenty of options when it comes to chippies in Scotland. Whether you live in a tiny village or a major city, there likely won't be a fish and chip shop too far away.

However, if you are looking to truly celebrate National Fish and Chip Day in style, there are a few takeaways that are a cut above the rest. The Daily Record recently rounded up 10 of the best fish and chip shops across Scotland perfect for a summer chippy.
One chippy that combines top-quality food and spectacular surroundings is the Anstruther Fish Bar. Situated in the lovely fishing village of Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife, the eatery makes for a great day-trip destination.
The Anstruther Fish Bar is a family-owned business that has long delighted both locals and holidaymakers. All of its seafood is locally caught and landed, while every dish is freshly prepared to order.
The chippy serves up a wide selection of fish, including haddock, lemon sole, and hake. Also available are Pittenweem prawns and a 'Catch of the Day'.
According to the Anstruther Fish Bar website, its light and crispy batter comes from a "secret recipe". The eatery claims that only four fryers know the method.

Additionally, customers can also enjoy various chippy classics such as sausages in batter, haggis, and beef steak pie. Also available are pizzas, burgers, and even curry.
The restaurant and takeaway offers both indoor and outdoor seating. When the sun is shining, its outside area is the perfect spot to soak in the stunning coastal views while eating.

Over the years, the Anstruther Fish Bar has won a large number of awards. These include the Seafish Fish and Chip Shop of the Year, Food Awards Scotland's Takeaway of the Year Award, and Scottish Fish & Chip Awards' People's Choice Award.
In addition to its numerous accolades, the Anstruther Fish Bar has earned highly positive feedback from customers. At the moment, the chippy has an overall rating of 4.5 out of five on Google based on 7,262 reviews.
One recent visitor shared: "Excellent food freshly cooked to order. Busy restaurant and takeaway but worth it.

"Very friendly staff. Will be back when in the area again. Keep up the good work."
Another posted: "Absolutely incredible. Best chippy I've ever had.

"They say original is best and that shines through with this chippy. Perfectly crispy batter and perfectly cooked fish.
"Chips were done really well, and the curry sauce was phenomenal.
"We sat outside on the flat granite stones outside which absorb a bit of the sun so very nice. Seating options outside and a ramp for wheelchair users inside."

Million DWP claimants may need to report change if going abroad

More than one million people across the Britain are currently claiming the Department for Work and Pensions benefit With summer upon us, countless Brits will be jetting off on holiday to soak up some much-deserved sunshine. Nevertheless, those receiving Carer's Allowance must remember to notify authorities of any changes to their circumstances where relevant. ‌ Current government estimates indicate that around 1.439 million people throughout Great Britain are presently receiving a Carer's Allowance. This Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit provides £83.30 weekly and aims to assist those caring for someone for a minimum of 35 hours each week. ‌ Whilst recipients don't need to declare a change in circumstances for a day away, they must do so for extended overseas trips. The Daily Record reports that this particularly applies to foreign travel exceeding four weeks within a six-month timeframe. ‌ This means anyone planning several international getaways between now and the end of the year must verify that their dates meet guidance. Its current guidelines state: "Tell the office that pays your benefit if you plan to go abroad for more than four weeks. "You can carry on claiming Carer's Allowance if you take up to four weeks holiday out of a 26-week period." Despite this, additional guidance from Independent Age suggests that when temporarily travelling overseas with the person you care for, and they receive particular benefits including Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Adult Disability Payment, Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Attendance Allowance, the permitted duration may be longer. ‌ The guidance also indicates that if you move to a country within the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you may be able to continue receiving payments or make a new claim. More information can be found on here. Other changes in circumstances you may need to report Benefits claimants are required to inform the government of any relevant changes in their circumstances. As per the government's website, these may also include: Going into hospital, a care home or sheltered accommodation Any changes to your medical condition or disability Changing your doctor Changes to your pension, savings, investments or property Changes to other money you get (for example student loans or grants, sick pay or money you get from a charity) Changes to the benefits you or anyone else in your house gets You or your partner getting back-pay (sometimes called 'arrears') for salary or earnings you're owed Changes to your immigration status, if you're not a British citizen Changing your name or gender Finding or finishing a job, or working different hours Your income going up or down Starting or stopping education, training or an apprenticeship Moving house People moving into or out of the place you live (for example your partner, a child or lodger) The death of your partner or someone you live with Having a baby Starting or stopping caring for someone Getting married or divorced Starting or ending a civil partnership Planning to go abroad for any length of time

Seaside fish and chip shops in North Wales among UK's best

The experts at The Times have come up with a list of the UK's best spots for seaside fish and chips. Introducing the list, The Times said: "If there's one business that stands the test of time in this country, it's the chippy. From 1940s-style restaurants to fishermen-founded takeaways on the harbour arm, our writer picks the top places to refuel on the coast — from Norfolk to Dorsethttps:// "Some of the spots on this list have been in the same family for three or four generations and none of them shows signs of slowing, casting the net beyond the family tree, or shifting their focus to poke bowls. "Sure, there's a mackerel bap here, a tempura prawn there, but the traditional fish supper has our hearts. "And how you order is a personal matter that we would never attempt to steer you on — perhaps you can't do without a chip butty, a black pudding fritter or a pot of homemade tartare. "However you like yours, one thing's for sure, fish and chips taste best with a little sea spray on your cheeks, the mewing threat of seagulls overhead, a blob of ketchup in the box." The best spots in the UK for fish and chips by the sea, according to The Times, are: Finney's in Benllech is an award-winning fish and chip shop having won the Environment and Sustainable Business award at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2025. The Anglesey-based chippy was also shortlisted for the Takeaway of the Year Award. This isn't the first time the Benllech-based chippy has been amongst the UK's best as part of the National Fish and Chip Awards. In 2024, Finney's (Benllech) made the: Finney's is an extremely popular chippy, according to The Times, attracting customers "in droves". The news outlet said: "The giant arrow billboards and adjoining road and car park might make this chippy look like an in-and-out car wash, but that simply shows how Finney's must manoeuvre its customers who come — in their droves — for click-and-collect fish suppers. "Once you're armed with your haddock — which is battered in a coating perfected over the years to be naturally gluten-free — take it down to the beach, within view. "The onion rings, coleslaw and tartare sauce are all homemade (as is the chicken curry) so don't scrimp on sides." Finney's Fish & Chips Benllech also comes highly recommended by customers on Tripadvisor, boasting a 4.2 (out of 5) rating from 69 reviews. The Anglesey-based fish and chip shop has been described by visitors as "the best", "10/10" and "a must visit when in North Wales". Les and Rita's Fish Bar first opened in Rhyl around 55 years ago, and the "modern art" on the walls "does little to change the impression that you've gone back to the Swinging Sixties". The Times added: "To take away is to miss a trick here. "Instead, pick a booth — made from real vinyl and genuine Formica — and order a sit-down supper of fish, chips, mushy peas and bread that is neither artisan nor sourdough." The chippy, which is now run by Les and Rita's daughter, Kay, is located on Wellington Street, just a 10-minute walk from the promenade. Les and Rita's Fish Bar is also a popular option among customers, with it scoring a 4.5 rating (from 480 reviews) on Tripadvisor. One visitor, describing the Rhyl-based fish and chip shop as "the best ever", said: "I've been coming to les and Rita's chips shop for many years the staff are always nice and friendly and the fish and chips with peas is just amazing and very reasonably priced .. keep up the excellent work and see you again very soon." The Mermaid, located in Barmouth, was commended by The Times for its combo of fish, chips and tea. A post shared by The Mermaid Fish Bar Barmouth (@themermaidfishbar) The news outlet explained: "What beverage pairs best with fish and chips? Champagne? An unoaked chardonnay? A pint of bitter? "All are good, but none beats a mug of tea. "In most chippies that's a teabag on a string in a polystyrene cup, but at the Mermaid (established 1964) it comes out of a metal pot, strong and slightly overstewed — the perfect accompaniment to a crunchy fillet of battered cod and crisp yet fluffy chips." The Mermaid has also been described as having the "best Fish & Chips in the UK" by customers on Tripadvisor, where it has a 4.4 rating from 1,159 reviews. Five Scottish swimming pools and lidos to head to this weekend as weather heats up

We have rounded up some of the best spots in Scotland for an outdoor swim. This weekend is set to bring sizzling temperatures across Scotland. With highs of 30 degrees Celsius predicted in parts of the country, it might be a record-breaking few days of weather. There comes a point when the heat can get too much and start to become uncomfortable. If there was ever a weekend to go for a swim, this is it. ‌ All over the country, there are indoor pools where Scots can head to cool down. There is also no shortage of picturesque beaches where you can dip your toes in the water. ‌ However, if you are after something a bit different, Scotland is also home to a number of lidos and outdoor swimming pools. These are perfect if you still want to make the most of the good weather while also taking advantage of the fun that swimming pools bring. To help keep cool, The Daily Record has rounded up five of these outdoor swimming spots around Scotland. From Fife to Wick, you won't be too far from at least one of them. Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool, Stonehaven The Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool is one of the most popular and renowned outdoor swimming pools in Scotland, and for good reason. Situated in the coastal Aberdeenshire town of Stonehaven, the attraction is the only art deco Olympic-sized seawater lido in the UK. The pool, which will remain open for the summer until early September, is heated and offers everything from fun sessions with inflatables for families to quiet swims. It even hosts special midnight sessions for those wanting a dip in the water under the stars. ‌ More information can be found on the Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool website. The Trinkie, Wick The Trinkie is a natural sea water pool located in Wick that is especially popular amongst swimmers and picnickers when the mercury rises. Its name comes from the Scots word for 'trench', with the pool being created from part of a quarry. Nested along Scotland's jaw-dropping northern coastline, the waters of The Trinkie are filled from the North Sea. If you are after a more rugged swim that brings you closer to nature, this might be the spot for you. ‌ Gourock Outdoor Pool, Gourock Now open for the summer season, the Gourock Outdoor Pool is a heated saltwater pool situated in the Inverclyde town of Gourock. Part of Inverclyde Leisure, the pool offers incredible views out over the Clyde Estuary to enjoy as you swim. ‌ The pool, which has been refurbished with modern changing facilities, includes a diving board—while there is also a separate kiddies' pool. Like Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool, Gourock Outdoor Pool also offers 'Starlight Swims' where visitors can enjoy a refreshing night-time dip. More information can be found on the Inverclyde Leisure website. New Cumnock Outdoor Swimming Pool, New Cumnock New Cumnock in Ayrshire is also home to a popular outdoor swimming pool, open seven days a week through the summer season. Situated just a 10-minute walk from the New Cumnock train station, it is Scotland's only public outdoor freshwater heated swimming pool. ‌ New Cumnock Outdoor Swimming Pool offers lane swimming, fitness classes, and private exclusive-use bookings. The pool also features changing rooms and showers. More information can be found on the New Cumnock Swimming Pool Facebook page. St Monans Tidal Pool, Fife ‌ Finally, St Monans Tidal Pool is a historic outdoor pool that has been restored by the local community. The pool sits in the shadow of an old windmill that was once used to pump seawater, and is a great place to watch the sun go down. Unlike some other pools on this roundup, St Monans Tidal Pool is not maintained and so swimmers enter the water at their own risk. However, if you are looking to take a dip on the edge of the sea, it is hard to imagine a more picturesque spot than this. More information can be found on the Welcome To Fife website.
