Amapiano is a popular music genre originating from South Africa. This locally crafted genre consistently tops charts and dominates airwaves, having also gained international recognition and a global fan base.
It is more than just a genre; it has become a cultural phenomenon and an expression of creativity. Its infectious beats are crafted by passionate, success-hungry upcoming artists and producers. For some, it's a way of life.
From the 'OG's' to the breakout talent, everyone creates music from the soul, with songs that reach stardom. The genre's global appeal can be attributed to its unique blend of piano keys and log drums, which have touched the hearts of many.
However, Amapiano is more than just its catchy beats; it is also about the message it carries. The lyrics often speak to the experiences, struggles, and triumphs of the artists, resonating with listeners worldwide.
Globally recognised artists like Tyler ICU, DJ Maphorisa, and Kabza De Small have played a significant role in propelling the Amapiano sound to greater heights. Tyler ICU's 'Mnike' is a prime example, reaching global heights and even becoming one of Rihanna's favourite songs.
The influence of Amapiano extends to social media platforms like TikTok, where dance challenges to Amapiano songs have become a staple, with people from different countries enjoying and participating in them.
The genre's popularity has led to dedicated events in countries like the UK and Australia, featuring South African DJs playing their hits. This global recognition proves the genre's power to unite people across cultures and borders.
In celebration of this remarkable genre, the Amapiano Africa Awards are set to make history this November. The inaugural event will take place on November 15 at Sun City Resort.

Tom Holland promises more realism in new 'Spider-Man' film
Tom Holland has revealed exciting news about the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day . The actor said the new film will take a very different approach from No Way Home . Instead of relying on soundstages, the new movie will embrace classic filmmaking techniques and shoot on real locations. Holland expressed his enthusiasm for returning to the Spider-Man role, calling it like 'hanging out with an old pal.' He admitted that filming No Way Home was challenging because the entire movie had to be shot on enclosed stages during the pandemic, according to Variety . 'We were really limited with what we could do,' he said. 'This time, we're going to genuinely lean into old school filmmaking and bring Spider-Man back to the streets.' The production team will begin filming the movie in Glasgow, a city known for its striking architecture and vibrant urban scenes. Tom Holland explained that the city's streets will form the backdrop for a major set piece. 'We are going to use the streets of Glasgow for this massive sequence we're putting together,' he said. This approach marks a major shift from the tightly controlled studio environments that dominated filming on the last movie. South African fans, who have grown up loving Spider-Man's urban adventures and stunning visuals, will likely appreciate this return to location shooting. The familiar sight of actors navigating real city streets adds a layer of authenticity and excitement that studio sets often struggle to capture. It also opens opportunities for more dynamic action scenes and practical effects, which can resonate more strongly with viewers. Destin Daniel Cretton, acclaimed for his work on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings , directs the new Spider-Man film. This is a change from Holland's previous three Spider-Man films, which were all directed by Jon Watts. Holland's excitement about this fresh collaboration is clear. 'I'm obviously over the moon,' he said. 'It feels like a new chapter.' Previous Spider-Man films have cost hundreds of millions of dollars, although the exact budget hasn't been announced yet. If converted to South African Rand, that typically reflects budgets exceeding R2 billion. The guarantee of spectacular settings and practical effects should make Spider-Man: Brand New Day well worth the wait. Tom Holland's comments highlight a hopeful trend back to classic filmmaking values, real locations, genuine atmosphere, and heartfelt creativity. This means a more thrilling and authentic Spider-Man adventure is on its way. Tom Holland's warmth in returning to the role adds a personal touch, making this new chapter feel like catching up with an old friend.

Old cuts, new cool
Image: Luke Kuisis In an industry long criticised for its wastefulness, Cape Town-based label Good Good Good continues to chart a refreshingly mindful path, one where fabric offcuts are not discarded but transformed. For Spring/Summer 2026, the brand expands its innovative zero-waste Strip-Stripe Capsule, breathing new life into leftover materials through meticulous craft and vibrant design. At the heart of this sustainable vision is Daniel Sher, the brand's founder and creative director. His journey began in 2016 when he joined his mother-in-law's manufacturing business, Together MFG, where he started producing clothing under his own label. In 2022, Sher relocated his production to a new facility after Together MFG was selected to manufacture Christian Dior's collaboration with Thebe Magugu — a significant milestone for South African fashion. Along with the move, Sher brought with him the machinery and offcuts collected over six years, an archive of remnants that now fuel the latest chapter of the Strip-Stripe story. For their Spring/Summer 2026 collection, Good Good Good unveiled a playful, patchwork-heavy series of T-shirts, hoodies, trousers, shorts and outerwear. Made from 100% South African-sourced cotton jersey, the collection bursts with colour and texture. But it's not just what's made, it's how it's made that sets it apart. Every piece is crafted slowly and intentionally: offcuts are selected by hand, cut into strips, sewn together two at a time, pressed flat, and then added to a growing patchwork. Once large enough, this reconstructed fabric is cut into panels and sewn into the brand's signature silhouettes. This method is not only rooted in sustainability: it celebrates the tactile beauty of imperfection, built on the ethos of repair, reuse and revival. Alongside the capsule collection, the brand also debuts its latest collaboration with Parisian footwear brand Calla. Founded by designer Calla Haynes in 2009, the brand gained acclaim for its refined-yet-relaxed aesthetic. After pausing her ready-to-wear line, Haynes launched 'The Boucharouite Project', partnering with female artisans in Morocco to repurpose textile waste from the luxury fashion industry into handcrafted rugs. For this collaboration, Good Good Good combed through 10 years' worth of fabric remnants, many designed by renowned South African textile artists, and shipped them to Marrakech. There, Haynes' artisan network wove the offcuts into colourful boucharouite-style rugs. These were then cut into panels and crafted into a limited run of eclectic babouche slippers, each pair unique, steeped in story and global connection. As sustainability shifts from a trend to a necessity, Good Good Good offers a compelling blueprint for the future of fashion — one that honours local craftsmanship, reimagines waste as raw material, and dares to find joy in every scrap.
