Israeli protesters urge action for Gaza hostages after Iran truce
TEL AVIV: Thousands of demonstrators rallied in Israel on Saturday to demand that the government secure the release of 49 hostages still held in Gaza, AFP reporters saw. It was the first rally by hostages' relatives since Israel agreed a ceasefire with Iran on June 24 after a 12-day war, raising hopes that the truce would lend momentum to efforts to end the Gaza conflict and bring the hostages home. Emergency restrictions in place during the war with Iran had prevented the normally weekly rally from taking place. A crowd filled 'Hostages Square' in central Tel Aviv, waving Israeli flags and placards bearing the pictures of Israelis seized by Palestinian militants during Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. The deadly attacks prompted Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch a fierce military offensive in Gaza, vowing to crush Hamas and free the hostages. Twenty months and several hostage exchanges later, 49 of those seized are still held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead — raising pressure on Netanyahu's government. 'The war with Iran ended in an agreement. The war in Gaza must end the same way — with a deal that brings everyone home,' said the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, the main body representing the relatives, in a statement to mark the rally. Some demonstrators called on US President Donald Trump to help secure a ceasefire in Gaza that would see the captives freed, hailing his backing for Israel in the conflict with Iran. 'President Trump, end the crisis in Gaza. Nobel is waiting,' read one placard, in reference to a possible peace prize for the US leader. 'I call on Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Trump,' one released hostage, Liri Albag, said at the rally. 'You made brave decisions on Iran. Now make the brave decision to end the war in Gaza and bring them home.'

Saudi Arabia welcomes US-brokered peace agreement between Rwanda and DR Congo
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has welcomed the signing of a peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in a deal facilitated by the United States with support from Qatar, the Saudi Press Agency reported. In a statement issued on Saturday, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Kingdom hoped the accord would meet 'the hopes and aspirations of the two peoples for development and prosperity,' and contribute to 'regional and international security and peace.' The ministry also praised 'the diplomatic efforts and constructive role played by the United States of America and the State of Qatar in this regard.' The agreement, finalized on Friday, aims to de-escalate long-running tensions between Rwanda and the DRC, which have intensified in recent years over accusations of mutual support for armed rebel groups operating along their shared border. The most prominent of these is the M23 militia, which Kinshasa has accused Rwanda of backing — a charge Kigali denies. Efforts to mediate between the two neighbours have gained urgency amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC, where conflict has displaced more than seven million people. The US and Qatar have played key roles in recent months in bringing the two sides to the table for talks, culminating in the formal agreement to ease hostilities and commit to renewed dialogue.

Trump Says He Would 'Absolutely' Consider Bombing Iran Again
Speaking at a press conference at the White House on Friday, US President Donald Trump said he would 'absolutely' consider bombing Iran again, according to BBC. Trump also stated that if intelligence emphasized that Iran could enrich uranium to concerning levels, he would 'without question' attack the country. US Involvement in Conflict On June 22, the US became directly involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran after launching airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan. 'The United States showed that they have no respect to United Nations Charter. They have no respect to international law. They crossed a very big red line by attacking nuclear facilities,' Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said. No Gains In his first public statement since the announcement of the ceasefire, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Thursday that the US intervention in the war was basically driven by its feeling 'that if it did not intervene, the Zionist regime would be utterly destroyed.' However, the US had not achieved any gains from this war, he added. On Friday, Trump also repeated his claim that the country's nuclear sites had been 'obliterated'. After the outbreak of the war on June 13, Khamenei took shelter in a secret location and was not seen in public. Trump said on Friday that he knew 'EXACTLY' where the Ayatollah had been sheltering and that he had personally prevented Israeli and US armed forces from targeting him. Khamenei also declared victory over Israel that targeted Iran's nuclear facilities on June 13, according to The Associated Press. He stated that Iran has 'delivered a hand slap to America's face' by attacking an American air base in Qatar on June 23. In a response, Trump said, 'Why would the so-called 'Supreme Leader' Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of the war-torn country of Iran, say so blatantly and foolishly that he won the war with Israel, when he knows his statement is a lie.' Israel-Iran War On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. Israel also killed several Iranian nuclear scientists in line with its goal to eliminate Iran's nuclear program.
