Soulful Crooner J. Poww Resuscitates R&B with Babyface 'Whip Appeal' Cover Drops New Album 'I Did It My Way'

DETROIT, Feb. 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- February, the month of love, is providing the perfect backdrop for soulful R&B romancer J. Poww's scorching new album release 'I Did It My Way' on Powwer Moves Records. A sizzling collection of 10 soul drenched covers, Poww is resuscitating R&B, infusing his seductive seasoning to an incredible tapestry of legendary songs. With 'I Did It My Way,' the Detroit sensation reignites our most cherished musical memories offering a lyrical library that includes, Babyface's 'Whip Appeal,' Freddie Jackson's 'Rock Me Tonight,' Christopher Cross's 'Sailing,' and Bobby Caldwell's, 'What You Won't Do For Love.'
Poww is no newcomer to the game and more than equipped to tackle such a catalogue. He was the lead singer and songwriter for his group U.N.V. on Madonna's Maverick label. As the label's first signed artists, they seared the '90's scene with top hits, the #1 Billboard chart topper, 'Something's Goin On' and 'Straight from My Heart.'
With 'I Did It My Way' J. Poww pays sweet and reverent homage to a sentimental treasure chest of R&B favorites. Assisting him in this momentous endeavor are Grammy Award-winning producer Christopher Bivins aka Buddafly Wolf heralded for his work with Chris Brown, Tank and Kehlani, with engineering by Grammy Award-winning Jezreel Santos, whose projects include soulful crooners Kem, Gregory Porter and Mali Music. Derek Dollah Jones of Huxl Republic Films directed the 'Whip Appeal' video project. Together the team elevated 'I Did It My Way' beyond basic covers, adding new school production sensibilities.
'So many of us reminiscence fondly about the '90's. The music from back then was the soundtrack to many of our lives. I'm honored that UNV had a prized moment in that history. With 'I Did It My Way,' I wanted to return R&B lovers to the flavor of those days but add a modern vibe to it. With this project, literally every single track was already a hit, many Grammy nominated or Grammy winning. But my intention was to also engage a new generation of listeners and invite them to put some respect on the music that more than likely got them here, lol,' expressed J. Poww.
'Take for instance, Babyface's recent red-carpet mishap on Grammy night. The younger generation often doesn't realize the musical legacies that were laid before them. I am honored that each original artist on my project, including Babyface, gave me their nod of approval on each song I covered!'
'I Did It My Way,' is a luxurious selection of songs and videos, offering the opportunity to make every month a month of love. In addition to Babyface's 'Whip Appeal,' 'Rock Me Tonight,' 'Sailing,' and 'What You Won't Do For Love,' the classic container includes UNV's own 'Somethings Goin On Again,' 'Sunshine,' 'I Been Searching,' 'It Never Rains in Southern California,' 'Just Not The Same Anymore,' 'Millions Didn't Make It,' and 'You Can't Stop the Rain.'
J. Poww's upcoming national and international tour dates include:
March 15 - Soaring Eagle Casino Resort, Mt. Pleasant, MI with Boyz II Men
March 22 - Bizz' Art, Paris, France
March 29 - performing as part of the legendary line up of the H-Town and Special Guests Show at Dorchester Hall in London, when he shares the stage with H-Town along with Lil G Silk, Anthony David, and Samar Newsome.
May 10 – Keith Sweat's 'Make It Last Forever Tour,' Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, NJ

JP Saxe's North American tour cancelled over low ticket sales despite online appeal

TORONTO — A Toronto singer-songwriter who was set to tour North America this fall says he's cancelled his series of concerts over sluggish ticket sales and the high cost of life on the road. JP Saxe took to social media this week, saying that if he didn't sell about 20,000 tickets to his upcoming Make Yourself at Home tour within 48 hours, it would likely be cancelled. In a follow-up video, he says 2,000 more tickets were sold, but it wasn't enough to save the tour. Saxe says he's grateful for the extra sales, that tickets will be fully refunded and he's looking to make sure similar cancellations never happen again. The Grammy-nominated musician, best known for his 2019 single "If the World Was Ending" with Julia Michaels, was set to play more than 25 dates, including Toronto, Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver. The cancellation comes as live music faces mass pressure, compounded by a shaky economy, years of inflation and concert ticket prices that — in many cases — have skyrocketed by hundreds of dollars this year. "Those 2,000 tickets were a reminder ... of how wonderful it can be to ask for help and watch a community come together, and this really was the nicest the internet has ever been to me," he said in a video posted to social media platform TikTok. "I'm grateful to each one of you who bought a ticket, and I'm really sorry." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 2, 2025. The Canadian Press Sign in to access your portfolio

Busta Rhymes to receive major Hollywood honor

Make it clap, because hip-hop star Busta Rhymes is set to be honored in a major way this week. The hip-hop star will receive the 2,818th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 'The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will be adding Busta Rhymes, one of Hip-Hop's most enduring and electrifying voices, as a new member of Hollywood's iconic sidewalk,' explained Ana Martinez, producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 'His talent and influence are undeniable. His star on the Walk of Fame will stand as a testament to his lasting impact on hip-hop music and how important it is to the American culture.' Known for hits like 'Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,' 'Break Ya Neck' and 'Touch It,' the Brooklyn native burst onto the scene in 1996 with his debut album 'The Coming.' Since then, he has sold more than 20 million albums worldwide, earned 12 GRAMMY nominations, and has seven Top 10 debuts on the Billboard 200. He even holds the Guinness World Record for most words in a hit single for his song 'Break Ya Neck.' Busta, whose real name is Trevor George Smith Jr., also has a passion for giving back. He serves as a Global Citizens Ambassador, a St. Jude Children's Hospital Ambassador, and the first-ever MusiCares Hip-Hop Ambassador for their 'Humans of Hip Hop' initiative. The ceremony will take place on Aug. 1 in the 6200 block of Hollywood Boulevard in front of East Town. Chris Rock, LL Cool J and Chuck D are expected to speak at the ceremony.
